>> i've got two guns in my hand. is it okay to shoot him if he comes in this door? >> her extraordinary story of survival, right here, this morning. my, my, my. what a way to kick the 2012 election into high gear. the first contest. could you imagine it would be this close? the cover of "the des moines register" says it all. those eight votes was all that separated mitt romney and rick santorum. >> the closest race in iowa. and the largest turnout in iowa history. only eight votes separate them. this was a scramble, robin. they had to wake up one county chairman to get the final precinct. >> what do you mean? >> she had gone home. romney and santorum, followed by ron paul, newt gingrich, rick perry and michele bachmann. the next big contest, the next debate saturday night in new hampshire. newt gingrich is already there. romney and santorum headed there later today. >> rick perry is going home to texas for now. hasn't made a full commitment. says he's going to think things over. our entire political team has been up all night tracking the results and what they mean for the presidential race. let's get right to senior white house correspondent, jake tapper. drinking that red bull. he's been up all night in iowa. good morning, jake. >> reporter: good morning, robin. an unbelievably exciting photo finish. the editors of "the des moines register" originally planned on this front page. split decision. they yelled stop the presses. and changed it to the paper you showed later, romney by eight votes. of course, the split decision is really the message. and that causes some real questions for romney and whether he has a feeling. a weak front-runner. and it provides a huge boost for a previously unknown candidate, rick santorum. rick santorum had two words last night. >> game on. >> reporter: santorum ultimately did not win. but his near upset, almost victory, shocked the political world and made him the latest con serviservative alternative t romney. >> thank you so much, iowa. you have taken the first step of taking back this country. >> reporter: the two-term pennsylvania senator came so close, with hard work. visiting each of iowa's 99 counties. romney won. but the fact this was such a struggle, even with his advantages of money, infrastructure and endorsements, raised questions about an enthusiasm gap. last night, romney delivered a fairly standard stump speech. >> this election is bigger. even than jobs and a strong economy. it's really an election about the soul of america. >> reporter: in third place, buoyed by a surge of independent voters, ron paul. >> let's go back to this real, old-fashioned idea. this very dangerous idea. let's obey the constitution. >> reporter: it was a night that had a bitter taste for some. once the front-runner here, newt gingrich finished fourth. angry about millions of dollars in negative ads against him from romney and romney supporters. >> we are not going to go out and run nasty ads. we're not going to run 30-second -- we're not -- but i do reserve the right to tell the truth. >> reporter: gingrich's first gab comes in the form of this newspaper ad, in "new hampshire's union leader." calling romney a timid massachusetts moderate. and romney has a huge, perhaps insurmountable lead in new hampshire. latest polling shows he has 47% of the vote. the next-closest is ron paul, with 17%. 30 points back. and mitt romney's going to have a big endorsement today. john mccain, the man who beat him in the new hampshire primary four years ago, and also won the new hampshire primary in 2000. a big new hampshire endorsement. george? >> thanks, jake. we turn, now, to the winner of the iowa caucuses. mitt romney joins us from des moines this morning. governor, congratulations. i guess every vote counts, right? >> that's true. there's a real boost coming out of iowa. not just for me. but also for rick santorum and ron paul. >> what does it say about your candidacy? you won fewer votes than you did in 2008. and you had rick santorum to a draw, even though you outspent him 50-1 in television ads. >> this was a seven-person field. you can't do in a field of seven that you can in a smaller field. and i also ran a national campaign. rick has focused his effort, i think in a wise way, entirely in iowa. i've been campaigning in other states. putting together the kind of organization that i believe will get me the 1,150 delegates i need. i'm going to take every win i can possibly get. and get every delegate i can possibly get. >> is rick santorum your prime opponent now? and why should republican voters choose you over him? >> i don't know who the other finalist will be. i hope i'm one of two finalists. at this stage, it looks like it's rick santorum. and we have very different backgrounds. i spent my life, the first 20 years, in the private sector. i know a great deal about jobs are created. how they come and how they go. and i think rick has spent most of his life in the governmental sector. nothing wrong with that experience. but it's very different, i think, if you want to get the economy going again. >> meantime, newt gingrich is really coming after you, governor. i'm sure you know. yesterday, he called you a liar, saying you know more about the superpack ads than you're letting on. and also said you're a massachusetts moderate. he said you're going to be greeted by "the manchester union leader." only a bold reagan con serserva can beat president obama. >> i look forward to seeing him in the states ahead. look, i have pretty broad shoulders. i know the attacks are going to come. they're going to be coming more fast and furious now. nair going to come from the dnc, as well as the president and the white house. as well as my rivals in the republican contest. if