>> reporter: the tornados tore through the state riding in over the river. a disaster movie special effect sprung to life. striking with virtually no warning. >> it was probably, i think, from start bathtub. >> it is touching and really shows a mother's love for her child trying to protect it. and i think it really shows humanity at its best. >> reporter: all day the national guard went door to abc news, west springfield, massachusetts. >> the 2 year-long investigation of john edwards appears headed towards a conclusion within hours. prosecutors prepared to file charges in north carolina. and edwards' attorneys are now still in discussion for a plea deal. prosecutors insist that edwards spent presidential campaign money to keep his mistress in hiding. it is unclear whether edwards will be indicted for agree to a negotiated charge. mitt romney hosts a town hall meeting in new hampshire one day after becoming a presidential candidate. he may get ammunition for his campaign rhetoric when new jobless numbers come out later today. here is john berman. >> reporter: it is unclear what was in the chile mitt romney served out, but his campaign's recipe has just two ingredients. >> for challenge with the independents who make up the tea party movement. >> reporter: what do you make of her visit here, do you think she is trying to step on your toes? >> no, she is a person of great fur is flying over the latest collection by fendi, the italian fashion house launched its line in south korea, after a hairy controversy marked by a government flip-flop. our report from seoul. >> reporter: a new look from fendi this fall and winter, colorful, young and sporty. at its largest show in asia, the italian fashion house presents what it calls an art teacher look. >> she's a little bit severe, but then maybe, also in the evening, she is high collars, long sleeves, and then in the back there is a big slit. >> reporter: celebrities all over asia highlighted the event including a world renowned chinese actress. four years since fendi's show on the great wall of china they chose seoul because of its cultural influence. a big marketing event for the city of seoul working on its image as asia center of design. but after protests from animal rights groups, the local government had threatened to cancel the show if fur products appear on show. then the government reversed it, switching sides from the animal rights group to fendi, the show was on. that sparked angry appropriate testers to gather at the venue, chanting, performing, staging and children taking part. >> it is [ male announcer ] gillette fusion proglide. here are some stories to watch today on abc news -- former bosnian serb military commander ratko mladic appears in the united nations war crimes tribunal today accused of genocide and crimes against humanity. unemployment numbers for may are released later this morning. analysts first predicted employers made 180,000 hires last month. that some admit the estimate is overly optimistic. president obama heads to toledo, ohio today and will tell chrysler workers that the government no longer owns a share of their company. good news there. >> all right, finally, maybe the dorkiest event held on -- who am i, i have a pretty big dork side. >> we all do. everyone has an inner dork. >> it's okay. all right. >> on espn, annual scripps national spelling bee finals in washington, d.c. >> i like spelling bee. not a contact sport. it its pure entertainment. don't forget, $40,000 on the line as well. karen travers shows us the big moment. >> h-o-u-s. >> reporter: with that word she sukanya roy became the winner of the 84th edition of the scripps national spelling bee. the 14-year-old from pennsylvania beat out 274 other spellers. this was sukanya roy's third appearance in the national bee. immediately after her win she was speechless. >> it's hard to find the words. >> reporter: 13 spellers advanced to high pressure final round. they were quizzed with words that most americans have probably never heard of. rapprochement. >> hexafuse. >> reporter: the spellers tried any way they could to coax some clues from the judges to help them get their word right. >> is there any other information you can give me other than -- >> spelling? >> reporter: there were moments of stress. >> e-r-i-n-o. >> reporter: as well as relief from the contestants and their families. 14-year-old lily jordan of maine was competing in her second national spelling bee. her brothers were on stage to cheer her on and seemed more nervous than she did. >> f-a -- >> later the look on their faces gave it away. they knew the elimination bell was coming soon as lily missed the first letter of a word. >> roy receives more than $40 tin cash and prizes including that impressive trophy. karen travers, abc news, washington. >> congratulations. wonderful enthusiastic kids. they have to work on their fist bumps though. >> go like that. that thing. >> sort of did not work. sort of got uncomfortable. sort of like the "american idol"
