[ siren ] >> oh, my god. >> reporter: nature's fury caught on tape. >> back up! >> reporter: the monster tornadoes, part of a violent line of twisters that demolished towns in five state, killing at least 38 people. >> unbelievable. >> reporter: more than 100 tornado reports since friday. at least 42 confirmed. this one packing winds as high as 175 miles per hour. this ef-4 tornado did this to the town of marysville, indiana. the destruction we see from the ground is mind-numbing from above. oh. schools and homes annihilated. this house is an example of why you have to get to the lower-most part of your home. the top of that house is completely ripped off. and the bottom, they had a basement. but no one upstairs. the storm blasted nearly 70 miles per hour. southwest, northeast, and get this, it wasn't alone. at least one other twister followed the same track just minutes later. this is likely to be the place where it is a half a mile wide. a half mile wide with those in attack. the foundations even rearranging the lumber yard. it's hard to view from up here. 52 miles. here's the really bad part. a lot of the speakers and computer monitors, anything that could have been potentially salvageable, now covered in snow. coming up, here's what i'm going to do. i'll give you an idea of if they have more winter weather in the hard-hit areas and of course, i'll look at the nation's weather. back to you. >> all right, ginger. so touching to see the american flag hanging after a disaster like that. so many stories emerging. abc's matt gutman has been tracking them from west liberty, kentucky. good morning, matt. >> good morning, robin. a field of snow, actually a neighborhood sfo72 hours ago. they hope to start clearing the debris, instead, they're contending with piles of wet, heavy snow. so heavy, they're afraid it will start collapsing rooftops. there are other hazards here. this 2 by 4 sticking out of the snow with nails in it. >> take it away from us, lord! >> reporter: she blasts skyward. >> take it away from my home! take it away from this town! >> reporter: a mystery use woman in this video begging god to let this tornado pass. the tornado battered kentucky as prayers resonated. so we set out to find her with electricity out, it wasn't easy. finally -- >> we watched it form. then the monster was above it, i began then to pray. >> take it away from us! >> it knocked the porch right off? >> it knocked the porch right off. >> reporter: and it worked. her house still standing. ♪ >> reporter: despite congregations coming acrosshis region, prayers for the youngest left unanswered. >> she looked and lifted her arms straight up. she wanted to go to her daddy. >> reporter: true to her name, angel babcock is in heaven her grandmother tells abc news, just 14 months old, babcock held on. for two days she was a tiny source of hope. >> one thing i can say, they're all together. and that is -- that is comforting. >> reporter: hundreds showing up at this donation site. moved by stories of survival and faith. folks like dwayne phillips who managed to outrun the tornado in the car. >> i felt, we're helpless, we got to do something to help all of these people. >> right now, residents, robin, are telling us they need simple things, things like shovel to help clear the debris on the ground. and it could be several days before the hundreds of homeless finally get back to neighborhoods like this one. >> now josh elliott has the other top stories. good morning. we're going to begin with a critical meeting at the white house. president obama meets face-to-face with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu, one day after urging israel to give diplomacy a chance. abc's jake tapper joins us now. jake, it's fair to say, in the recent past, the relations between please two have been strained. but if president obama and prime minister netanyahu both agree iran can't be allowed to get a nuclear weapon, where do they still disagree? abc news exclusive, nick cannon, the first interview since a major health scare led to him leaving his radio slow. and his wife mariah carey. let's get to the new developments in the grosse pointe park case. michigan police have arrested a handyman who confessed to the murder more than a month ago. >> good morning, robin. this continues to be such a puzzling case. we now have an arrest, so many open questions as well, including when jane bashara's husband is in the clear. >> here he is, joe gantt, a former handyman, a man who sources say has the i.q. of a third grader right before he turned himself in. moments later, had would walk into a room in this courthouse, filled with law enforcement officers, through the open door, you can hear it. just days after jane bashara, a well-known, well-loved, well to do business woman was found strangled in her mercedes suv, he reportedly confessed to the crime, telling police conflicting