It collapsed freeways. Part of the bay bridge. As we open our abc news vault to october 17th, 1989. A section of the bay bridge connecting oakland and San Francisco collapses. There are massive casualties as an oakland highway collapses. And in San Francisco tonight, electricity is out. There are gas leaks. Dozens of fires and a still mounting toll of deaths and injuries. We are going to go as we have been going throughout much of the night to our San Francisco affiliate kgo to find out whats going on right now. Were finding that most of the deaths are connected are happening in very specific, small areas of marge concern. This is a section of the freeway in the east bay nearoakland. This section of freeway perhaps a full mile collapsed like a pancake. Estimates that perhaps 250 people have been killed underneath and 400 injured. Now we are just going to show you by way of summation a few scenes from today, the earthquake and what led up to the earthquake. And those bridges out there, they will scare the devil out of you because those are such life lines. You have to have them in the bay area to get anywhere around. Theyre necessary out there. Joining us to help shed some light an this, dan childs. Good to have you here. Lets start with nina pham, first of all. We got word that shes doing okay, was in good condition. We saw her actually walking when she was getting off the plane, going into a hospital unit. What does that tell us about her condition, the fact we can see her walking . Its all very good news. Basically, youre seeing someone who is perhaps in the early phases but really hasnt started to experience the brunt of the symptoms yet. One thing we know about this disease is the earlier the bad symptoms come, usually the worse it is for someone. How do we know that our hospitals, even transportation here, new york Governor Cuomo is doing these drills of ebola in the trains here. How do we know that our Transportation Systems are safe, our hospitals are prepared to deal with ebola . Were in the very early phases of this. The good news, one thing the cdc has done well is contact tracing. Theyve been able to keep track of everyone who has been exposed to that one index patient that we saw. That was duncan early an. Theyve been able to keep very good records as to who came into what kind of contact with him. As long as that surveillance keeps up, we probably never to have worry about our trains. We never have to are about the school buses, the schools themselves. But this is a very crucial step. This is the first line, and we need to hold it. I think were all about, lets just err on the side of caution. Lets scrub that plane don a second, a third, a fourth time. You may hear that and think lets just be sure. But at the same time, can that have the adverse effect of people hearing that. They scrubbed it down four times. Maybe they think there was a reason. There was a chance of ebola surviving in that. Is this some just alarmist stuff going on . Some people even selfquarantining themselves who had contact with the second nurse. You can see that panic and fear. It can be a very damage thing. An the outside it may seem like youre taking a few more precautions, but what youre talking about, thats time they arent at work. If you shut down a school, thats time kids arent getting educated. At some point you have to draw the line and say this is what we can realistically be afraid of and this is what really is sort of wrapped up in the fear of this. Sometimes its very hard. Especially if you are seeing it all the time, hearing it all the time, its easy to fall into that vortex. It comes down to the science. There are things we know we should be worried about and certain things we shouldnt. How can you be sure these hospitals or apartments or planes that are being contaminated that everything is removed off the surface. That has to do with the people in charge of the actual cleaning and nature of the exposure. Did you have someone that had active symptoms. Were they just in the begoning phases or in a point where they were, for example, vomiting and they would actually be in the situation where they can transmit this bug. Those are the things that really you need to take into effect to see if theres a real risk here or not. And then that guides what you need to do in order to decontaminate the area from there. Everyone on such high alert. Abcs dan childs, our managing editor of the medical unit. Thank you for joining us. Thank you. Reporter the director of the cdc and other Top Health Officials were in the hot seat. People are scared. We need all hands on deck. We need a strategy, and we need to protect the american people. From west african nations that have an Ebola Outbreak. Or temporarily suspending travel visas of individuals from there until the virus is under control. But the head of the cdc said the u. S.
