Civilians detained. Stopped vehicles. Tanks at the citys main airport, now closed to all commercial traffic. Soldiers blocking Istanbuls Bosphorus bridge, the main artery connecting the european and asian sides of the city, now closed to traffic. And in ankara, turkeys capital, fighter jets flying low. A menacing show of force. Turkish state television taken over, too. A news anchor reading a statement from a group cal itself the Turkish Peace council claiming to have taken over the government and imposing martial law. Turkeys president , his whereabouts unknown, in an interview via facetime on cnn turk, is urging supporters to mass in the streets and vowing the highest penalty for those behindhe attempted coup. And tonight, the u. S. Embassy tweeting a warning to americans. U. S. Citizens in turkey should shelter in place and stay indoors. The stakes are high. Turkey, its long border with syria, may be americas most important ally in the fight against isis. Turkey is home to the crucial incirlik airbase, launching point for the u. S. Air war against isis and a place where some 1,800 u. S. Personnel are now based. Also there, dozens of u. S. Tactical nuclear weapons. And turkey has a huge army, among nato countries. Jon, as i mentioned, a key and major u. S. Ally, the white house clearly monitoring this closely tonight. Reporter absolutely. But i have to tell you, this completely caught the u. S. Government by surprise. U. S. Officials here did not see this coming. The president was notified immediately, and is closely monitoring this. At this restaurant, terrified screams, a waiter bringing a woman to safety. The white freezer truck, rented three days earlier, picked up at 9 34 p. M. Thursday night, by a man alone on a bike. As 30,000 packe mediterranean to celebrate the french holiday. And the truck sideswiping a motorcycle. The panicked crowd fleeing. The chaos spilling into the side streets. The attacker, 31yearold mohamed bouhlel, dead in the passenger seat. In the truck, an automatic pistol, but four other fake guns and a malfunctioning grenade, his drivers license, and a bike. In all, more than 80 dead tonight, including 10 children. And an american father and son, sean and brodie copeland. At dawn, the trail of debris. And this afternoon, the truck hauled away. And alex, were learning more tonight about a person whose bravery kicked in, they tried to reporter thats right. A Government Official for this region told french radio that someone tried to jump on to the truck to stop it. Reporter desperate for leads, French Police took the killers estranged wife into custody today, upsetting her neighbors, who said she had not lived with him for two or three years. Police also searched the apartment of mohamme in this working class neighborhood of nice, looking for any clues about what led to the deadly attack. Molly hunter of abc news is on the scene. Reporter neighbors who knew the family said he didnt seem like a devout muslim. He drank and smoked and beat his wife. Reporter born in tunisia, but a longtime resident of france, the 31yearold mohamed bouhlel, a delivery man, had criminal convictions for theft and assault. But even as french authorities called the attack an act of terrorism, they also acknowledge bouhlel was not known to counterterror officials, not on any terror suspect list. As of tonight, there has been no claims of responsibility from isis or any other terror group. But isis has repeatedly urged its followers to attack westerners in any way possible, including running them over with cars. Officials have to be concerned about this tactic, using a has this level of lethality. Reporter at least 400 people have now died in isisinspired or directed attacks against the west, from paris, and other french cities, to brussels, to istanbul, to san bernardino, to orlando. Carried out without warning and at a tempo that counterterror officials have not been able to stop. This list of attacks is overwhelming.