and confusing stories about jane's husband job bashara for whom he used to do odd jobs, offered him money and then forced him at gun point to kill jane in the garage of their upscale home in grosse pointe, michigan. one of the richest towns in america. >> did you kill jane bashara. >> just panicking. >> reporter: according to a friend, he's trying to do the right thing. >> he wants justice done for both families. >> reporter: but there are so many questions, why did police wait more than a month after the original confession to make the arrest? and what does it now mean for bob bashara. in an interview with andrea canning bashara denied it outright. >> i don't own a firearm. i don't have anything to do with this. this is a sick assessment on his part. it shows how deranged he is. >> reporter: but there is a cloud hanging over bob bashara whshed those tears. in those early days, so much spilled out about him, that he was a person of interest, reportedly failed a polygraph, had a mistress. in an abc news interview, his daughters stood by him. >> i just know how my mom felt about him. there was not a hint towards violence. >> bob bashara's attorney said his client is very relieved to have bill gantz off the street. he said i do not have a chris cal ball. >> in your piece, talking about it six weeks? >> over a month. over a month. and we don't know why it took so long for that arrest to happen. >> maybe we'll learn more. dan, thank you. we turn to the controversy kicked up by that story we brought you last week. the 41-year-old high school teacher who left his wife and kids for a student in class. the professor insists they did nothing wrong and they want to build a life together. abc's sell sececelia vegas sat down with them. >> reporter: good morning, they realize people raised their eyebrows but they say they're in it for the long haul, despite is will be an uphill battle. they say they are in love. they are definitely defiant. >> i don't think we have regrets per se. >> reporter: until just a few weeks ago, james hooker was jordan power's high school teacher. today, they are boyfriend and girlfriend. she is 18. he is 41. >> do you realize that most people hearing your story are going to judge what you've done? >> we know there's a lot of opinions, and most of it doesn't agree with us. >> reporter: we first met this controversial couple last week. since then, the story of their romance has drawn criticism and raised questions. so with their permission, we asked psycho analyst dr. bethany marshall to sit down with them as our cameras rolled. can they make it? >> i think the biggest challenge the two of you are going to face is that you have a us against the world kind of attitude. and when that attitude gets taken too far, it can be very paranoid. and paranoia is the belief that other people are wishing ill to you but you play no fault. >> reporter: powers and hooker maintain they became physical only after she turned 18 when it would have been legal. but police are now investigating. >> i think people get caught up in our role. i was apr teacher. she was a students. but they also forget i chose not to continue teaching. i chose to walk away before we took our relationship to a certain level. >> reporter: hooker resigned moved into an apartment with powers and left his family, including a 17-year-old daughter who attends the same school. >> how do you think of it, is she a friend, a potential stepdaughter? is she a peer? >> she would be a potential stepdaughter. we weren't friends. we were acquaintances. >> reporter: now for the first time, powers' family is speaking publicly through their pastor. who told us this is a very difficult time for them as they work through the pain caused by james' decision to abandon his family. >> i think "abandon" is a choice word. i think they probably do feel abandoned. there's nothing i can do at this moment in time to stop that feeling. >> james does what sex offenders often do. he disavows culpability while doing the same actions. he's saying he's not responsible for. >> reporter: hooker adamantly denies that label but went on the defensive when discussing his family. >> your duty to your children is not to the rest of the world? >> when he ended up in a couple hospitals. now, he's doing better. he's going to -- like he always does, turns something that happened into a positive thing. >> nick cannon joins us live. it's been a challenging year. >> hurdles are made to jump over. >> first of all, good morning. >> good morning. >> you look lovely as always. >> mariah has got you trained so well, nick. i love that about you. a lot of young people in the studio this morning, they were looking over at you snapping pictures because you scared us. >> i scared a lot of people. i scared myself. i always considered myself in good shape. working out all the time. never would think that, you know, i would