We thought it was the right thing to do. Oprah is a special guest. Our car wasnt completely clean which isnt always a good thing. Oprah was gracious. What took you so long . Of course, we were late. Look at you. I know. Ali didnt have time to get dressed. Oprah wasnt ready, either. We have a lot to get to this morning. Really something. Youre a patient man. Im not sure my wife would agree with that. But thank you. We have a lot to get to. Both candidates in the president ial race, turning up the Charm Offensive in the final days. Its all about the turnout right now. Big rallies for both candidates. They have to drive the vote out in the final 12 days. The new polls show the race as tight as ever. Mitt romney staying strong after the debates. But is it enough to overcome president obamas advantage in the key states . Also on the show today, we have an emotional and revealing interview coming up with country star leann rimes, after treatment for stress and anxiety. Lets get straight to Hurricane Sandy, heading into the caribbean right now. It could be targeting the east coast next. Sam has been tracking the latest on this killer storm. Sam, a lot of people worried about this one. And with good reason. When you look at what were about to show you, youll see why were concerned about this storm anyway. Lets show you the deepening center of this storm, as it exploded in strength overnight. Look at the dark center there, as it hopped off jamaica to cuba. Thats the center of the storm. The water is 80s. Its going to stay the same strength, or weaken over the next few hours as it heads to the bahamas. As we look at whats ahead for the storm and the combination of storms headi ining towards it, reminds us a lot of a storm in recent history. Sandy will roar through the caribbean, after pounding jamaica and cuba. This storm has already taken two lives. And forecasters fear it will soon be similar to another powerful storm that occurred in 1991. Looking at 40foot to 50foot waves, gale force winds. It will be the perfect storm. Reporter but the perfect storm stayed off the coast of new england, when hurricane grace joined with a powerful noreaster, bringing 50foot waves and galeforce winds. Look out. Reporter this storm could be worse. And forecasters say it could blast much of the east coast, even coming onshore, starting this weekend. As Hurricane Sandy moves up the coast, it will meet up with an arctic front moving across the u. S. And get extra support from the jet stream, with a blast of arctic air from the north. Three elements colliding over the countrys most populated corridor. This is exactly what steers that storm system. Right now, the idea is that sandy will continue to weaken as it moves up the atlantic seaboard. But this front has a tendency to draw systems toward it. Any cold front kind of does. It looks like this system will get so far and then try to make a little hook in. That hook will be anywhere from the delmarva since la, to the long island area, right there. We believe this storm system will be a hybrid storm by the time it moves there. And the forecast models are kind of agreeing with that. They were laying it out to the atlantic. One or two still do. But most of them in the trusted models will curve this in as we get to monday and tuesday next week. Making a big rainmaker, flooding. A lot of trees down, a lot of power outages. Well follow it, momentbymoment. The race for the white house now. Its your voice, your vote, with just 12 days to go. President obama and governor romney in a final sprint across the key battleground states. The president flying overnight to florida. Jake tapper is in tampa right now. Good morning, jake. Reporter good morning, george. It is a dogfight. And the latest abc News Washington post poll, mitt romney is up one point in the national, popular vote. But in a new poll out of ohio, a critical state, president obama is up five points. Overnight, president obama launched a new attack against romney. While you were sleeping, president obama was campaigning. A nighttime rally in las vegas with katy perry. Baby, youre a firework reporter the third of the day, in as many states. Where he continued to suggest mitt romney is not trustworthy. In the final weeks of this election, hes been counting on you to forget. Hes hoping you come down with what . Romnesia. Hes hoping you come down with what we call romnesia. Reporter he visited the tonight show with jay leno where he addressed the comments made by richard mourdock, who said this in a debate tuesday, why he opposes abortion in the case of rape. When life begins in the horrible situation of rape, that is something that god intended to happen. I dont know how these guys come up with these ideas. Let me make a very simple proposition. Rape is rape. Reporter a position the president is trying to tie to mitt romney, with tweets, emails and this new web ad highlighting how running mate paul ryan also opposes abortion in cases of rape. Campaigning in two