you can't handle the heat now, you can't handle the heat down the road. >> he's calling you a liar. is that out of bounds? >> it es heated rhetoric. and i think he's angry, disappointed. i mean, he was leading in the polls here by a pretty wide margin. and one of the things i feel good about is having come from way behind, just a few weeks ago, to come to a point where we're in a virtual tie for the finish. >> looking at the bigger picture in the republican primaries now. it seems you're winning the minds of republican voters, but not their hearts. those that want to beat obama go to you. but those looking for a true conservative or a strong moral leader are looking elsewhere. how do you fix that? >> i think people have to hear me more and more. see my record as a massachusetts governor. and remember, that i ran four years ago. we got beaten by a strong campaigner, in john mccain. but you know, i'll just have to get my message across the country. i think people who understand that i will restore to this country, its fundamental principles and people are and opportunity, are being drawn to my campaign. by the way, the crowds here in iowa were large and enthusia enthusiastic. >> you did get fewer votes than four years ago. i wonder if you look at the general election ahead with president obama, as you try to appeal to the republican voters looking for a true conservative, are you worried that you might turn off those moderates and independent voters you'll need in a general election if you do, indeed, get the nomination? those independent voters last night went heavily to ron paul. >> i actually think, george, that if you're in a race like this, you express your views on the issues and talk about your vision for the country. and you really don't try and figure out which group you're trying to appeal to. i wrote a book a couple of years ago and laid out my vision for the country. i'm not going to sway to the left or right of that. i'm going to talk about the things i believe. hopefully, that will lead me to a victory. if it doesn't, i can live with that. >> are you going to stand by your statement the other day. do you plan on winning the nomination? >> i plan on winning the nomination. if my team does a good job, we ought to be able to post up pretty well against president obama down the road. >> governor romney, thank you very much. we'll see you saturday in new hampshire. >> thanks, george. good to be with you. let's look at the big picture now with analysis from matt dowd. i want to look at the exit polls, which gives some insight into that hard-line dilemma with mitt romney. he got trampled in the conservative votes last night. losing to rick santorum, 35-14. but looking at the voters who want to beat president obama, he wins big. is this tie last night a close win for mitt romney, good news or bad news for his staying power? >> i think it's really telling. and it tells the story of the entire race. voters have been looking for a candidate that's conservative and competent and electable. they kind find one that's both. mitt romney looks very electable. but many voters, conservatives, don't think he's authentic. as other candidates have risen to capture that, they've gone for those attributes. voters are looking for somebody. and maybe rick santorum is it. >> he came out of nowhere. visited every county in iowa. all 99 counties. but he doesn't have a lot of money yet. doesn't have a big organization. at least the romney team has thought that he really can't go the distance. >> that's an interesting thing. you can rise in this race, interestingly, without a lot of money and without doing a lot of resources. but can you stay in this race? and none of the other candidates, the other five, michele bachmann, rick perry, herman cain, have risen but don't have staying power. that will be the test for rick santorum. can he have staying power? >> meanwhile, what does this mean for the general election? they're banking on, the obama campaign, is a long, bloody fight, for the republican nomination. >> the person will be beat up by the time they make it to the general election. but what happens -- we don't know what happens with rick perry. he's going to go home and assess. >> i think i pretty much do know. >> he hasn't officially said it. when he and herman cain hasn't endorse anybody. michele bachmann did not have the showing in iowa. when she's candidates start dropping out, who does it help? >> that's interesting. i think the quicker the field whittles, it's tougher for romney. if the candidates, rick perry, michele bachmann, then, it's a problem. some of those could go to rick santorum or newt gingrich. the smaller the field it gets the quicker it gets, is more problematic for romney. >> you have newt gingrich out there firing at him every day. i'm sure we'll see a lot more of that in the debate saturday night. >> i know. we've been talking about iowa so long. now, we have new hampshire and moving forward. you're going to be there. >> we'll be there saturday night and sunday morning on "this week," as well. >> you're going to be very busy this week. >> exciting time. >> it really is. especially with last night. let's get the other developing stories right now with josh elliott. >> good morning to you. captivating stuff last night. we begin with news headlines. with that four-day manhunt across state lines for a couple that's been called a modern-day bonnie and clyde. logan mcfarland and angela atwood finally were stopped. police say the couple stole a car in utah, murdered this husband and wife and shot a woman during a carjacking during their crime spree. the man wanted for the arson attacks in los angeles, is due in court today. harry burkhart apparently snapped last week, when