We are back to what passes as normal here in the nations capitol. A woman driving at high speed, disrupted congress in mid session. A wild, highspeed chase on americas most important street. The pennsylvania avenue power canyon between the white house and capitol hill, lit up by gunfire. It began at 2 12 in the afternoon. The car rammed a barrier on the Southeast Side of the white house. And secret service watched. One of the uniformed agents bumped into in the process. They give chase up pennsylvania avenue, where they corner to driver at the base of capitol hill, near the botanical gardens. Its around 2 20. Guns drawn and a parole car behind. The suspects car manages to escape, reversing, bumping the Police Vehicle and speeding off. Its here that police first fire at the car. I heard the gunshots and the car tore out of the area. Reporter the camera man, an arabic speaker is stunned. He follows the car as it circles the peace monument, and up constitution avenue, towards the capital building. Slams into another barrier. Police open fire again, killing the unarmed suspect, a woman identified as 34yearold miriam carey of connecticut. All as stunned capitol hill workers watched. The police are coming after a car. Then, the car was just it kept going. And then, they boxed him in. Reporter then, another surprise. In the backseat once i got a little closer, i could make it a Police Officer taking a child away from the scene. Reporter members of congress were in lockdown for nearly an hour during the chaos. Police advising them to id their identities. Are you a member of congress . I said, yeah, i am. Let me see your identification. I pulled out my identification. He told me to take the pin off. He said, you can be a target. Reporter police say there was no terrorism involved. Just a deranged woman driving at high speed, trying to get into the capitol. George . Jim, thanks. Lets get more on miriam carey. Abcs Pierre Thomas examined where she came from and what may have triggered her snap. Reporter today, police are dissecting the womans life, looking for a clue. Something that would tell them why, what led her to come to washington. Overnight, Miriam Careys mother told abc news, her daughter had no history of violence. And confirms she has struggled since the birth of her 1yearold daughter in august of last year. She had postpartum depression after having the baby, her mother said. Family and friends are shocked. She has a wonderful life. It doesnt make any sense at all. Reporter thursday night, police in hazmat suits surrounded an Apartment Building in stamford, connecticut. They were searching for computers, notes, anything that could point to motive. Carey who worked as a dental hygienist is described by her boss as always happy and a nonpolitical person. Dr. Steven oken tells abc news, its the further thing i would suspect her to do, especially with her child in the car. Friends describe carey as very professional and foe cutsed. She moved to stamford, connecticut, because new york rents were so high. And they said carey never expressed sentiments about the government. Her friend just saw her on tuesday. Everything was okay. A little joke. And she went about her business. Its just reporter careys mother told us she didnt know why she was in washington. Like us, the family has so many questions. Robin . And we are all still searching for answers. Thank you, pierre. Now, to reports that miriam carey may have been suffering from postpartum depression, as we told you about. We want to bring in abcs chief medical editor, dr. Rich besser. What are the symptoms of that, rich . A lot of women will have mood changes after they have a baby. 10 will have postpartum depression. Its typical things you see with depression. Lack of interest in the world. Trouble with sleeping and appetite. With postpartum depression, you have trouble sleeping when the baby sleeps. There may be lack of enjoyment in being a new mom. And you may have guilt about not being a good mother. And anxiety that something bad could happen to your baby. And what happened in washington, d. C. , rich, is that consistent with postpartum depression . We only know what her mother said. We havent seen her Mental Health records. This is very unusual. Usually with depression, you have lack of energy. Trouble getting out of bed. Not a problem with reality. Theres postpartum psychosis where you lose connection. That would be more likely. For someone with depression to get in a car and drive from connecticut to washington, that doesnt sound like depression. As you said, were learning more and more. And were getting this information from her mother about postpartum and mental illness. And this is something that you have said, as a nation, we need to address more. People who have these kind of issues. Thats right. For women who have postpartum depression, its common, its rarely treatable. And there shouldnt be a fear youre going to do Something Like this that could put your own child in deputy. You want to make sure you dont stigmatize that. But clearly, theres something that speaks to mental illness. I think well find out more about that in the days to come. Rich, thank you. So grateful that baby in the car is okay. Thank you, rich. Were going to turn to sam with the latest on Tropical Storm karen, making its move on the gulf coast. And could make landfall, not once, but twice. Twice, we think now. Were watching a shift in the pattern. We have an alive Weather Board for were going to do the tropics now. Were going to come back with a snowstorm with a blizzard possibly. A line of severe storms and tornadoes lining up. All this happening at the same time. Karen first. The most imminent threat to our shoreline right now. You watch this storm put itself