encouraging news to the obama campaign. the president now leads likely gop nominee mitt romney by seven points. last month our poll put them in a dead heat. our poll also shows far more women voters support the president than romney by nearly a 20-point margin. more men steam back romney who ranks at the top among the republicans running for president. >> the gender gap becoming a real important issue as this election finally shapes up down to two men. the economy is all but certain to be the issue that shapd the general election campaign for sure and there's some pessimism about it among investors. >> the major asian markets followed wall street's move overnight to the down side. karen travers explains why. >> reporter: good morning, rob. good morning, meg. it was a delayed reaction, but it wasn't a good one on wall street to that jobs report from last friday. it was a rough start to the week on wall street. stocks opened in the red and stayed down all day as investors raebl reacted to last friday's weaker than expected jobs numbers. the government reported that only 120,000 jobs were added in march. just half of what we saw in previous months. the market was closed last week for good friday. >> that number on friday definitely got people to stop and say, huh. maybe we've already seen the best of the recovery. that's the big concern out there. >> reporter: last week's jobs report showed the unemployment rate ticked down from 8.3% to 8.2%. they attributed that to fewer americans looking for work. >> it's clear to every american that there will still be ups and downs along the way. and that we got a lot more work to do. >> reporter: even before the weak jobs report on friday, the dow had dropped four straight days. investors are concerned that the federal reserve isn't likely to take steps to spur economic growth. and skittish about the ongoing european debt crisis. look at the trend. the u.s. economy has added 858,000 jobs since december. that's the best four months of hiring in two years. the number of americans filing for unemployment is the lowest since april of 2008, the depth of the recession. >> we've had a huge rally. the market has been up 30% in the last six months. so i wouldn't get too concerned about a day or two of big declines because when you put it into context, we're still up a long way from where we were back in october. >> reporter: investors are eagerly awaiting first quarter corporate earnings reports this week for more signs of where the economy is heading. rob and meg, back to you. also driving the markets, the fear of iran's nuclear program. >> that's a big deal. >> talks begin on saturday. if they don't get any progress, that could affect the prices. >> as you heard, the bigger picture is one that should cause a bit of optimism. the market had its strongest first quarter in god knows how many years and the average 401(k) went up $10,000 because of that strong start. >> put it in perspective. >> overall, we're getting better. fingers crossed. speaking of gas, drivers should be getting a bit of a break at the gas pump. the average price of a gallon of gas is now $3.94 a gallon nationwide. that's actually down -- down a penny from a week ago, but up 15 cents from this same time last year. analysts predict gas prices will go up again but not anywhere as high as they were four years ago when they hit those record highs. there are a lot of busted windshields and windows this morning in the area around oklahoma city. hail the size of grapefruits dropped from the sky last evening. and that same powerful weather system spawned at least two tornados in woodward county. no damage was reported from those twisters. here's a look at your tuesday forecast, everybody. oklahoma could get hammered again today by some severe storms. also the gulf coast could see dangerous weather as well. raining in san francisco most of the day. and there could somebody wet weather far south as san diego. >> here you go kid. hey.aren't you. yep. vokoun and halpern. i think you need a box check. a box check? yeah, it's simple. always check the rating symbols on the front. read the content descriptors on the back. you know, a box check. yes! that's good solid checking. hey, thanks s guys. son, i, i don't think this game's for us. maybe you should get this one. this kid got some skills. for more information, visit esrb dot org. this morning on "world news now" -- suspects' confessions. the two gunmen wanted in racially charged fatal shootings in tulsa now admit they opened fire at african-american victims. >> and detectives are finding more signs that the shootings may have been an act of revenge. it's tuesday, april 10th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." >> good tuesday morning, everybody. i'm rob nelson. welcome back. here we go again. >> it's great to see you back again. >> caffeinated and ready to roll. >> i'm ready to roll. i'm in for paula faris. three people were shot and killed in last week's rampage in tulsa's african-american neighborhoods. one of the suspects may have been angry about his father's shooting death by a black suspect two years ago. >> apparently that young man had also witnessed his girlfriend's suicide. he was beginning to unravel and all of that emotional turmoil could have led to the shootings. that