have a health issue. so it just kind of came out of nowhere. but that's kind of why i'm even here today. everyone should be aware of their body and putting the right things in their body and taking care of themselves. i thought i was doing the right thing. i was kind of overloading my body. you can go too hard as well. >> that's what you found out that you were doing. it's a lupus-like autoimmune disease. >> yes. >> what exactly is that and what is the treatment for? >> it's a few treatments i've gone back and forth since the top of the year. but really what it is, it's a rare form of lupus that's just attacking my kidneys. i think the condition -- the technical term is lupus nephritis. i found out it was attacking my kidneys. i'm dealing with it. it's something i'm not used to medicine. i've never been one that liked to take medicine, pills. i feel like i'm starting to find out holistic ways, medication to get through it. it's not easy. >> a learning process. >> absolutely. the diet is the worst part. >> what does it entail? >> i can't have any fast food anymore. that was my favorite. >> you can't run for the border? >> nothing. no happy meals, nothing. i'm sad. but other than that, sigh mean, it's great because, you know, in all seriousness, now, i'm eating healthy. low sodium in my diet. tons of water. so i feel better, when, you know, a lot of that type of food can slow you down. >> you're keeping it real because it is difficult. people need to know that. it is a lifestyle choice. and you have to do it? >> that's right. >> and you found out going to the hospital a second time with a blood clot, that must have really opened your eyes? >> absolutely. i was feeling so much better, especially with my kidneys. my kidneys were in tip-top shape. i started to feel pain again. because of my condition, my body wasn't processing properly, i was more prone to clotting. because of my schedule and everything, i actually got a few blood clots in my lungs. doctors were saying luckily i was in such great shape and taking care of myself. a lot of people have been taken down. >> now, you are slowing down. i know you gave up the morning show. you have the syndicated show of the weekends. >> comedy. stand-up, movies. >> all your production and all of that. so are you really taking the time to do what you need to do? and what the doctors are saying? >> yes. i've been ordered to sleep at least six hours a night. before then, i would sleep like two, maybe three hours and just keep going. so they said rest is probably the best medicine. at least six hours a night. >> i think some good medicine is miss mariah carey. >> oh, that's the best medicine right there. >> how is she at home with you? >> she's awesome. so nurturing. i call her dr. carey. takes care of me. she made me an egg white sandwich before i left the house this morning. >> yummy. >> those are the things i have to eat now. no more bacon. protein, egg whites. but i love it, it keeps me healthy, too. >> it's nice that people know, they don't see that side of mari mariah. >> they don't know she's at home making egg whites and toast. two babies in her arms and grilling in the other one. >> we talked about dem babies. how has this health scare changed ayou as a father? >> it's everything when you think you want to be there for your children. in the hospital bed, that was the first thing that went in my mind, i have to be around for my children. they're kind of the motivation. >> it's beautiful partnership between the two of you. i know mariah has been active in the heart association. march is world kidney month. >> and the 8th is world kidney day. we all need to be aware of the challenges that can come with kid dney disease. it's one of those thing, everyone is focused on the heart which is important, too. but the kidneys are important as well. 26 million people in are affected also. it's something we need to create awareness for. >> you're helping to bring attention for it. you're helping to make it a positive. you look great. >> thank you. >> i hope you feel as good as you look. >> i do. i feel awesome. >> thank you, nick for coming by. hug dem babies. >> i will. now to suzanne somers, since her days as a sitcom star she mass made a fortune and stirred up controversy as a fitness guru. she has cutting edge surgery which brings hope for cancer survivors. abc's juju chang spoke with somers at her home. >> you know what this is, suzanne, that's the fountain of youth. >> reporter: she shocked the stardom as a tv sitcom goddess. >> we bought this when i wassing to "three's company." >> reporter: but suzanne is doing anti-aging regiment. enter endless lines of medicine. but most recently, she volunteered to be patient number one for an experimental breast reconstruction surgery. >> in many ways, you've made yourself a guinea pig. >> i was the first woman to legally regrow her breast using stem