Our reporter talked to a man who jumped into action. So i tried to open the door and it was burning hot so it burned my hand. As his fingers are blistered as he tells us he woke up to screams of fire and noticed the flames consuming his neighbors condo. I told them i was going to get firefighters. They knew at least one resident was trapped and the man in his 60s described by neighbors as a horder was surrounded by smoke and flames inside his unit where the fire started and firefighters could barely move around inside. His whole back porch was engulfed. The boxes helped fuel and spread fire and the man upstairs knew he and his family only had minutes to get out safely. My niece was upstairs sleeping, got my niece awake and every out and banged on mans doors on the way down and pulled the fire alarm. A firefighter who went in to rescue the man sustained injuries. A few more minutes i think it could have easily spread throughout the building. A handful of residents have been displaced and those in the hospital are expected to survive. This just coming into the abc 7 newsroom, the suspect who allegedly fired at Police Officers after a daylong standoff has decide. Back on october 6th, police attempted to serve a warrant to a man who locked himself in an apartment and eventually fired at police. Police fired back and the suspect eventually died. The incident is continued to be investigated. At this point thousands are dealing with Severe Weather across the country. It caused massive Power Outages and making a mess of the morning commute. This is the same storm that spurred tornadoes in arkansas and missouri yesterday. At least two people were killed. Forecasters say tornadoes remain a threat in several areas in the south today. The massive cloud of black smoke could be seen through the dense fog this morning from interstate 495. When i showed the fire i thought it was about 5 30 in the morning a blaze was coming from an industrial unit in alex andrya. Business owner fran dodd raced over to check on his pie shop. To his relief, it remained untouched. Now according to the Alexandria Fire Department the owner of this printing business was inside when the fire broke out and you can see the damage is pretty extensive and made a huge decision that may have sended up costing him. The owner began to attempt to fight the fire and when it became too much he called 911. Valuable time was wasted and much was lost. A firefighter is in the hospital after sprang his wrist battling the blaze. An investigation into the cause of the fire is under way. Reporting in alexandria, abc 7 news. New information this afternoon about the fire that damaged a waldorf Sporting Goods store, arson is said to be the cause of the fire and its the second case of arson on that block recently.