case still ongoing. also concerns about a hometown star upstaging the legal process in the city of chicago. three of jennifer hudson's family members, of course, were murdered and the suspect is about to go on trial. jury selection expected to wrap up later today. and later this half hour, he is not your typical masters champion and not your typical golf pro. find out what makes bubba watson tick. >> i love that a guy named bubba won the masters. >> just got to watch that last shot. >> incredible. unconventional guy winning the most storied golf tournament. he's a great back story. love this guy's story. we'll get to that, too. first, the two suspects in the racially charged shootings have now both confessed. police say jake england confessed to shooting three people and alvin watts confessed to shooting two others. >> revenge may be the motive. abc's paul beeben has more. >> reporter: friends of one e o the suspects are saying he was distraught over the death of his father and that he may have been out for revenge. prosecutors in tulsa say they are looking into the question being asked everywhere. will jake england and alvin watts face hate crime charges for gunning down five people, all of them african-american. >> certainly, we will look at all the facts and evidence and make the kind of decision that the facts bear out. it's preliminary to determine what the motivation was behind this. >> reporter: there were no cameras inside the courtroom where england and watts appeared via closed circuit video from jail. and while law enforcement remains reluctant to characterize the shootings as a hate crime, others officials aren't holding back. >> i think that somebody that committed these crimes were very upset with black people. >> reporter: jake england's father carl was shot and killed in april 2010. this man, pernell jefferson is serving a prison sentence in the shooting. just hours before tulsa's nightmare began early friday, england wrote on his facebook page, today is two years that my dad has been gone. shot by an [ expletive ] "n" word. abc news has learned a series of critical tips helped crack the case. late saturday afternoon a caller to the local crimestoppers said they might know who was behind the shootings. identifying england and that he had a white truck. additional tips led to england the house and a nearby trailer where he and watts were arrested early sunday morning. tulsa police believe they found the murder weapon. now watts and england are due back in court on monday. meanwhile, they are being held on $9 million bail apiece. rob and meg? >> sometimes there's criticism these cases play out in the media. when they had the press conference saturday afternoon, within minutes that's when that tip came in. these tipsters really helped break the case. >> yeah, absolutely. and as you saw that trailer there where they were arrested. they apparently, the suspects had moved in together. they were trying to help him with his rage. it was really, as you mentioned, kind of unraveling for him. >> severe anger management issues. hopefully that community can sleep a little easier. they've not only been caught but confessed. moving on, for the first time, we are hearing from the suburban orlando man who shot trayvon martin. in a statement on a new website, george zimmerman says i've been forced to leave my home, my school, my employer, my family and ultimately my entire life. the site also solicits donations for his legal fight. this comes as the special prosecutor decides against having a grand jury hear testimony in the case. sources close to the investigation say charges could be filed against zimmerman within days. a mother discovered a horrible scene at a home-based day care center in suburban minneapolis. the woman had already dropped her child off when she noticed a man acting pretty suspiciously. she called the day care back and was talking to someone and that's when the line went dead. she returned and then found three people there had been shot to death. her toddler was in that house but was luckily unharmed. police are now searching for a suspect. jury selection should wrap up today in the trial of the man accused of killing three members of singer jennifer hudson's family. >> four more jurors need to be found, though. given hudson's stardom, that is not going to be easy. abc's diana alvear has the latest. good morning. >> reporter: rob and meg, good morning. jennifer hudson was already quite famous at the time of the murders. and her star has risen even more over the last couple of years. and that has defense attorneys quite concerned for their client. "american idol" finalist, oscar winner, weight watchers spokeswoman, jennifer hudson's presence is inescapable. and that's the problem when it comes to selecting the jury in the trial of a man charged with murdering her family. >> she is a very, very likable person. she is somebody who we look upon as a hometown person. we want to help this person who has made it big. >> reporter: the tragedy unfolded in october of 2008. the bodies of hudson's mother and brother were found shot to death in their chicago home. days later, the body of 7-year-old julian king, hudson's neveu was found in a vehicle. william balfour the singer's brother-in-law was charged with their