And lack of communication. Specifically at the ballston station this morning. In terms of what platform they needed to be on to get to the trains and get to their job this morning. Now while metro officials could be seen inside and outside of the stations impacted by stage one of safetrack, metro riders tell us they couldnt get clear information on shuttle buses or which train to get on. Now this comes as the first weekday of the safetrack phase one, which has trains single tracking from ballston to east falls church. Crews replace the tracks at the Ballston Metro station in the middle of rush hour. Riders had to rush from one platform to another to catch the correct train into downtown. Right now we want to turn it over to the podium here. We understand that the metro officials jack evans getting ready to speak. Im here joined with the general manager paul wiedefeld. Im jack evans, chairman of the board of metro. We want to give you an update on really our third day, but the first weekday of our keep in mind, a little background. We are doing this because for really the last 15 years, there hasnt been the maintenance that is necessary to keep this system in top shape. If anything, the lack of maintenance over the last 15 years has left the system in a real difficult situation. It all stems from, as you know, the fundamental flaw, the twotrack system. How do you get to the system to make the repairs and the upgrades that are necessary . So paul came forward with a plan, the safetrack, which the board has enthusiastically endorsed to take 15 different surges around the metro system and make the repairs that are necessary by singletracking, by closing down and doing all the necessary events to get to the tracks. We started this on saturday. As you know, saturday was the first weekend day we did not have Weekend Service after midnight. They h saturday, sunday and now today to really get the system back in shape. Im pleased to report on the good side that things went overall pretty well. We didnt have anybody injured on the system today, which is a good thing. Trains for the most part worked. I think we had one train that broke down. Other than that, it worked. People pretty much listened and really tried to accommodate the situation. Now i want to stress one thing. Today is a monday. Generally on monday, its one of our lowest riding days. And people were like a snowstorm in many ways. The snowstorm was coming or came. People accommodated that. But the day after the storm, the day after the first day, people kind of want to return to normal. If that were to happen or does happen tomorrow, and wednesday, we could have serious overcrowding. So i want to urge everyone. Whatever you did today, do tomorrow. Do wednesday. Do for the duration of this surge because it worked today. If everybody surges back to the subway system tomorrow, we are going to have a problem. So whatever you did, i am stressing, do it again. And we should be able to get through this first surge with the level of convenience that we now have. Again, let me stress. This is an essential component of fixing our system. Our system was broken. And the plan we have in place, as difficult as it, is as inconvenient as it is, is absolutely crucial to get metro back to where we want it to be. At the end of the year, though, do not expect a brand new system. The system will look pretty much as it does right now. It will be a safer system. And we hope a more reliable system. But it wont look a whole lot different. And we have a long way to go to continue to make our system the system we want it to be. Ill turn to paul. He may have comments thank you, jack. I want to thank the riders, obviously, for heeding the warning and really making it work fairly well. We pretty much were at the maximum of what we could move this morning in the peak period. So if anything changes, that will adjust that unfortunately. Also, i wanted to thank the local jurisdictions. Again, i think they did a fantastic job stepping to the plate and providing different personnel and obviously different ways for people to get around. I appreciate that. With that, well be glad to take questions. [inaudible question] sure. Exactly right, tom. That is what we will do. We had issues this morning. Actually the rush hour worked well at ballston. As rush hour passed, people could see the other trains coming in. They werent packed. So they would try to get that was an issue. Well have more people out there to get on top of that. Mr. Wiedefeld, 26 fewer people boarding 5 00 to 10 00 a. M. Is that enough to make the system tolerable during this period . I think it is. I think the total system was only down 1 . So that means people in that area adjusted, which is great. Again, i think we are right at the level in the peak period. If it goes back down, that is not a good thing for the customers. Reporter where did the riders go . When i was there this morning people were starting earlier. So they were spreading out the peak. That was one initiative. The bus ridership was higher. I dont know. I cant tell on telecommuting and things like that. But what im aware of, primarily people changing the travel pattern. The start time. Reporter paul, is it possible [inaudible we have scheduled this basically to get in and do the core of what we need to do in those windows. Of course if there is a hurricane or Something Like that, we have to adjust, you know, a major storm. Otherwise we are going to hit those days. Reporter [inaudible question] i think just in general again, i think its worked fairly well. I want to thank the media. Jonathan that is metros g. M. Paul wiedefeld talking about the first day of safetrack. So far, so smooth. People seem to be getting to work and they are not crammed in as they feared with singletracking going on. Our abc7 instapoll question has to do with it. Was your commute more difficult because of Metro Safetrack in alison grab Metro Safetrack . Alison grab your phone or tablet and let us know. Michelle yes or no . Was your commute