together. The Hurricane Center is looking at dry air in both locations. Being squeezed a bit more to the west. And then, making an eastern as a powerful cold front causing so much trouble in the nation, bends this system down. We show you that we think by sunday morning, its right here. In the southernmost tip of louisiana. And hopping over that little area of the gulf coast. And making another mark at land, probably at that alabama florida line, right in that area. Near mobile, near pensacola, kind of in that zone. One of the things with this may not be the rain. But the onshore flow of the water and the extra tide and the winds. All of that is pushing that water along the gulf coast. Staying a Tropical Storm, says the Hurricane Center at this point. Well watch it momentbymoment. And with no sign of a deal this weekend, president obama canceled his planned trip to asia next week. Jon karl at the white house. And this is a blow to american diplomacy. But the president really had no choice. Reporter he didnt, george. These were two, significant summits in brunei and indonesia. The white house says he could legally have gone. But he needs to be here to push for reopening the government and dealing with the pending possible default of the government. The white house put out a statement, blaming it on republicans. Saying the consolation of this trip is another consequence of House Republicans forcing a shutdown of the government. This completely avoidable shutdown is setting back our ability to create jobs through promotion of u. S. Exports and advance u. S. Leadership in the region. George, really, a pretty big deal here. These were two significant summits. The white house did not want to cancel this trip. Were seeing some movement by house speaker, john boehner, to avoid that debt limit showdown in a couple of weeks, defaulting the united states. Reporter boehner is telling colleagues privately, he will not allow a default of the u. S. Government. That ultimately, he will do whatever he can to ensure that the debt ceiling is increased. But that does not mean youre out of the woods here because he has also said he will need to have something in the way of deficit reduction to be able to get at least enough republicans to vote for it to get it to pass. As you know, the white house is saying they wont give anything in exchange for the debt ceiling. Boehner is saying for the first time, that he might allow a bill on the floor that would attract democratic support. Thats right. Thats a necessity. He needs democrats to pass such a bill. We begin with a massive cyber attack on a tech company that makes software used by nearly everyone who has a personal computer. Abcs linzie janis is here with the latest on that. Good morning. Reporter good morning, robin. Police say they have found their mostwanted man in this case. And are working to bring him into custody. For the first time, we sat down with the biker who said he was driving alongside the range rover. And it was lien who was driving aggressively. This morning, Police Believe theyve identified the prime suspect in this highway horror. They say the man seen here smashing the window of alexian liens range rover, also pulled the banker out of the suv and beat him. These photos apparently show lien on the ground, surrounded by bikers. His wife hanging out the passenger side door and clutching their 2yearold daughter. The brutal attack, following this infamous caught on tape moment. Panicked. They sway through the swarm of bikers, leaving one paralyzed. In a statement, liens wife said, our fear for our lives was confirmed when the incident ended with the ruthless and brutal attack on my husband, me and most importantly, our 2yearold child. This morning, for the first time, a biker on that ride, telling abc news, it was lien who was at fault. He started from this lane, to that lane. Speeding up. And this is the reason why he was surrounded. Nobody attacked him before you see the video. Reporter it wasnt just the liens that felt terrorized by the bikers. Today, the family of the seriously injured biker will hold a News Conference with their attorney, gloria allred, to, quote, set the record straight how the biker was injured and to respond to the statement from the lien family. Abcs matt gutman has been tracking the story from the start. And you spoke, matt, to kaitlyn hunt. Want to change your plea reporter this morning, kaitlyn hunt is one step closer to home. Are you relieved . I am, actually. I no e when im coming home. Reporter earlier this year, the 19yearold former cheerleader, was arrested, charged with lewd and lis sieves you battery of a miner. The High School Senior was romantically involved with a 14yearold freshman girl. And faced a maximum of 30 years in prison and a place on the second offender registry if convicted. Hunt has always insisted the sex was consensual. I think i made a mistake by dating someone in high school. I went to cool with. Reporter she pled no contest thursday to four misdemeanors and a felony. You see her in the orange jump suit. How does it make you feel . Sad. Reporter this was hunts third offer for a plea agreement. State prosecutors say the family rejected the first two plea deals, insisting hunt was being targeted because she was in a samesex relationship. But then if they find out reporter prosecutors found a trove of 20,000 Text Messages and lewd photos. Investigators say hunt violated the judges no contact orders with the victim in a big way. It appears through the Text Messages, hunt was hoping to keep that control over the victim, in hopes that the victim wouldnt testify against her. Reporter the judge put her back in jail. And inside those texts, a glimpse inside a relationship the 14yearolds parents called abusive. The