will the housing market get better? some clear answers to the best of our ability coming up. high-tech, cool gadgets on the way. we have got a first look at leaked video of the much anticipated google phone. it's supposed to challenge the iphone. rumors that apple will introduce a tablet computer. >> more things we feel forced to buy. >> that's right. we begin this morning with yemen. the united states embassy there is closed this morning. the u.s. embassy. u.s. officials say they shut it down in response to ongoing threats from al qaeda. rachel martin has more. >> reporter: that's right. the state department taking no chances, telling employees to stay home. petraeuss' surprise visit was short and to the point. he told the yemeni president he could count on the uted states to support their efforts. the u.s. will double its aid to yemen's anti-terror efforts. petraeus met with u.s. special forces soldiers. training yemeni troops in counterterrorism. >> we've permitted the development of al qaeda there that is vibrant, widespread, and lethal. >> reporter: places christmas day bomber farouk abdulmutallab might have visited. president obama said this weekend that fighting terrorism in yemen requires partnership. >> i've made it a priority to strengthen our partnership with the yemeni government. working with them to strike al qaeda terrorists. >> reporter: two weeks ago, two attacks were launched on suspected al qaeda bases in the country using sea and air-based cruise missiles. the u.s. has a history of using unmanneded drones in target terrorists in the region. experts say fighting terrorism on the arabian peninsula will require more than force. >> we'll need improved relation with the nations. not just based on aid or military strikes. they will have to be based on socioeconomic development. that's a risk we have to take where the aid will end up. >> reporter: this terrorism expert says the best option, use force, a lot of it, and then get out. >> the reality of using military power against this enemy is that you have to use it whenever you can. once you use it, don't stick around. >> reporter: intelligence analysts say that al qaeda is using yemen to try to lure the u.s. into a ground offensive in the middle east. the obama administration would like very much to avoid that. >> all you have to do is look at the map to see why this is a complicated place. it's right across the water from somalia. it's the poorest arab country in the world. nearly 50% of the population is unemployed. and 50% under the age of 20. there's a civil war in the north and a secession movement down south. yemen has a special place in the history of al qaeda. osama bin laden's father was born there. it was the scene of the 2000 bombing of the "u.s.s. cole." in which 17 american sailors died. terrorists are seeking safe haven there. the alled christmas day plane bomber was armed and trained in yemen. with more on the fallout on that, here's abc's yunji de nies. who is with the president in hawaii this morning. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, dan. the president is leaving hawaii later today. he's leaving a day early because aides say he has a lot on his plate. he wants to get straight bac to work. the first thing on his agenda? he has to meet with the agency heads to figure out with what went wrong. he's linked the suspect to al qaeda. in a rare move yesterday, the director of the national counterterrorism center issued a statement that officials know with absolute certainty that al qaeda and those who support its ideology continue to refine their methods to test our defenses and pursue an attack on the homeland. with so many accusation of an intelligence failure, the president wants a much more comprehensive review in the coming days. the white house tells us that the president questioned a briefing on terror threats around the holidays. he was given one on december 22nd. three days before the attempted attack on flight 253. that briefing did not contain warnings about any specific threats. >> let's get the bottom line on the administration and the threat. "nightline" anchor terry moran has been following this. he's filling in for george stephanopoulos this week on "this week." some sober statements. what do you expect the president will be hearing on tuesday with his top advisers? >> he's going to be hearing who was responsible for the intelligence failure and where the system failed. that's what he's demanded. he's said he will insist on accountability at every level. it's cle that the political pressure he's under as well as his own determination to get to the bottom of this, he's going to want fixes done fast. it looks like what happened here was not as much the problem of 9/11 where agencies were not sharing information. not even a problem of not connecting the dots, though clearly they were not connected. it was the judgment about the information as it came in. to the disparate parts of the intelligence community. at the end of the day, that's a hard problem to reform. how do you make sure that people have good judgment about what they're getting in this bunch of intelligence information? >> and the criticism always aimed at the top. the president just coming back from hawaii. he said we will not rest until we make sure america is safe. he was resting in hawaii. he was on vacation. is he sure to face a political fire storm when he gets back? >> he sure is. the presidency