murders. prosecutors allege he was angry hudson's sister was seeing someone else. his attorneys are concerned he may not get a fair trial because of the singer's fame. potential jurors have killed out a survey that include questions such as, have you ever seen "american idol" and have you ever watched the movie "dreamgirls"? >> it's no different than the questionnaire used in the r. kelly case or michael jackson case. these are standard in high-profile cases. >> reporter: and the challenge for attorneys continues even after a jury is seated. >> all attention usually is on that celebrity sitting in the courtroom. and that's the biggest challenge is to try to shift the focus to the action on the witness stand. >> reporter: hudson's name is on the prosecution's witness list. at this point, there's no indication she plans to testify. rob, meg? >> diana alvear, thank you. we turn to the aftermath of the fiery jet crash in virginia beach. they are handing checks to those forced out of their homes by friday's accident. recordings of some of the 911 calls made after the crash were just released. >> virginia beach 911. what is the emergency? >> we just had a jet explode on birdneck. >> a what? >> they ejected from the plane. >> do you know if anybody's injured? >> what? >> do you know if anybody's injured? >> i have no idea. the place is on fire. i don't know. get everybody out there. >> the navy is using heavy duty equipment to clear debris while the investigation continues. the two pilots who ejected before the crash are now back home with their families. if you ever thought there was no such thing as a bad day at the beach, you might want to think again. we reported last year from the caribbean island of st. maurten where the airport runway is right next to the beach. watch the woman in the red top riding the jet blast of a jetblue airliner. she cannot hang on and off she goes head first into the curb. that had to hurt. we don't know the exact extent of her injuries. can you imagine that moment of impact for her? [ female announcer ] up to 100% flake-free, flirty hair. new head & shoulders green apple. ♪ feeling hot, hot, hot yes, indeed. it has been confirmed. the nation's top scientist crunched the heat index numbers and this past march was the hottest ever on record. >> i buy it. more than 15,000 records were broken. abc's weather editor sam champion explains on extreme weather and its extreme consequences. >> reporter: some are calling it the year without winter. and now it's one for the record books. the average temperature in march is usually 42.5 degrees. but this year, 51 degrees. about 8.6 degrees higher than normal. >> under normal circumstances, we would expect this large of a temperature departure from normal about once every 280 years. >> reporter: the up side of the heat wave, scenes like this. people enjoying the sun. skiing in bathing suits. but the potential downside, so much darker. and some say we're already seeing it. local governments are racing to meet these challenges head-on. los angeles hosting a meeting of top scientists and public health officials to plan for what they are calling extreme climate risks. danger number one -- extreme weather. the rising temperatures may create ideal conditions for more severe thunderstorms and tornadoes. 223 twisters reported in march alone. a month which typically sees 80. danger number two -- economic crisis. this unprecedented heat also raising alarms for farmers. >> to say that they're concerned would be an understatement. >> reporter: it's feared these extreme temperature fluctuations can endanger a whole year's crops. danger number three -- a possible public health crisis. a harvard study revealed even small increases in summer temperatures as small as two degrees had a direct link to shorter life expectancy for seniors with chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, heart failure or lung disease. reseveners predicted a tiny heat spike could result in 10,000 additional deaths a year. the national weather service has a 90-day outlook. it tells you what to expect for the next 90 days which takes you well into the summer months. they say for at least a half of the country. the southern areas and the eastern areas you should expect warmer than normal temperatures throughout the summer months. sam champion, abc news, new york. >> it's a great thing. more days in the summer. there's a down side to this for sure. the trn outbreak in early march killed at least 40 people and caused more than $1.5 billion in damage. >> that's crazy. there is a down side to all of this sunny weather we've had. on top of that it's weird. this is what they're worried about. now false warnings in the midwest. it's dipped below normal there. farmers and their crops. all this warm weather and then it gets cold again. that's what they're worried about. hurts the crops. let's go to our favorite story of the morning. it's going to be coming up. bubba watson. >> we love this story. coming up next, a success story that bubba watson is now. >> from humble roots to a worldwide champ. no ordinary golf pro. never in my lifetime did i think i could walk 60 miles in 3 days. if my mom can fight and beat breast cancer, i can walk 60 miles. in the trayvon martin shooting case near orlando. we're hearing from