threatening tone, posted on our daughter, put our daughter in a place that made her feel she had to abide. Reporter we read some of the texts. You were pretty cruel to her. I was hurt from the whole situation. Just how everything came out. Reporter hunt had called her professed love stupid and pimplefaced. But today, shes unapologetic. Do you concede that your girlfriend was a victim in this . I dont feel like shes a victim, no. Reporter as part of the plea, hunt will spend another 70 days in jail. And she faces two years of house arrest after that. Its a bitter pill for a girl voted most School Spirit in her high school. But she wont be listed as a felon or a sex offender. Being in a relationship, she doesnt think was improper in any way. She was fighting that. Lets get more from abcs chief Legal Affairs anchor, dan abrams. And it seems to be headed towards some sort of deal. Shes not denying it happened. Once the prosecution decides to move forward and charges her with a crime, shes facing serious time behind bars. Whats she going to do . Go to trial on something she is admitting she did . No way. She had to accept a deal. You get to the question. Should prosecutors have brought a case like this in the first place . Thats a separate question, right . Thats where, if youre the potential defendant in a case like this, you want to put pressure on the prosecutor not to bring it. The problem is, the minute the parents of the alleged victim call and they say, weve got proof that our underaged son or daughter was having sex with an older kid, meaning, in this case, 18. Prosecutors hands are kind of tied. They have to move forward. If the parents are saying, they want justice, we want you to do something about this, this is against the law. As a technical legal matter it is against the law. That was the real factor. Not the fact it was a samesex relationship. I dont think this is about samesex. The parents complained to the police. We see this in cases where theyre not samesex at all. Now, to the latest on that newlywed accused of killing her husband, just eight days after their wedding by pushing him off a cliff. Jordan lynn graham has been officially charged with murder. And is expected to be arraigned in court later today. Abcs Lindsey Davis has the story. Reporter this morning, jordan graham, the 22yearold montana newlywed woman accused of pushing her husband off a cliff, is expected to land in court. The fbi says the young bride killed her 25yearold husband, cody johnson, a little more than a week after she walked down the aisle. But for the three months since his death, graham has remained free. Even after Authorities Say she admitted to pushing johnson facefirst off a cliff at Glacier National park. A federal judge ordered her released, and demanding she undergo Mental Health evaluations. Johnsons friends and family say theyre relieved shes finally charged. Justice will be served. At the end of the day, were still missing a huge part of our lives. Reporter graham now faces charges of firstdegree murder, seconddegree murder and making false statements. Fbi agents say for days before his body was discovered at the bottom of the cliff back in july, she had tried to cover up the crime. In court documents, a federal agent writes, graham falsely represented that codely johnsons car buddies from washington probably came and got him. When in truth, and fact, as jordan linn graham then and there well knew she was with cody johnson when he last went to Glacier National park. But eight days before she allegedly pushed him off a cliff, graham and her new husband enjoyed their first dance to a song written just for them. A song about falling. Her deposition is being sought in a lawsuit against the church ands leader. Dan harris is here with more on the story. Reporter good morning. Leah reminis split from the church of scientology has made headlines for months. But the latest development may be more than she bargained for. She is being pulled into the middle of a hotlycontested lawsuit. Just ten days ago, she criticized the charge of scientology on dancing with the stars. They want me to fail. Reporter now comes news that attorneys in texas want leah remini to play a part in a new lawsuit against the church of scientology and its leader. The suit is being brought by this woman. She is the wife of former marty went public with arty. Criticisms of the church and david miscavige. They were subjected to a wave of harassment by Church Members. This is video marty posted online, of what he says are scientologists, who regularly confronted the couple with video cameras. In an affidavit obtained by abc news, monique, who was never a Church Member herself, alleges that scientology investigators also visited her family members, friends and coworkers. Someone sent flowers to the receptionist with a sexual message on the card, supposedly from me. It was mortifying at work. How do you explain that to people . This case is not about them coming after me. This face is about them targeting my wife. Reporter attorneys for the church and miscavige have argued the suit is without merit. And theyre trying to get miscavige dropped from the case, saying he has no connection to the alleged incidents. And calling the claims against him rank harassment. Rathbuns Attorney Says he is sending leah remini a subpoena. He wants to depose her, saying that miscavige has influence over the church. And had to have known about the harassment. The church says, this is nothing but a getrichquick scheme, cooked up by marty rathbun, using his wife to extort money from the church. Overnight sources told us she is not pleased being drawn into this lawsuit. She is hoping that the lawyer will reconsider the efforts to subpoena her. Thank you so much.