cells. >> reporter: it's called sell-assisted lipo transfer. fat is sucked out of the stomach. half is harvested for stem cell. suzanne said years ago a lumpectomy and radiation left her breast lopsided. there are elements which are not approved yet? >> i live with that all the time. i take it as flattery because i look so good. oh, god that makes me sound so conceited. >> reporter: but it was those good looks and her impeccable comic timing that made her so good as chrissy snow on "three's company." but after asking for the same pay as her male counterpart, she said she was abruptly fired. >> i was told at the time, i don't think they could fire me for asking for a raise, they told me john and joyce refused to work with me. therefore, i was out. for 30 years i've been harboring they refused to work with me. >> reporter: she just recently reunited with dewitt for the first time in 30 years on "breaking through." >> i was very overwhelmed. i felt sorry and i felt it had been a loss. and here i did a show about -- about a big misunderstanding that none of us ever talked all those years, and maybe we could have worked this out long ago. >> reporter: instead, suzanne had to carve out a second career as the queen of infomercials. >> i used to do aerobics until i dropped then i found thighmaster. >> reporter: it's still paying off. it does this. suzanne's husband and manager alan hamel demonstrated the thighmaster. together, they live together. >> celebrity would never sit down and say i'm 65, look at me? "of two minds" will debut on lifetime march 10th. and coming up -- maya -- george, you can help me -- she's could attachment parenting be the next wave in child care? if this author has anything to do the answer is the emphatic yes. in the new book "beyond the sling" she sat down with juju chang. welcome back. very controversial. >> very controversy '. she's always taken a very unglitzy approach. as parents we're all willing to make huge sacrifices for kids. here's what she does. she doesn't have birth, date night or schooling by any sense. but the most controversial of parenting seems the most sweet and cuddling. it was her dead-on portrayal of a young bette midler in the movie "beaches" that put her on the map. as a teenager, she starred in her own hit tv show. "blossom." then went to ucla and had a ph.d. in neuroscience. it's safe to say she's not your tippal tv star. mayhim and her husband are raising 6-year-old miles and younger brother as detachment parents. meaninging she nursed on demand, sleeps in a family bed and attends to their needs as being physically attached to them as much as possible. >> were your babies never put down? >> they were rarely put down. stayed home for 40 day. the first 40 days of our kids' lives i was basically on that couch or in bed. it's not valued in this culture. >> but then are you then surrendering your life using your terminology on your kids? >> you're surrendering your autonomy that will never look like before you had kids. >> starring in "big bang theory." >> at this moment, i find myself craving physical contact. >> a lot of people would say, what are you doing? >> i'm meeting the needs of a child who is almost done being a baby but he's not done. i know it's unusual, but like i said, when you surround yourself with other women who are intelligent, educated, and loufing who have children who they nurse well past 3 1/2, i can say i don't get to say what's right for someone else. mayim's book "beyond the sling." also practices elimination communication. or diaperless parenting. that's right, no diapering even when newborns who tend to go every six minutes or so. >> you felt it was crazy. >> i thought this was crazy. honestly, as our kids got older, i saw some fascinating relationships emerging and i saw parents who did not govern by fear. did not rule by fear. and also had fulfilling lives. ♪ >> miles is a charming musician and talented artist. he has lots of friends and interests and loves sleeping with his parents. >> we have two, fred and my mom sleep in one. >> tell the truth, does your dad snore? >> yeah. mayim is the first to say she knows her style of parenting is not for everyone. and she's heard the criticisms. the american academy of pediatrics warns against sleeping with baby it's and the city of milwaukee has made public service announcement. >> what do you make of that? >> don't sleep with a butch eer knife in bed. >> serious with, what's your reaction? >> i think it's hitting a very emotional place and not a rational one. and i think that stay close sleeping needs to be taught. >> this is not about toddlers. public health officials say it's the fear that newborns will be smothered. mayim says her family practice is safe closeness. a parent being impaired in some way, george, with drugs or alcohol, or sleep deprivation. >> you also said she's into something called unschooling?