court records show he went into an anti-american tirade, when his german mother was in court for fraud. a new threat from iran. a threat that's pushing oil and gas prices higher. iran is warning the u.s. military to stay out of the persian gulf. oil prices rose to nearly $103 per barrel, just as gas prices rose another nickel last week. we could see an average of $3.40 per gallon by mid month. >> no secret that president obama is a basketball junkie. apparently he's also serious about his beach volleyball. take a look, courtesy of tmz. snapped on new year's day, at the marine corps base in hawaii. showing the president, playing some catch. playing a game. and then, take a look. it was a diving catch in the sand, as well. pretty good moves for any fit 50-year-old. look at that. much less a president. and when he does re-enter the private sector, perhaps he reenters on sundays. what do you say? >> they can use him. >> maybe. >> perhaps. >> somebody's going to pay for getting that shirtless shot. >> don't you know. >> a little bit of trouble. now, for the freezing temperatures in much of the east coast right now. the big chill, reaching all the way down to florida, where record lows are being broken. abc's matt gutman is in central florida for us this morning. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, robin. from a very frigid central florida. you could call this citrus country here. plant city, florida. gauges reach about 28 degrees and it's still going down. dangerous for citrus country and the orange groves here. and records being broken across the state. and it's causing havoc all over the country. from michigan to new york, to kentucky, up to 17 inches of snow triggered chain-reaction crashes. paralyzing vast sections of highways. >> two cars crashed to the side of us. and then, an 18-wheeler was coming down beside it. >> reporter: on interstate 81 in virginia, this pileup left a mash of 18-wheelers and cars. north carolina roads turned from scenic to scary. >> yesterday, i was on the mountain. today, i'm here in a freezing blizzard. >> reporter: in florida, record lows breaking across the state this morning. in a normally balmy miami, deadly cold. forcing homeless into shelters. the cold icy tentacles threatens the citrus industry and could send o.j. prices higher. farmers try to cover and insulate everything. and they're racing to bring 9,000 butterflies in from the cold. and thawing macaws and reptiles with heat lamps. as animals brace themselves, so is the entire east coast, for the coldest blast of the season. too much cold can kill the oranges. but a little bit of cold actually makes them even sweeter. that tastes pretty good. robin? >> and looks delicious. all right, matt. thank you. >> i want one of those. >> i know. i was thinking the same thing. let's get outside to abc news meteorologist, ginger zee, in for sam champion. you look mighty cold out there, ginger. >> let me tell you something. do not wear a dress without leg warmers today. that's my advice for everyone. this is the type of cold that makes you say, why? when you step out the door. let's talk about the record lows that were already broken in parts of florida. gainesville made it down to 20. maples broke a record, too. they made it down to 37. it's not just cold in florida. look at the windchills this morning. saranack lake, new york. 14 below. it was 26 below an hour ago. i'll leave you with the outlook. pop upn is about to the horizon at the beach where it is only 16 degrees. 18 degrees at reagan national and 10 degrees in winchester. the breeze makes it feel like a much wind.ts but not to midnly in the low late day snow flurries possible. >> los angeles, denver, dallas, all going to see near-record heat. we'll be talking about that in just a little bit. back to robin and george. >> let's get on a plane. we're going to california. california women going head-to-head with one of the world's largest carmakers. she says that honda failed to deliver on high mileage. and now, she's suing for $10,000. abc's dan harris has the story. >> reporter: we've all heard of "the people's court." but this woman from california is giving the term a whole new meaning. fighting for evalpower over one of the mightiest corporations on earth. when heather peters bought this honda hybrid in 2006, the sign in the dealership said it got 50 miles a gallon. but in reality, she says it only gets 30 miles a gallon. >> it went from 50, to 40, to 30. now, is in the 20s. >> reporter: on tuesday, 24 lawyer went head-to-head in small claims court with a representative from honda. who argues the small print on the labor clearly stated the mileage is going to vary. >> it's going to be difficult, unless you drive like the e.p.s. does. >> reporter: honda says the fuel estimates that were used for the civic hybrid were generated in strict compliance with federal regulation. this morning, the judge is still weighing his decision. if the people who also bought a hybrid civic follow her lead, it could cost honda $2 billion. >> if individuals with enough time decide i'm going to start suing a big company, that could be a big problem for a lot of major corporations. >> this is about consumers versus honda. this is about consumers versus corporations. >> reporter: for "good morning america," dan harris, abc news, new york. >> it would be huge if she won that. >> $2 billion hit. we'll be watching that closely. coming up on "gma," the latest on the growing murder probe at the queen's estate. police scrambling to figure out who the young woman was found so close to where the royals went hunting. and the unbelievable 911 call in a home invasion drama. and rob lowe's going to join us live. look at that. he's playing drew peterson.