always follows the president. no matter on vacation or otherwise. you are right. this has been one of those moments that while the president has been on the golf course that republicans have come after him hard on what the republican party believes could be a democratic party vulnerability. there used to be a tradition of s solidarity for and refraining from criticizing the president when the country is under attack. there's no such tradition right now. former vice president cheney just blasting president obama and several leaders in congress doing the same. he's going to have to take charge of the situation, especially after the performance of janet napolitano last week. he will face a political battle over national security heading into the next year. >> any indication he might change up the team given what happened over christmas day? >> he's insisting on accountability. he clearly has secretary napolitano's back. inhe statement he gave over the course of the week, he said, she was right in saying that after the bomber was subdued, the system worked. in other words, flights in the air, 160 flights in the air were notified of the issue. mores were measurers were taken to toughen security at the gates. it seems that he's trying to protect her from the long naives in washington, d.c., that are already out for her. >> thank you, terry. he'll be talking to john brennan, joe lieberman and others this morning on "this week." >> we're going to be hearing a lot about yemen. >> that's right. now a look at the headlines. the massive search for a florida man accused of shooting four family members to death on thanksgiving day is over. this, after a viewer of "america's most wanted" called in a tip. abc's todd connor has the latest. >> reporter: police arrested 35-year-old michael paul merhige. late saturday night. only an hour after the show "america's most wanted" profiled him for a fourth time. they believe he checked into a small hotel using a fake name about a week after the massacre. >> there was one entrance to the room. law enforcement officers made entry and found him inside. >> reporter: police say he was tasered and captured. as recently as even this weekend, volunteers and a relative handed out flyers in hopes that someone would recognize him and he would turn himself in. >> you have ruined your parents' lives. give yourself up, put an end to your misery. >> reporter: the arrest ends a five-week search. it was on thanksgiving night, shortly after sharing dinner with 16 relatives in florida that he allegedly shot and killed his pregnant sister and her twin, an aunt and a young cousin. >> he shot multiple people. i think he shot my 6-year-old daughter. >> we're on the way. >> shortly after the shootings, jim talked about how he tried to rescue his daughter. >> i heard, pow, pow, pow. that's it. i came in the front door, he was gone, she was dead. >> reporter: her parents say they've been looking over their shoulders. fearing merhige would strike again. >> we can give them peace, let them get on with the healing process. >> reporter: for "good morning america," todd connor. amajor drug arrest in mexico. alleged drug kingpin, carlos beltran leyva has been arrested. another brother is still at large and listed as one of mexico's most wanted drug lords. washington wizards star basketball player gilbert arenas says it was quote bad judgment to have kept guns in the team locker room. he denied gambling reports and reports that he and another player pulled guns on each other. potato competition.te couch at some espn zones around the country. competitors have to sit in a chair watching sports without getting up. they started friday morning and get a short bathroom break every eight hours. if you snooze, you lose. if you win in chicago, you get a big screen tv and a recliner. >> well, that's appropriate. >> spend the rest of your life sitting there watching tv. >> they're still going? now to the economy. i think everyone can agree. 2009 was not such a great year. what can we expect in 2010? more jobs? a better housing market? a bullish stock market? we're joined by diane swonk this morning. good morning. >> good morning. >> obviously predictions are tough. they don't call economics the dismal science for nothing. let's start with jobs. everybody is perhaps most interested in that. when will we see a rebound and wher jobs growth maybe next week.ve the first half of 2010, jobs will be buoyed. by the 2010 census hiring. about 1 million workers will be put on the payrolls temporarily. that's bit of a head fake. it is better to have people on $20 an hour jobs than unemployment insurance. >> what areas of growth for >> technology. it will be a really big area for true growth. we'll see some medical. some services will come back as we. that's been a hard hit area. as we rebuild the financial sector, that area will come back, too. technology, we're on the edge of a whole new technological revolution here. >> housing. some people say the root of our current problems. the housing market forecast, how does it look? >> we're going to continue to see a rebound, supported heavily by the first-time buyer tax credit and the intervention that the federal reserve is doing to keep the rates down. it's unfortunate that we need that much help. to support the housing market. the problem, is the head winds we face with foreclosures. the activity will pick up. prices will bottom, but not appreciate a lot by