more difficult . Alison for the safetrack impact on the roadways, lets check in on traffic watch for us. Hey, jamie. It sounds like it was not so bad. Jamie it wasnt terrible. Well say that. Although we did see a lot of increased volume heading in this morning on 66, trying to get closer to d. C. , which is of course what we thought would happen. Now this afternoon we are going to see a lot of increased traffic as well on 66. Lets head to mobiletrak7 where we have chris papst checking in. Chris . Chris jamie, we are on 66 right now. We are heading west, about a few miles outside of the beltway. And from rosslyn where our station is in arlington, to the ballotway to the beltway, there was very little traffic, smooth traveling. Now we are getting into traffic that you see in front of us and also in the back of us. A little low there. Ill bring it up. You can see the traffic there. This is not bad at all. This is a typical rush hour type of monday afternoon at 4 10. We will see how this progresses throughout the next hour, or hour and a half. Back to you. Jamie you know, of crs you bring up a good point. It is typical in the afternoon that we see the heaviest traffic from this point continuing just past the beltway. So 66 delays, yes, we have them. Where else do we have delays and accidents . Is ill have that coming up shortly. Jonathan thank you. If you talk about metro and the inconvenience of safetrack, its not just the commuters impacted by metro. Its the businesses as well. Alison people arent stopping at the usual pit stops and spending money. Stephen tschida is live in northwest for us with how the board of trade is trying to help some businesses stay afloat during the safetrack. Stephen we are across the street from the dupont circl metro station. Small businesses up and down connecticut avenue and in the neighborhood. Many of them are dependent on foot traffic. Much of that foot traffic coming and going from the metro station. Now, we checked out a bakery around the corner. We talked with the employees there. They say that they lr today. They believe it is because a number of the regular sum customers regular customers who are commuters avoided metro. They met with the Business Owners today to get them prepared for what is coming in the next several months and the next year. Take a listen. Part of our advice is communicate. Ddot is trying to free up room and extending the morning and the everything rush hours by 30 minutes on certain bus priority corridors, so that means emergency parking restrictions are in place half hour longer. Now we want to get the newest developments from cincinnati. Alison we learned no charge the young boy who fell in the gorilla pen. Jonathan remember, that incident resulted in the death of harambe, 400pound male silverback gorilla that keepers had to shoot to protect the child. Michelle the gorilla dragged the child around. Frightening moments on camera. Many of sus seen it over and over by this time. The killing of harambe touched off a national debate. Debra dickson from the sister station in cincinnati is at the zoo. Reporter the video shows what happened right before the decision was made to shoot harambe. Some people put the blame for the gorilla killing directly on the mother. But in order for this to be a child endangering case, the mother would have had to know she was putting her child in a dangerous situation. And not cared. Deters says that is not what happened. Had she been in the bathroom smoking crack and let her kids run around the zoo, that would be a different story. But that is not what happened here. She was being attentive to her children by all witness accounts. By some folks moral equivalence of human life and animal life. This is a beautiful little boy. Had they not acted and this animal behaved sometimes like animals behave, we could have had a genuine tragedy here. Michelle that was Debra Dickson reporting. I would assume a huge sigh of relief for the parents who had this looming over them, whether or not they would face charges, the mother. Alison the reactions are so strong on this story on all sides. You can tell he feels strongly behind his decision. Other people feel equally just so dramatic. Jonathan just because he made up his mind doesnt mean the minds are made up of a lot of people still weighing in on this debate about who to blame. Was the zoo responsible to have an could get into . And if you are in the market for new glasses or contacts you may now get those prescriptions filled just about anywhere you want. Consumer reporter John Matarese shows us a catch with filling your prescription outside of the Doctors Office so you dont waste your money. John remember when you couldnt get your eye doctor to give you contact or eye glass prescriptions . Now days the law requires them to hand it to you if you ask. Have you noticed, the prescription dont last as long as thigh used to. Several viewers ask me why they have to get the glasses renewed every year. The old days they were valid for five years or more. It has to do with the f. T. C. Fairness to consumers act of 2004. Which was expanded to include glasses. That is the rule that now requires doctors to give you, your prescription. You can get your glasses or contacts wherever you want. I took business from optometrists so many states limited the law to limit prescription to one year. But its a good thing. Doctors say you should have your eyes checked annually. But from the doesnt that stink file. Why you cant use the prescription you get, you see your doctor may give you just eyeglass prescription which cant be used to order contacts and vice versa. Each has to be fitted for your eye. If you get the wrong one youll say doesnt that stink . Get the correct prescription for what you plan to buy. If you want the shop around glasses or contacts, dont wait. Get the prescription and look around before it expires so you dont waste your money. Im John Matarese, abc7 news. Jonathan 7 on your side with a consumer alert. Amic to speed up the inflight wifi.