states, mitt romney tried to sound the note of inevitability. The Obama Campaign is slipping and shrinking. Our campaign is a growing Movement Across this country. Reporter this week also brought some odd side shows. Romney surrogate donald trump offered to give 5 million to a charity of the president s choice, if the president released his College Records and passport application. I have a deal for the president. Whats this thing with trump and you . This all dates back to when we were growing up together in kenya. [ laughter ] reporter over the next week, both campaigns and their official surrogates and allies will spend about 80 million in battleground state, just on tv ads. Including this one, featuring clint eastwood. And this one, featuring the first lady. Of course, early voting is a huge deal here in florida and in other battleground states, george. Overnight in nevada, president obama met with some Union Workers at the Bellagio Hotel and casino. He urged them to vote early if in case on election day they have to pull a doubleshift. Onethird of voters voting by election day. Jake, thanks very much. Lets get to josh with the headlines. Good morning. Were going to start with the federal government hitting bank of america with a billiondollar lawsuit for its role in the mortgage collapse. A program called the hustle, to crank out loans as quickly as possible. The feds say, the hustle, which began at countrywide, before bank of america bought it, resulted in thousands of risky, rubberstamp loans that then went bad. The price of meat, everything from beef to chicken and turkey, is about to skyrocket. The government warning consumers that many farmers recently sold off their animals because of the extreme drought in the country. That means theres a temporary glut of meat on the market right now. But when that supply dwindles, one expert warns prices will be shooting up, and i quote, in a big way, end quote. And the death toll from the National Meningitis outbreak has now climbed to 24. The latest victim of a steroid shot for back pain in indiana. 317 people in the states you see highlighted here have gotten sick. Now, the cdc says that patients are at high risk for as long as six weeks after being injected. The fbi is hoping to question a man arrested in connection with the deadly attack on the u. S. Consulate in libya. 28yearold ali karsi is facing terrorism charges in tunisia. His attorney claims that his client is only a scapegoat to satisfy america. A second suspect has been killed in egypt. A historic game one of the world series. Giants slugger pablo sandoval, third baseman nicknamed the panda, hit not one, not two, but three home runs. Joining babe ruth, Reggie Jackson and Albert Pujols to do that. Those of us on the east coast got to go to bed a little early. Finally, you dont have to be a grownup to make a difference in this world. Look what 11yearold dante cano from new jersey did. He had an idea the other day. He was watching football. And he thought, why do the refs penalty flags have to be yellow . Why cant they be pink for Breast CancerAwareness Month . So, he wrote a letter to roger goodell, the commissioner of the nfl, which has partnered with the folks at susan g. Komen and have made pink gear a part of the monthlong in the nfl. But guess what. This sunday, at the jets game, first time in 50 years, the refs flags will be pink. I love it. Yay. Thanks to dante. It was a 40word letter from a fifth grader. We know why a little boy would want to do that . We dont know why. But perhaps, you know, feeling better for his fellow man and fellow woman. But sent it off. 40 words later, he got it done. All right, josh. Thanks so much. We turn, now, to very serious news and a shocking update in the death of 10yearold Jessica Ridgeway. Police arrested a 17yearold. Austin reed sigg is set to make his First Court Appearance today. Abcs Clayton Sandell has the story. Reporter investigators overnight scoured the westminster, colorado, home where austin sigg lives with his mother. Fbi agents combed the backyard for clues. Police towed away his car. I believe we have taken a significant step towards justice for jessica. Reporter sources tell abc news that sigg confessed the crime to his mother, who called police so her son could turn himself in. Austin has known the suspect since elementary school. He was never thought he would go this far. Reporter sigg is a Community College student where classmates say he was studying mortuary science. In high school, he took part in a competition involving crime scene investigations, or csi. Its not uncommon for people who abduct women to be fascinated by crime and crime detection. Reporter jessica vanished october 5th on her walk to scho. Her body was found a few days later. Sigg lives less than a mile from her home, about a halfmile from her school and close to this reservoir. Thats where he allegedly attacked a female jogger in may, covering her face with a rag that smelled like chemicals. Authorities