the end of the year. we would like to see firming in prices. that will help people trying to sell a house and lenders trying to lend on that mortgage as well. >> 2009 was a good year for the stock market. do you feel optimistic for 2010? >> i do. we still have a lot of profits. often off the skin of main street, wages have been cut during this. you're working harder for less money. we all know that. even as firms come back, the economy is coming back. firms are not giving the raises. profit margins will continue to be fairly wide. we could easily see about 10% profit gains. about 5% at least, or more, on the stock market. you'll still do better in stocks than bonds. it's going to be a volatile year. >> a lot of us feel like we're in a recession even though technically people say it's over. when do you think we'll start to feel like the economy is truly in recovery? >> i think it will be far into 2010, maybe even 2011. i wish it was sooner than that. i hope i'm wrong. the initial phases of recovery, the discouraged workers join the labor force. we have college grads that can't get jobs. they keep coming in. we'll have people trying to apply for a job, the lines getting longer initially. through the first or second half of 2010 where the line in front of the them is getting longer for the same jobs. even though the number of jobs picks up. i guess it will be a long, hard slog. i gitsz is with why i'm still black and blue. >> diane, thank you very much. she mentioned a tech revolution. google and apple generating a lot of buzz right now from techies. the much anticipated google phone. i have the iphone. the anticipated google phone, we think, will be unveiled on tuesday this week. and then the apple tablet. becky worley has the latest gadget gossip. >> iphone right here. >> reporter: we spulate and salivate. we research and whisper. we let our gadgets send us on a quest to unravel the tech secrets. the newest tech secret? plus, check out the stunning peaks here. it looks like the swiss alps. right? nope, it turns out this is idaho. we're going to take you there coming up in our "weekend window." >> but first, ron claiborne with the headlines. good morning, kate and dan. good morning, everyone. the u.s. embassy in yemen has been closed after threats of attack by al qaeda. this country could become a new front on the war on terror. rachel martin has an update. good morning, again, rachel. >> good morning, ron. the state department telling employees in yemen to stay home. we have word that the british embassy in yemen is also closed today. all of this comes a day after general david petraeus travelled to yemen carrying a message from president obama and pledging full u.s. support in the fight against al qaeda in yemen. there are new attacks against al qaeda strongholds in recent days. the yemeni government has pledged to help in looking at the christmas bomber, allegedly trained at terrorist camps in yemen. last year, the u.s. gave yemen $70 million to fight terrorism. this weekend, general petraeus announced that amount will double, more likely than not this year. more than 160 people have been arrested in a cock fighting ring raid in texas. they seized drugs, cash, and more than 100 roosters. child protective services took into custody as many as 15 children, some as young as 7 years of age. rick warren says that donations to his southern california megachurch total $2.4 million. he had asked for donations to meet a $900,000 shortfall. in lorado, dogs can travel in style now. a pet boarding facility bought a hearse and dressed it up as a pet traveler. cheaper than a cab. now to j.c. monahan with the weather. >> we're looking at the warm places in the country. we have to go out west. 78 degrees in los angeles. that's about 10 degrees above average. normally you would be about 68. phoenix, 70. minneapolis, 6 degrees. and a storm backing into the northeast coastline. the winds are the big issue there. >> this weather report has been brought to you by kellogg's special k. kate? >> clearly, the recalls for the most important products in your home, the crib, car seat, >> we went out on the street and talked to parents. they felt like they didn't get the information from companies. one couple said they had a crib that they had no idea had been recalled. >> i think it was common sense. your children should not be playing around a stroller with when you're opening and closing it. i think it's a matter of being cautious and safe. >> okay, that was actually a different sound bite. that is a couple that had the stroller. they're talking about this maclaren stroller that was recalled. >> the company heard reports that 12 children had their fingers stuck, some were pinched, others amputated. they've put out a patch, you put it over this area of the stroller. that's what companies most often do. there are a million of these strollers out there. a lot of parents are saying, oh, i have to be more safe. >> that's common sense thing. you can fix the problem. >> other products. when there are involunteer recalls, the cpsc has said, these are dangerous. >> is that what happened with the cribs? >> yes, the hardware was made of plastic. the crib side was separating. babies were getting stuck and suffocating. four babies suffocated and died. you have to wake up instantly, check the serial number on the crib. don't use it until you get the patch in place. >> should you be wary of any drop-side cribs?