the gunman, george zimmerman, for the first time. >> and the special prosecutor who is investigating says this case will not go to a grand jury. it is tuesday, april 10th. >> announcer: from abc news, this is "world news now." >> good morning. i'm meg oliver. paula faris is on assignment. >> welcome back. here we go again. i'm rob nelson. good morning. the gunman in this case, george zimmerman, has not been seen, but his comments on his website give us a glimpse into his troubled life since the shooting. we'll bring you the latest from sanford, florida, on a case that still has the world talking. >> and this next story is going to have everyone talking. heroic middle school students caught on camera helping their bus driver. he had a heart attack while behind the wheel. you'll be amazed to see how these students knew exactly what to do in such a time of danger. >> you never know when those health classes in school may pay off. certainly did in that case. scary situation. those kids handled it heroically, to say the least. also, in this half hour, what is sending a "dancing with the stars" contestant to the hospital after last night's performance. we'll bring you the latest scoop coming up in "the skinny." nothing too major, but we want to keep you up to date on every possible thing about "dancing with the stars." >> all right. but first, a grand jury was supposed to meet today in the trayvon martin shooting case. that's not going to happen. the prosecutor says she will decide what, if any, charges to bring against the gunman. >> on top of that, we're now hearing from that gunman george zimmerman for the very first time. matt gutman has the latest from suburban orlando. >> reporter: george zimmerman's first public words since the trayvon martin shooting six weeks ago. in a statement on a new website saying, i've been forced to leave my home, my school, my employer, my family and ultimately my entire life. this site also solicits donations for his legal fund. that as the special prosecutor angela corey investigating the shooting decides against using a grand jury to win an indictment. >> the prosecutor should have faith in her case and believe that she can prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt before moving forward. >> reporter: but the decision to forgo a grand jury takes first-degree murder off the table. prosecutors insist that was never a viable option. and sources close to the investigation say charges could be filed against zimmerman within days. martin's family released this statement saying, we're not surprised by this announcement and we are hopeful that a decision will be reached very soon to arrest george zimmerman. corey took over the case three weeks after the shooting. her team has had to re-investigate all the evidence from scratch after a series of alleged police missteps. zimmerman says he acted in self-defense, firing that single shot captured in these 911 calls. >> reporter: meantime, sanford remains a city on the edge. protesters demanding zimmerman's arrest blockaded the sanford police station forcing it to close for several hours. we spoke with zimmerman's attorney who says he's also not surprised corey decided to sidestep the grand jury. she's got a reputation of being a tough and fair prosecutor. he's hopeful she'll see all the evidence in the case and decide not to prosecute. and that still is a possibility. matt gutman, abc news, sanford, florida. >> this prosecutor does have a tough rep. what this does is gives her a situation where she doesn't have to depend potentially on the unpredictability of a grand jury. now this case is solely in her hands. what happens next is on her shoulders. >> huge debate going on. a lot of people weighing in. bill cosby told the "washington times" that volunteers like george zimmerman should not be allowed to carry guns. he went on to say, when you carry a gun you mean to harm somebody, kill somebody. and, of course, these remarks immediately circulated around the web. a lot of people upset he's pinpointing the gun as a problem and not exactly what happened. >> the perennial american debate about gun control. another family member of george zimmerman has written a letter to attorney general eric holder saying, look, why haven't you charged some members of the new black panther party since they put a bounty out on zimmerman's head. we'll see in the attorney general responds to that. this case continues to deepen and twist and turn. switching gears now. police in tulsa say the two suspects in a shooting rampage that terrorized that city's black community have now both confessed. 19-year-old jake england confessed to shooting three people and 32-year-old alvin watts confessed to shooting two others. england may have been motivated by revenge for his father's fatal shooting by a black man. that shooting took place about two years ago. a full jury is expected to be seated at the murder trial of the man accused of killing three members of jennifer hudson's family. william balfour is accused of murdering hudson's mother, brother and nephew in october 2008. if convicted he faces life in prison. 