And a good evening to you on this thursday night. We begin with the breaking news in the case of that American Girl whose trial made headlines around the world. Amanda knox, the American College student. Today, once again, found guilty by an Italian Court of murdering her roommate. She is now living in seattle. And this ruling sets the stage for a diplomatic duel. Will italy try to get her back . Will the u. S. Let her go . Tonight, amanda knox says shes going to put up a big fight. And abcs Neal Karlinsky is in seattle with this bombshell day. Reporter in a case with more twists than a hollywood movie, an Italian Court has once again found amanda knox guilty of the murder of her former roommate meredith kercher. Guilty of a crime that has been at the center of an International Media firestorm for more than six years. Her former boyfriend, raffaele sollecito, was also convicted after nearly 12 hours of deliberations by 2 judges and 6 jurors. Sources tell abc news, knox felt sick as the verdict was read, saying in a statement, i am frightened and saddened by this unjust verdict. Having been found innocent before, i expected better from the italian justice system. This has gotten out of hand. Days before the verdict, knox spoke to guardian films. It was aired by the bbc. Definitely not going back willingly. They have to catch me, and pull me back, kicking and screaming into a prison that i dont deserve to be in. Reporter knoxs parents told us late today, they are stunned but befind. The emotion i pick up on is anger. Anger helps us to fuel the fight. Probably years more of fighting for this. Reporter how could this happen . After being convicted of her roommates murder in 2009 and serving four years in prison, she was cleared after a second trial found the original evidence unreliable. There was no evidence she was at the murder scene. She returned home to seattle, writing a book. And learned that italys highest court overturned the acquittal and ordered a new trial. She told d diane sawyer the new was devastating. I felt like, after crawling through a field of barbed wire and finally reaching what i thought was the end, it just turned out that it was the horizon. And i had another field of barbed wire that i had ahead of me to crawl through. Reporter but it wont end here. Knox can appeal yet yet again to italys supreme court. And if the guilty verdict is upheld, only then will the question of extradition be on the table. Knoxs parents say the ordeal has cost them everything. Devastating them financially. For now, knox remains home in seattle, free. But with the dark cloud of a 28year, 6minute prison sentence hanging over her future. Neal karlinsky, abc news, seattle. Thanks to neal. I want to bring in abcs chief Legal Affairs anchor, dan abrams. Is there any way the United States will let the italians drag her back in prison in italy . In most cases, the answer would be yes. In italy, she is a convicted murderer. In this case, i think its unlikely. I dont think its impossible. But i think its unlikely that the u. S. Government will ultimately force her to go back to italy. Again, when i talked to her, she talked about u. S. Government officials, backing her. And she had gotten some state officials, particularly, standing by her. Is this a political decision . And the consequences of that . It helps her this is a political decision and not a legal one. If you viewed it strictly through the legal prism, you have someone who has been convicted, had due process in an Italian Court, as long as its affirmed. Since its a political decision and ultimately going to go through the state department, i think shes going to have a lot of support in this country, which is going to make it very difficult. And i think theyre going to frame legal arguments to say this is the reason we are not going to send her back. Okay. They can ask. Whether we send her is another issue. Exactly. Thank you, dan. We want you to know that tomorrow morning, amanda knox will be live on good morning america. And we turn, next, tonight, to the final big blast of arctic air loosening its grip on 34 states. And even the National Guard had to help drivers slog home. Abcs Steve Osunsami tells us about the people still digging out. Reporter how dangerous still is the ice in the south . Watch carefully, this video from alabama. The tow truck driver clearing one accident, nearly became another. In atlanta, today, they started moving abandoned cars from the middle of the roads in the melting ice, with their bare hands. Today, the National Guard took families who walked all the way to shelters, back to the cars they abandoned in the snow. Ive not been home since tuesday. Reporter since tuesday. Yes. Yes. Reporter audrey williams, still in her high heels from work. Were going home. And i want to go get my bed and go to sleep. Hello . Reporter georgias governor and other state officials apologized today for not shutting the city down before the snow. Im the governor. The buck stops with me. I accept the responsibility for it. Reporter just such a mess. Nearly 1,500 wrecks. Heard clearly in 911 calls, released today. I got a patch and i spin out. And im afraid to move now because traffic is coming. Reporter weve certainly seen this happened in cities before, when all of houston got on the roads to evacuate right before hurricane rita in 2005, the gridlock was deadly. One expert says the lesson is cities have to have a plan. Atlanta didnt understand that snow is the enemy, unless youre on a ski slope. Whatever was done was in response to a crisis not because it was a plan. The governor could have encouraged schools to close by declaring a state of emergency earlier. The city could have staggered the way residents were sent home. Hindsight, of course, 20 20. Steve osunsami, abc news, atlanta. And a note about california. A new alert about the states driest year on record. There had been hope that a new storm would bring some relief. As of tonight, it looks as if there will not be enough rain to quench the drought. And now, communities are running dry. Less than 100 days from using up all of their water reserves. And