Just too darn much snow. This morning, 26 states are cleaning up, after a massive winter storm that broke records in some areas. The weather is being blamed for at least 16 deaths, stretching from minnesota to new york state. Hardest hit was boxford, massachusetts, north of boston, which was walloped with about two feet of snow. We hit the jackpot. It was a good storm. Reporter in quincy, massachusetts, south of boston, we found steven clearing the path to his front door. Heavy snow . Light snow . Its light snow. Its pretty good. Reporter you dont mind . First, the snow and punishing wind, blanketing a huge swath of the northeast. Look at this satellite image of the storm at its peak. And now, bonechilling, teethchattering, frostbiting sub zero temperatures. Chicagoland is preparing for a deep freeze. Singledigit temperatures are on the way, as people continue to dig out. I guess you have to roll with the punches. Reporter this new jersey postal workers route was brought to a screeching halt when his mail truck was surrounded by floodwaters. Some drivers in maine, driving flooding ice waters. And in north carolina, a group of hikers stranded on the appalachian trail. 5 00, it went from not at all to two inches in 20 minutes. Reporter the National Guard rescuing those hikers after a long, frigid night. And in new york city, newly minted mayor neil de blasio told his city 100 of primary roads have been plowed. The mayor himself even pitched in with some snow shoveling, experiencing what millions of people in the northeast are still grappling with. And in the next few days, things are going to get really tricky because its going to warm up, well above freezing. Then, its going to rain. Already on the boards this morning, we have 750 cancellations, more than that actually. And more than 2,400 delays across the country. This morning, more misery for travelers. Frozen snow, making ice rinks out of tarmacs and runways. Prompting delta to cancel dozens of flights out of new yorks jfk. And southwest to strand hundreds of passengers in chicago. Im hoping i dont have to get in the car and drive to california is all. Reporter it comes on top of nearly 3,500 Flights Canceled by airlines on friday. And more than 2,600 on thursday. The number of delayed flights since the snow first started falling, now approaching nearly 50,000. Our flights just kept getting pushed back and pushed back and pushed back. And finally canceled. Im hoping i dont have to spend another night far from home. Reporter it all means more of this. Travelers, camped out on floors, at food courts. The lucky ones on reclining camp beds. And with the weekend flight schedule up in the air, a little advice for those still hoping to head home. A heavy Holiday Weekend for people who travel. Back here at home, firefighters battled a fire at a thrift store in jackson, mississippi, friday. Local Officials Say the blaze erupted inside the salvation army, destroying the building. The store was packed to capacity because of all of the holiday donations, which will leave many needy families out essentials. Investigators are looking into what caused that fire. An armed man wearing an incredible hulk mask is captured on surveillance video. Cameras caught the robber pulling out a gun in a store in atlanta, demanding money while customers shopped nearby. He even wiped the counter clean of prints so he wouldnt get caught. This is not the first time the masked man held up the store. Earlier this month, he walked into the same store, donning the same disguise and got away both times. And phil everly, the rock pioneer known for his pitchperfect harmonies has the music world in mourning after he passed away overnight. Phil everly, half of the pioneer rock duo, the Everly Brothers, passed away friday due to complicationed from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, according to his wife, patty. From the release of their first album in 1958, phil and his older brother, don, amassed 35 hits over a 50year career. Those who toured with him remember him fondly. Nancy sinatra tweeting, phil everly is gone. Touring with phil and don was one of the thrills of my life. I love you, phillip. Godspeed. This is the same strain that in 2009 spread around the world and caused the pandemic. They dont cause uppandemics bu they cause a lot of flu. We have to take it seriously. Does it look like were heading into a particularly bad season . And what can our viewers do about it . You cant tell how severe the season is going to be. But that uptick tells us were in the middle of it. Its not too late to get vaccinated, even in the areas seeing flu. You want to get the vaccine. You want to do a lot of hand washing, cover your cough, stay home if youre sick. And this year, im calling for more fistbumps than handshakes. I think you can cut down on spreading the germs. What about elbowpumps . Even better. Hands are the way the flu gets transmitted. If we cut back on that, you may stay healthier. You and i could make the elbowbump very cool. How did this happen . And how did they get here out . Reena ninan is on the story. Reporter it started as a simple game of hide and seek and ended in a rescue operation. I have an 11yearold daughter. She is stuck in a washing machine. Dont ask me how. Reporter determined to beat her sisters and cousins, 11yearold Trinity Rhodes hid inside the washing machine and was stuck. She was hanging out of this part right here. I could only see from about hereup. And she was quite panicked. Reporter at first, the kids employed their own rescue tactics before notifying any adults. They dont want to be in trouble. Reporter so, the kids pretreated her, so to speak. They got some butter. Rubbed her up with butter. Reporter there was even a rinse cycle. Eventually, the local Fire Department had to be called. The patient had been in there 45 minutes. She started to panic, complaining of a lot of pain, troubles breathing. Teleka patrick vanished almost a month ago from the hospital where she worked. Now, were learning she may have been obsessed with a famous singer. Patricks family has hired a private investigator, a new one. They got rid of their old one. The new investigator, jim karlan, believes the foul play is involved with her disappearance. Hes going to go back and talk to all the people he knows. And in the end, he believes the case can be solved. Its baffled authorities so far. Imagine youre here with me. Reporter this morning, the bizarre twist in the case of a michigan doctor who has been missing for almost a month. A private investigator hired by the family says, we may now know who Teleka Patrick was talking to in these youtube videos, in which she is cooking, buying flowers for and singing to. If you were here, this would be your place. Reporter a mystery man. I never could have made it reporter one possibility, grammy winner pastor sapp. Patrick was obsessed with him. Here on Good Morning America that sapp obtained a personal protection order against the 30yearold psychiatrist, three months before she went missing on the night of december 5th. According to court documents, sapp alleges he has at least 400 pages of correspondence from patrick. She joined his church, went to his home, contacted his children and even referred to sapp as her husband. Friday, sapp released this statement to abc news. Given these previous acts, i have taken several security measures, which have included obtaining a protective order to ensure our safety. I begged her to get mental help. Reporter patricks exhusband says erratic behavior from patrick is what started the demise of their relationship. Speaking to inside edition. When i urged her to get help, she told me she didnt need any help and i was trying to destroy her career. Reporter patricks family was shocked when they found out about the protection order. But say it doesnt change the fact that patricks car was found in a ditch off i94 with a flat tire, 100 miles from where she worked, with her car keys still inside but no sign of the doctor. Investigators say the evidence in this case does not necessarily point to foul play. But they are working to bring patrick home as quickly as possible. Whats really confusing. Interesting, new information. But unclear if its connected to her disappearance in any way. Whether its really going to help the investigation go forward. Tai, thank you. In the news this morning, russian president Vladimir Putin is loosening a grip in sochi where the olympics will be held. An order on the kremlins website today say the demonstrations not connected with the games may be held in places or along routes approved by the government. All demonstrations had been banned until today. And a final report points to speed as the major factor in the fiery crash that killed actor paul walker. According to the Los Angeles County coroners office, the Porsche Walker was riding in may have been going over 100 miles per hour. Investigators found no mechanical problems with the car. The crash has been ruled an accident. Investigators are now looking at a helmet camera worn by formula one driver Michael Schumacher for clues into last weeks skiing accident. Meanwhile, his spokesperson says his condition is critical but stable. The racing legislate suffered a brain injury while hitting a rock while skiing last weekend in france.