14 people were selected yesterday to be among the 12 jurors along with 6 alternates. in other news, there's some high praise for some middle schoolers in washington state who sprang into action when their bus driver passed out while behind the wheel. he was driving at the time. cameras recorded all of this. komo's keith eldridge reports from suburban seattle. >> reporter: instead of reacting in panic, middle school students jumped into action after their driver stopped breathing going down the road. >> oh, my gosh! >> reporter: that's jeremy leaping for the steering wheel. the bus is now slowly rolling to a stop and the attention turns to the bus driver. >> somebody call 911. >> 911. >> reporter: classmate johnny wood came to help while the others got on the phone to 911. >> my bus driver he just like passed out and we're like right in front of the school. >> reporter: jeremy told me that he just acted without really thinking. >> i was just acting on instinct. it was all happening really quickly. >> reporter: he credits the book "absolute power" with showing him what to do. >> i was reading a book about these superheroes and this guy was in a bus and talking on his walkie-talkie. and the guy was telling him to turn the ignition off. >> reporter: johnny told me he'd recently taken a cpr class on what to do. >> i was doing chest compressions on his chest. >> reporter: school administrator john mccrossen just happened to be driving by and saw that there was trouble. he took over the cpr until police and paramedics arrived. he used to be the kids' principal and really credits them. >> 11 and 12-year-olds are interesting creatures. sometimes in times of, i guess, need, they come through. amazing kids. >> reporter: the kids know that some will call them heroes, but their thoughts are with the driver. just glad this wasn't a whole lot worse. >> the only thing i was looking at was the road and cars that were coming. i didn't want to crash into them. >> reporter: that's where the bus came to a stop on this very busy road. as you can see, it almost made its final destination here at the schoolhouse before the kids had to jump into action. in milton, new seattle, keith eldridge for abc news. >> wow. quick-thinking kids. >> quick thinking. he raced up there so fast. >> unbelievable. in case you're wondering the state of the driver, his name has not been released. we understand he is in grave condition. doesn't look like he's doing too well. the accident could have been a lot worse if those kids had not sprang into action. a funny story, he knows how to drive a little bit because his mom lets him back the car out of the garage every once in a while. good thing for mom. he had a little behind the wheel experience. that's for sure. moving on. now to some medical headlines just out this morning that links dental x-rays to brain cancer. researchers at yale discovered patients are more likely to develop a common type of brain cancer if they've had bite wing dental x-rays at least once a year. the brain cancer risk was five times greater in those who have had full mouth dental x-rays prior to age 10. while the findings in today's cancer journal seem alarming, the researchers say much more study needs to be done. there's new fallout from the spending scandal at the general services administration. an eighth employee has been placed on administrative leave as the agency's investigation of lavish spending at a 2010 conference in las vegas continues. that employee is the deputy commissioner named david foley. he's the guy who gave an award to a colleague for producing a rap video about the gsa's free-spending ways. >> sure they regret that little video now. we turn to texas where the victims of last week's horrific tornadoes are now being targeted a second time, and police are cracking down. looters are preying on neighborhoods where people's homes are too damaged to live in anymore. they are stealing what's left behind and been exposed from stripping copper from air conditioning units. police have made more than a dozen arrests. predators striking. hard to believe people would do the way it goes.mes, but that's also, firefighters in new jersey are working through the night to contain a brush fire that could force people to evacuate their homes. about 1,000 acres in the pine barrens forest are on fire now. the flames are fueled by dry conditions out there, plus winds gusting above 40 miles an hour. the people in its path are trying to protect their homes but they've also packed their cars in case they have to get out of dodge. that fire is considered, though, at this point, to be suspicious. >> that's not something you see every april. >> maybe in scenes out west, but not in that neck of the woods. hopefully that will be okay as the night wears on. here's a look at your weather on this tuesday morning. the fire danger continues from new york to north carolina, in fact. atlanta, meanwhile, could see a few showers. maybe even a thunderstorm by the afternoon. it also will be pretty stormy up in seattle. >> it's going to be a chilly morning in the midwest with frost and freeze warnings posted. the dakotas will drop into the 20s. boston, new york and baltimore in the 60s with those gusty winds kicking up in the afternoon. when it comes to betting around this time of year, march madness, masters, maybe even horse race aeg triple crown. >> in west danville, vermont, the locals bet on when some cinderblocks will fall through the