next, tonight, we move to an abc news investigation, with those new terror warnings about security during the Winter Olympics. Today, russia arrested two brothers for a link to recent bombings. So, this is the question if sochi is such a hotbed for terrorism, why was it chosen as the public site anyway . Brian ross, in search of those answers. Reporter this years Winter Olympics could have been held in the storied villages of the austrian alps. Or the mountains of south korea, a snowboarders paradise. Instead, the International Olympic committee chose a subtropical city in russia, famed for its black sea summer beaches, where snow rarely falls. And locat a few hundred miles from the stronghold of a ruthless terror group that has declared war on the olympics. So, now, the question is being asked, why was sochi picked in the first place . The choice of sochi is the best choice. Reporter russian president Vladimir Putin pushed hard to win the 2014 games for sochi. But an abc news investigation has found, that behind the scenes, russia was helped in getting the votes by this mysterious businessman, gafur rakhimov, who u. S. Authorities say is a key member in one of the worlds biggest organized crime networks, involving the trafficking of heroin across russia into europe. Hes absolutely a very major and very dangerous gangster. Reporter yet, rakhimov, seen here at a 2012 olympic event, has been thanked by the russian Olympic Committee for his singleminded work in delivering the votes of certain asian countries, without which, it would have been hard for sochi to count on the victory. Rakhimov is a powerful figure in russian media, with friends in the mafia and in the kremlin. Quote, he convinced them because of his good relations with these people. He has great influence, the spokesperson said. And he added, no bribes were necessary. The International OlympicCommittee Says its bidding process is strong and transparent. But neither itr president putins office would respond directly to our questions about how this accused heroin kingpin apparently has such friends and influence with both the olympics and the kremlin, diane. Thank you so much, brian. We have news, tonight, about the surviving suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing. Today, federal prosecutors announced they will seek the dent penalty against dzhokhar tsaranev. And at sea today, a cruise ship with sick passengers. The caribbean princess returning to houston tomorrow, one day ahead of schedule, blaming the return on fog, expected in the port. And on 165 cases of highlyinfectious norovirus. And we have harrowing video, tonight, of a scuba diving boat sinking into the ocean off a popular dive site near thailand. Passengers scrambling for their lives as the boat disappears in the waves. Someone onboard the rescue boat recorded it all. Though, the boat went down in a matter of minutes, everyone was saved. And next, right here tonight, our special report on children and guns in our homes and at the neighbors homes, where our children play. Every other day, a child is accidentally shot to death. So, we at abc news wanted to start a conversation about what we can all do together about making them safe. Earlier, we showed you our little experiment. You tell kids not to touch guns. And you watch what they do when they think no one is watching. We showed stunned parents who told their children never to touch a gun, see what the children do, when they think no one is watching. Dont touch the gun. Reporter when the words say dont touch it. Tell an adult. Dont touch. I know. Reporter their bodies cant seem to resist. They look for bullets by staring right down the barrel of the gun. They reenact the movies, aiming at each other. They can learn the knowledge. They can sit down. We could ask them to repeat it. But you cant educate youre curiosity out of a child. Reporter theres another question. Since one in three homes on average has guns in it in american neighborhoods, a lot of parents thinking theyve hidden them safely away from young children, tucking them away in the closet. One in a hollowedout bible. And keep in mind, the nra recommends that guns be stored so theyre not accessible to children. The question is, what is inaccessible to a child . Youve seen videos like this one on youtube. Give a child an incentive, and they can do impossible things to get where they want to go. And youll see parents like stephanie, who is so sure her 4yearold son doesnt know she has a gun, much more where she placed it. He takes us to the first place where it had been stored. And when she moves the gun, to a truly secret hiding place, we come back one month later. And guess what . Hes found that one, too. Its up there, mom. Reporter josh asked for a flashlight to point out that pumpaction shotgun. Thanks. Up there. Its up there. I cant reach it. Up there. How did you know it was up there . Why you move it . To keep it safe. You dont want anybody to take this gun . I dont want anyone to touch it. Reporter stephanie points out, it is unloaded. But since so many Little American children live in homes with guns, or play at their neighbors with guns, we wondered, how many parents ask the question, whats gun safety in your house . I think the parents will be surprised to see which of their friends actually own guns. Reporter so, we decide to go knocking. What we find is a big surprise. And we hope youll join in this conversation with us. We want to know what you think. See our full report, as well. A special 20 20, young guns tomorrow night at 10 00 eastern. Reporter when james lee clambered out on to the edge of this airplane, even though hed done more than a thousand skydives, he had no way of knowing that his fellow jumpers were about to have mere seconds to save his life. A jumper that left the aircraft afterwards came down a knocked me unconscious. From then, i have no real recollection of what happened on the skydive. About 30 seconds into their dive, something amazing happens. His fellow divers realize lee is in trouble. As you can see from this new footage, they leap into action. My legs were extremely bent.
