Surviving Charlie Hebdos employees worked in borrowed offices and today put out their first issue since the attack. In paris, people waited in pretty long lines to get a copy. Three million newspapers sold out before dawn. Two million more are now being printed. Charlie hebdos weekly circulation is around 60,000. Right now theres a copy on display at the newseum. Thats where we find Jeanette Reyes right now. Weve already seen a handful of people stopping by here at the newseum trying to take a look at that cover of the french satirical magazine charlie hebdo. Take a look. This is whats been flying off the shelves over there in paris. Millions of copies sold at this hour. The issue depicts a tearful Prophet Muhammad holding up a sign that says i am charlie. Above it are a defiant title proclaiming all is forgiven. This cover joins 80 other issues on display here but this one makes a powerful statement. We spoke to the editors at the newseum minutes ago and they say their display of the front page is in support of freedom of expression. And last weeks attacks only strengthen their belief that all people should be able to express themselves without fear. People we spoke to felt the same way. Take a listen. I love it. I think its fantastic. Frankly, that attack was horrible and it was despicable. And despicable moment and hurt freedom. I think this is making a statement that what happened in paris and the reaction to what happened in paris is not going to go unnoticed. If youd like to see this cover in person it will be up until tomorrow around 8 30 in the morning when they switch them up with the newest covers for tomorrow. But certainly, you wont be the only one coming out to take a look at that very popular cover this morning. Reporting live Jeanette Reyes abc 7 news. All right jeanette. And as millions of copies of the french satirical magazine just flew off shelves, media organizations are faced with the tough decision. National correspondent examines why youre seeing the controversial image from some news outlets but not others. Its published here in the Huffington Post and on the fox news website and the Washington Post. The decision to show this news organizations are split between freedom of speech and expression and offending religious beliefs of readers and viewers. As for the decision to show this the Washington Post says it avoids publication of material that is pointedly deliberately or needlessly offensive to members of religious groups but that this cartoon doesnt fall into that category. Huffington post said it splashed the cover to support Free Expression in solidarity with their french editors. But some are questioning that decision. Drawing parallels with other types of speech accepted as offensesive in the united states. We all draw red lines and when we draw red lines we dont question that. We dont go and ask an africanamerican, whats the big deal about this n word . We never do that. We accept that yes, it hurts. Many news outlets have decided, in fact the story can be told without showing the image. Nbc news and other networks have made the editorial decision not to show the cover. Cnn cites a long standing policy against showing depictions of the Prophet Muhammad. The question now is will more Media Outlets show images like those published in paris . Or will they maintain their policies to not offend certain religious beliefs . Can they do it . Absolutely. Should they do it . Thats a question that im posing to the american conscience today.