are also looking at this Youtube Video that briefly shows a boy that looks like sigg, wearing a small cross. It appears to be similar to one that police say was found at the crime scene. I never put two and two together. Reporter with the suspect now under arrest, people in Jessica Ridgeways Community Hope their nightmare is over. Its terrifying. I dont know why somebody could do this to somebody else. Reporter later this morning, sigg will be in court for his initial appearance, facing charges of kidnapping and murder. The judge says he will charge the 17yearold as an adult. As a juvenile, he will not be eligible for the death penalty. For more, now, lets bring in gma analyst dan abrams. We heard clayton say, police are charging sigg as an adult. He will be tried as an adult. 17 is not the lowest age. You can go younger in the state of colorado and be charged as an adult. As you heard him say, the Supreme Court has ruled that no one under the age of 18 can be charged with the death penalty. Can face the possibility of the death penalty. So, thats the only protection he has as a juvenile. But for now, he is still effectively considered a juvenile. Thats quickly going to change. Interesting if his age becomes an issue with his confession. He waved his right. Could age be a factor as we go forward . Its something his team will undoubtedly bring up when trying to get his confession excluded, if they do. But it is not likely going to be a winning argument. They have to come up with more than just his age. They could probably argue his age with conjunction of other things. Very unlikely. His mother was involved in turning him in, et cetera. So, i would think theyre going to have a tough time getting that confession excluded. Dan abrams, thanks so much. We appreciate your time. Now, to the growing debate over the future of football. Millions of kids across the country are going to take the field this weekend. But a doctor in one town has sparked a fierce response for his call on parents to put a stop to the sport in high school. Abcs dan harris has the story. Reporter High School Football, an american institution. And reflected time and again by hollywood. So, when this mildmannered School Board Member at a sparselyattended meeting in dover, New Hampshire, introduced a radical idea. We have a moral imperative to begin the process of ending this game. Reporter the board member in question is paul butler. A retired doctor and former High School Football player himself, who says the beloved Dover High School team, the green wave, has to go. The legislature is clear. This is a dangerous game for children to be playing. Reporter espn Sports Science says big blows like this one can be the equivalent of taking a sledgehammer to the head. Its not just pro football. New studies show that kids that play High School Football and Peewee League football, are exposing themselves to the dangers of head trauma. A game that uses the head as a battering ram, is not a smart game to allow a youngster to play. Reporter butler has his critics, including the school board chairman, the local paper. And check out how Rush Limbaugh describes critics of football. Pantywaists who want to try to take the risk out of everything in life. Reporter butler admits he does not have the votes to ban football right now. But given the mounting evidence, he says his proposal is a first step toward the inevitable. For Good Morning America, dan harris, abc news, new york. Theres no question, this debate is not going away. Thats not going anywhere. Guess what. Someone isnt going anywhere anytime soon. Its the end of the line for one of floridas most notorious outlaws. There he is. The mystery monkey of tampa bay. He was brought down by an elaborate primate sting operation. Steve osunsami had the story. Reporter hes the most celebrated fugitive monkey in the country. With songs to his name. Youre the mystery monkey reporter somehow eluding florida authorities for three, whole years. Now, hes in the clinger. Weve been chasing him for three years. Reporter months ago, they had him cornered. But slippery as a banana peel, he was able to shake off the tranquilizer darts and scamper away. On television, its Stephen Colberts monkey on the lam. It may not be a monkey at all. Reporter his latest post to his nearly 90,000 fans on Facebook Says it all. Today, my freedom has been taken away from me. Catching him was like mission impossible. Luckily, the target is a sucker for bananas. Trappers set up a cage outside of the home of a woman he had bitten three weeks ago. Last friday, he managed to get in and out scottfree. But wednesday was a monkey ambush. The womans daughter spotting him on a low tree branch, luring him to the cage with another banana. When he went for the food, snipers busted out of the bushes. He will be held for 30 days, roughly, to make sure no one does claim him. At that point, well try to find him a home. Reporter they think hes a lost pet that traveled more than 100 miles.
