richard is live with new information on the investigation. what can you tell us? >> police tell us the shooting happened here on this sidewalk. we're told the victim fell into this area between 2:00 cars in this parking lot. now, authorities are trying to get more information out of the victim. he is undergoing surgery right now, and residents here extra cautious in the wake of this rare shooting in arlington. >> other than a piece of crime scene tape -- >> it is a little scary that that would happen. >> there are no signs of the gunfire that left a man critically wounded here on second road north. >> our friends heard gunshots and they said the man said a few words and then just shot the person. >> police say around 7:50 friday evening, a latino man was sitting in his car when he was approached by a ski masked gunman. >> apparently they said three shots but we didn't hear three shots. >> there are gangs that hang out around here. >> detectives say the shooter ran off in the direction of arlington boulevard. police used tracking doors and uniformed officers to comb the neighborhood and they will maintain a visible presence tonight. >> that requires beefing up a little bit of presence until we can track this individual down. >> it's been nearly two years since arlington has seen this kind of violence. 20-year-old kane estrada was fatally stabbed on pershing drive in march 2010 about a mile from here, and residents say they will be cautious. >> i will never go out without my husband at night at dark. that's definitely something i will do and just watch out. >> now, police have only a vague description of the shooter. we're told he was wearing a black ski mask and black clothing about 5' 8" tall. so far, no word on a motive why this happened. witnesses have told thaws the two men were talking briefly before the gunfire rang out. if you have any information, you're asked to call arlington county police. abc 7 news. >> richard, thanks for the late nest arlington. turning to the district now, police there are investigating the stabbing of a man inside a club at adams morgan at club camalie and police say it occurred after a fight over one person stepping on another's foot inside the club. the victim suffered non- life-threatening injuries and police say they very identified the suspects >> let's get to the race for the white house. several presidential caucuses and primaries were held today. >> one of the big ones is kansas, which has already been called. late today, rick santorum was declared the winner with 30 points separating himself from mitt romney, but this victory is not a huge surprise since romney chose not to campaign in this state. david reports from the campaign trail. >> thank you. >> rick santorum was campaigning in missouri today, but his eyes were on kansas. republicans voted in state caucuses with 40 delegates at stake. santorum took the lion's share. >> we've had a very good day in our neighboring state of kansas. we are going to win kansas and the advanced majority of delegates from kansas! >> mitt romney took a breather from the campaign trail saturday after picking up 18 delegates overnight in guam, adding to his wide lead. romney, not expected to do well in the south, has been encouraged by the latest polling in alabama and mississippi, which hold important primaries tuesday. >> morning, y'all, i got started right this morning with a biscuit and cheesy grits, i will tell you, delicious. >> if rom can win a southern state from his more conservative rivals, that would burnish electability factors. for newt gingrich who says the native south is his path to victory, a poor showing could make tuesday his last stand. he's short on money and resisting calls to drop oust race. >> if we can win alabama and mississippi tuesday night, we will reset the campaign for the ninth or tenth time. >> but romney is the one who might actually reset the race if he's able to win in the south. david curly, abc news, washington. >> and we should also point out that mitt romney is ahead in the wyoming caucuses. the final results have not been announced yet. >> all right. turning now to the weight, much cooler today and temperatures are dropping but we are in for another warmup. we turn to steve. does the trend continue? 1800 block of upshirr street. two suspects held the elderly homeowner and his grandson at gunpoint before taking off in his car. mike. >> the homeowner had just returned home from dropping his wife off at a dialysis center as he has done every weekend for the past few years. as he arrived home, he could have never imagined what would happen next. >> i pulled my car into the driveway, and as i was getting out, two young men came with guns and told me to drop to my knees. >> russell sim summons says it was around 6:15 a.m., and the sun was shining on this quiet residential neighborhood when two suspects wearing dark clothes and ski masks took his car keys and ordered him to open his house. his 14-year-old grandson was inside but simmons decided not to fight back. >> they had two big guns and they were young, and mostly for my grandson. i could not take a chance. >> the suspects forced him and his grandson into this bathroom and systematically moved through the house stealing hundreds
