Well get a vehicle out there shortly to assess the situation. Reporter in western michigan icy roading causing two semitrucks to lose control. One of them slamming into a police vehicle, responding to another accident. Sleet, freezing rain and snow stretching from the great lakes to new england. In pittsburgh a small plane sliding off an icy runway. In the bronx, firefighters rescuing a young boy that had wandered onto a river. From boston to the frozen new england coastline, they are bracing for another two to four inches of know tomorrow morning. The cleanup just beginning. Couple of storms this brings rain and snow through baltimore and d. C. Tonight. New york the commute in the warning, maybe an inch or two or snow. Heavier amounts in northern new england. The next storm is more potent. And we could see six inches or more across parts of maine. In the southwest, this one is tapping some tropical moisture rain moving into phoenix tonight. Heavy snopes across the colorado rockies. The rain moves out by the super bowl but that storm goes to the plains on sunday. Snow for parts of the midwest. Well watch the east coast on monday. Rob, thank you. We move to the air scares. Two emergency landings that had nothing to do with the weather. In one case the pilot reportedly locked out of the cockpit. They landed without him. The other involved quick work by the cockpit after the plane smelled like it was burning. Here tonight, abcs david kerley. Reporter a short flight. Evacuating a jet liner they said filled with the smell of something burning. They had just taken off from l. A. , headed to washington, d. C. So the jet quickly diverted to the nearby ontario airport. An unplanned landing, and that evacuation. No one was hurt. United says it is trying to figure out what caused the smell on the boeing 757 and worked to get the nearly 200 passengers to the Nations Capital on other aircraft. Just to the east in las vegas, an unusual landing. It was a delta flight from minneapolis, without the captain in the cockpit when it landed. Its a strange one. The cockpit door jammed and the captain couldnt get back in. So, the copilot called ahead and landed the plane without incident. Crews are checking that door tonight. David kerley with us live from washington now. David, you reported there that the cockpit door jammed. How dangerous was it only having one person in the cockpit . Reporter its really not, david. They train for these kinds of incidents. You like redundancy in aviation. You like to have two pilots up there. They are both fully qualified to land by themselves. They have their flight computers, not a problem. Still better to have the pilot in the cockpit than locked out. David, thank you. Now, to boston tonight, and dramatic images from the subway the t, as they call it there. Commuters crawling out of the windows. Eyewitnesses say they could smell burning rubber. Some saying it became difficult to breathe. Authorities say it was not that serious tonight, but passengers describe something different, including a nurse that helped get those passengers out. Abcs gio benitez in boston. Reporter tonight, panic caught on camera on a boston subway train. The red line. Watch as passengers push themselves through windows to escape what some of them called billowing smoke on the train. It was all dark inside and then somebody shouted, people started screaming and stuff, they are yelling to open the doors. Reporter kristen bello, a nurse, helped get passengers out. You could taste the smoke . Yeah you could taste it. Smell it, taste it. Reporter a worker here telling us there was so much smoke, it lingered for hours. Still, bostons Transportation Authority says it was a mechanical failure. Insisting, there was no smoke inside the subway car. There was a small amount of smoke on the platform generated by wheels spinning on one subway car. Its stressful. Its people get panicked. Reporter this on the heels of the d. C. Metro incident where smoke filled a car, sending more than 80 to the hospital and killing one. Tonight, here in boston, the trains are back up and running. The good news tonight, no injuries reported. David . All right, gio thank you. Now, to the growing concern over measles tonight. More than 80 cases now in 14 states. This evening, authorities actually monitoring about 1,000 people in arizona alone, home to the super bowl this weekend. Concerned that they might have come in contact with the disease. Dr. Richard besser standing by answering your questions tonight. Shouldnt the vaccine work . But first, abcs brandi hitt on the parents who skipped vaccinations and what some are learning now. Reporter in arizona tonight, just as super bowl fans arrive state officials are monitoring 1,000 people and nearly 200 children for possible measles exposure. And in california 66 students at Palm Desert High School who cannot prove they were vaccinated are not allowed to return to school for two more weeks. After a fellow student showed possible symptoms of the measles. They are going to be asked to stay home until the incubation period for contagion is complete. Reporter its the latest scare, with the cdc reporting 84 cases of measles across 14 states this year. The cdc believe the cases came from someone infected overseas. The newest infection surfacing at the university of minnesota from a student who traveled internationally. The outbreak also reignited a heated debate over those opting out of the vaccine. Theres some doses we gave today. Reporter doctors are saying they see some parents change their minds. Parents are afraid. They are nervous about what might happen to their child. Reporter last school year more than 17,000 california kindergartners were exempt from vaccine vaccines. That worries lets parents. Lets imewe nice or children. Reporter the 6yearold cant get the measles vaccine white battling leukemia. Here in california doctors we talked to say theyve seen an increase in parents requesting the measles vaccine. We turn overseas this evening, and to a disturbing g headline out of afghanistan. A man stressed up as an afghan officer, taking him. Three americans among the dead. Theres security on the perimeter to even get close to it and heavy screening to get on the airplanes. But the shooter was apparently himself one of those Afghan Security officers or dressed like one. And without question those three contractors would be easily identifiable as americans or westerners. Over the last five or six years, there have been more than 100 attacks by Afghan Forces on u. S. And Coalition Troops but the number has gone down dramatically in the last few years. But this shows, david, that despite the afghanistan remains a very dangerous place. All right, martha thank you. And to another developing headline at this hour the deadline passing on that prisoner in swap to save two hostages held by isis. Isis had been offering a deal to jordan asking for this woman, a would be suicide bomber that vest of explosives, to be freed in exchange, they would spare the life of a jordanian pilot and free that japanese journalist. Jordan agreeing to the prisoner swap but first demanding proof their pilot is still alive. There is no word on their fate tonight, even though the deadline has now passed. And from mexico this evening, a deadly blast caught on camera, leveling a childrens hospital. Just incredible images. The hospital destroyed by an exploding gas truck. At least two people killed. The victims, a woman and a child. Rescuers digging through debris. The driver surviving the blast, detained by police while they investigate how this all happened. Back here at home tonight, two cities seattle and boston new england, getting ready for the super bowl. One patriots player a former player who likely would have been there, instead in court today. Nfl star Aaron Hernandez was a tight end for the patriots. Then the arrest on murder charges. Tonight, this image of him in court. Pros kuehl tomorrows have said they have security video from dozens of cameras in his home which they say show him with a gun. Abcs Lindsey Davis with the dramatic day in court. Reporter while his former teammates prepare to play in the super bowl, Aaron Hernandez the former star pa end sat suited up for court. Aaron hernandez did not murder his friend odin lloyd. Reporter hernandez, who sat at times chewing gum, was described by the prosecution as a killer, who in june of 2013 was the mastermind behind the murder of odin lloyd, who was dating the sister of hernandezs fiance. The evidence will show that on june 15th the defendant was unhappy with the victim. Reporter the body was found in a field less than half a mile away from hernandezs home. When jurors saw a picture of his body, lloyds mother, so overcome with grief, she had to leave the courtroom. The prosecutions lists more than 300 potential witnesses, including patriots owner robert kraft and head coach bill belichick. As for the defense, they say not only is there no murder weapon, there is no motive. We are here because police and the prosecutors targeted aaron from the very beginning.
