Corruption trial. Our Northern Virginia bureau chief Jeff Goldberg has covered this case from the beginning and joins us live from richmond with what mcdonnell is saying there. Certainly an amazing scene is in the courtroom. Not many people expected the governor to take the stand today but he did at about 3 20 this afternoon going until 5 30 when court wrapped up. Toward the end of his testimony he was questioned somewhat about Star Scientific saying his administration did little to help the company. Governor mcdonnell leaving the courthouse met with an absolute crush of cameras. A lot of testimony focusing on the governors biography, talking about his upbringing in the mount vernon section of fairfax county. His time at the university of notre dame and his time in the public sector, the house of delegates and his run for attorney general and run for governor. He spoke about the run for governor and what it was like when he won. November 4, 2009 and he could already sense trouble with his wife maureen saying i could not tell she was as happy as i was. She was yelling at me about something. There was a lot of stress he says about what lay ahead for his wife. A few minutes ago we asked the governor about that testimony. Governor was it difficult . We heard a lot of things said about your wife and we heard some from you. Was this hard for you today . Of course. Were talking about marriage and finances, thats hard for anybody. How about tomorrow . Thats another day on the stand. You ready . Yes. The governor saying he is ready and eager. He also talked a bit about the difficulty of statewide races calling them incredibly taxing on families and an immense sacrifice, puts a strain on the marriage. He talked about his run for attorney general and then governor saying this is a calling i felt i had all my life. He was asked about donors and the process in which that happens. And his playoff. He said if you cant take somebodys money and not vote against their interests the next day, you dont belong in the business. Governor mcdonnell says yes he did take money and gifts from Jonnie Williams but said there was no special treatment to williams in exchange. The defense focusing a bit on that with the direct questioning. We expect to hear a lot about that tomorrow. The interesting part of the trial tomorrow is going to be the crossexamination from the prosecution. We can expect a whole lot of conversation not only about Jonnie Williams and whatever that relationship was, but also of course questions about his marriage and maureen mcdonnell. This is shaping up to probably be the most interesting point of this trial thus far and of course well be here. Live in richmond, Jeff Goldberg, abc7 news. Thanks very much. More american troops, if may be headed to iraq after the murder of a journalist. Isis released a video showing the execution of james foley. That act described as barbaric is prompting a response not only from the United States but from other nations as well. Rebecca cooper is live with next steps. American Fighter Pilots and drone aircraft launched 14 separate airstrikes on isil forces in iraq, ignoring threats that any retribution could lead to a second gruesome act, the beheading of another american. President obama vowed retribution for the horrific beheading of american journalist james foley by Islamic State terrorists. There has to be an effort to extract this cancer so it doesnt spread. We can all agree that a group like isil has no place in the 21st century. Foleys parents today spoke emotionally about their sons work. He was an inspiration for us and for so many others. His love. His determination. His laugh. His smile. Pentagon officials concede even todays increased u. S. Military response is not enough to win back all of the territory taken by isil forces. The executive director of the beirut base, part of the foundation that helped free foley. He joined critics inside the u. S. And overseas who say president obama has not acted swiftly enough in both syria and now iraq. Everything that the United States is thinking of doing is too little too late. The United States allowed president assad from syria to carry on attacks on hundreds of thousands of syrians were killed. It opened the door for the radicalization of the syrian opposition. Theres also been growing criticism of president obama today for continuing his vacation in marthas vineyard. David cameron cut short his vacation to deal with the growing isil threat. Rebecca cooper, abc7 news. Some American Allies in europe are stepping into this somewhat, the action against isil. Germany said spy Kurdish Forces with military weapons. We turn to some more developing news in virginia tonight where samesex marriage is again on hold. The stay order from the Supreme Court came just hours before samesex couples could have married. Kendis gibson joins us now with reaction to this news. Alison, this is one of the marriage licenses that were drawn up overnight by county clerks in anticipation that virginia would become the First Southern state to legalize gay marriages. A Supreme Court ruling came so late in the day that many started to believe history would have been been made tomorrow. Alexandria residents duane and rodney burnm tied the not in puerto rico two years ago and they planned on making it official tomorrow morning at their county Clerks Office in virginia. The Supreme Court late ruling on gay marriage caught them and many others by surprise. Were you surprise would you heard . When you heard . I was especially after doma. The ruling by the high court came so late many county clerk offices had started plans for dozens of nuptial tomorrow and even started to change marriage licenses to reflect spouses instead of bride and groom. For me its okay because you know, nobody [ indiscernible ] for that because the same people. Everybody the same people. Just as roberts granted the stay on gay marriages today, the issue will likely head back to the Supreme Court by next spring for all the justices to rule on. Im not happy because i dont believe in two sets of marriage. Virginia is the 20th state where gay marriage bans were challenged and turned over by lower courts. The issue has moved so quickly many expect the justices to hear oral arguments by october and have a decision by next february or march. Writing in a statement, i hope the Supreme Court takes immediate action so that virginia can finally take this next important step in our history. Coming up on abc7 news at 6 00, the d. C.
