>> it doesn't appear she survived. >> park ranger margaret anderson was the mother of two young girls and married to a fellow park ranger. her killer was found the next day frozen to death. an evacuation in indiana has been lifted. three freight trains collided. the mangled tapgers normally full of explosive chemicals were empty because they had just unloaded. and a driver in utah is very fortunate to be alive today after he somehow managed to drive his car into the side of a train, a moving train. watch this video from a cam pra on the side of the train. he drove his dodge neon through the guardrail and it smacked into the side of the train. the driver only suffered a broken collarbone, bumps, and bruises. and finally, look out for manate rks s. these slugger sea cows. they're making their annual migration inland. they can live to be 60 years of age. they've been protected since the 1970s. i lived in florida, dozens of them get struck by boats, by boaters going too fast. some see the scars. it's rough out there for them. so slow down. >> ron, thank you. >> another water story coming up. >> you're going to like this one. to politics, "your voice, your vote." just hours from now, the republican candidates will battle it out in the debate. abc's john berman is at the site of tonight's big fight with the lat latest. good morning, john. >> reporter: good morning, bianna. six candidates on the stage, all with different goals. after this debate and what happens here on tuesday, there will likely not be six of them left in the race. this could be their last chance to break out. at a spaghetti supper last night, mitt romney was walking, talking, eating like a front-runner. taking nothing for granted. >> they can kis appear overnight. >> reporter: a new poll shows romney with a huge, 24-point lead here. enough to try and look a bit beyond republicans and focus on the president like he did overnight. >> this president doesn't understand how this economy works. he's failed here in our own economy. he failed to put americans back to work. >> reporter: so mission mitt? >> reporter: well, he has to be unflappable. because he let rick perry get to him in a previous debate. that did not reflect well on him. he's got an unsurmountable lead in all likelihood here in new hampshire. the clock is ticking. here's the problem. after new hampshire, place for retail politics like iowa, this really becomes a resource battle. who can fly around south carolina? who can run the most tv ads in florida? that is where romney has a huge advantage. he has so much more money than the other candidates. just as an example of resources. in florida, floridians who want to vote in the republican primary on january 31st, about 400,000 of them have applied for absentee ballots. that's more people than voted in iowa and new hampshire four years ago. r078ny has a big absentee ballot effort for his supporters. >> a big advantage. in terms of tonight, your advice seems to be no $10,000 bets for romney. let me ask you another question. this poll out of south carolina, we dmoe that mr. romney has a huge lead in new hampshire. he has a huge lead, upwards of 20 points, in south carolina as well. going forward, is there anything anybody can do to stop him from walking away with this thing? >> reporter: absolutely. there needs to be one credible conservati alternative to mitt romney. i'm looking at the debate podiums. right now, they're splitting up the conservative vote. perry, gingrich, santorum. if you add up the polling for santorum and gingrich, you get what romney has in south carolina. if the conservative base consolidates and unites around one candidate, that person could give mitt romney a run for his money. right now, it could be santorum. but there's no decision about that. >> jake tapper, so great to have your analysis. a reminder to everybody. don't miss tonight's debate. george and diane will moderate. tomorrow morning, live from new hampshire, right here on abc news, george is returning to "this week," the show where we take a deep dive into politics. nobody better to have at the he helm of "this week." the jobs report is playing a big role in the battle for the white house. the country's unemployment rate dropped to 8.5% in december. we're a long way from prerecession levels. can the economy keep up the positive pace. david kerley has the story from washington. david, everyone is wondering if 2012 will be the year of a turn around. >> reporter: people are asking, is this the spark for a broader recovery? how do we keep this going? thousands of those jobs were added in, believe it or not, manufacturing and health care. even the troubled construction industry. >> we're moving in the right direction. we have made real progress. now is not the time to store. >> reporter: the first thing to keep it going, taxes. the president called for the payroll tax holiday to be extended beyond february. which is all about confidence. consumers need to be confident to spend. and businesses need to be confident there will be the spending before they expand and add jobs. that is what worries some. are these numbers just a blip? or are we now on a roll? which could gain momentum. >> we go through 2012, we'll see businesses become more confident. house holds spend more money. jobses get created. >> reporter: there are stumbling blocks out there. gridlock, the president and congress able to get very little done. we could see a repeat of the debt ceiling battle. then there are the unknowns and uncontrollables. europe may dip into recession. they have the big debt problems to solve. china's economy is slowing. could that slow us, too?
