Roommate. D. C. Bureau chief sam ford was in court when johnson appeared today. Hes live in northwest with a look at what happened there. Sam . Sam alison attorney messerschmitt was robbed and murdered on february 9th. According to prosecutors today, Dominique Johnson was using his metro smart trip fare card from then until they arrested her yesterday. She was arraigned this afternoon on charges of conspiracy to commit robbery and then released with an ankle bracelet. 19yearold Dominique Johnson is accused of planning a robbery with her roommate, 21yearold jamyra gallmon. But not the murder of the d. C. Lawyer david messerschmitt. Authorities say he thought he was arranging a craigs list date with a man and gallmon seen here on Surveillance Video showed up at the Donovan Hotel and ended up stabbing the 30yearold lawyer to death and robbing him of 40 and a metro fare card. She said he grabbed her and she snapped. The lawyer for johnson released this afternoon wearing a g. P. S. Ankle bracelet spoke up for his client. This is not the first time nor the last time that youve all seen either a Family Member or significant other of somebody who is accused of the crime charged in conjunction with that. And why the prosecution would choose to do that. Sam according to court papers when police first questioned the roommate johnson, she denied knowing anything about the robbery until they told her they had video from the c. V. S. They planned the robbery for a month before it happened, court papers said. The lawyer said that johnson had no previous criminal history. She is due back in court in may. Reporting live d. C. Superior court, sam ford, abc 7 news. Alison thank you. The 7 on your side iteam has uncovered stunning new details. This is about the contractor involved in last weeks prisoner escape at Inova Fairfax hospital. Leon thats right, Wossen Assaye was captured later that day. What the iteam discovered raises serious questions about the company that was guarding assaye. Joce sterman here to explain. Joce . Joce after that escape we wanted answers from the company paid by your tax dollars to guard prisoners. We ended up though with more questions after discovering two of the three men advertised as leaders of allied protection tell us they have no actual ties to that company. As Police Officers combed fairfax last tuesday for a missing prisoner escaped from governor contracted guards we went searching for answers about the company that employs them. Received a phone call from somebody from your station asking me about it. Reporter 2,000 miles in california reached by face time Kevin Lachapelle was surprised to hear from the 7 on your side iteam. When she began sharing with me what the biography said i knew that was me. Joce we caught images of his full biography on the website for allied protection services. Calling him the director of education and training for the company contracted by the u. S. Marshals. Theres even an email address. The only problem is he says hes never worked there. Never received any compensation from them. Never been employed by them. Never contracted. Nothing whatsoever. Joce he had no idea allied protection had apparently been trading on his good name for years. And hes not the only one. Ronnie pascal listed on allieds website as the director of operations has told 7 on your side hes got no ties to the company. After both say they threatened legal action last week and demanded their information be removed, allieds website which had been up since 2006 disappeared. I wanted to send letters to any Government Agency that they may be providing work for, making sure that they know that this is incorrect information. Joce the 7 on your side iteam found two contracts for more than 2 million were awarded to the company last year by the u. S. Marshals service including one that put their guards in charge at Inova Fairfax hospital. My concern is hoping that whatever agency is overseeing them gives a closer look to find out and make sure that things are being done properly because it was very troubling. Joce and i just talked with u. S. Marshals service about 15 minutes ago asking about how they got that contract bid. The agency says its review before the contract was handed out showed allied was a responsible contractor. The rep cannot say at this moment whether what weve uncovered here will prompt another look at that contract and the bid. Leon what is the president or the owner of this company have to say to the company and for himself in all of this . Joce it took us a while to track him down. We tried three different email addresses for a solid week to reach him. Today, we got him on his cell phone. Leon brooks was the owner. He hung up on him. First, he did say what we saw was a test website even though its been on line since 2006 and any mistakes made were done without any malice. Leon some story. Good job getting on that. Stay on it ok . Joce sterman, nice work again. Now, Wossen Assaye was initially arrested march 20th and charged with robbing a bank in alexandria. They think hes behind a dozen Bank Robberies over the last year. Hes facing federal charges as well. Hes not due back in court for any specific date at this time as prosecutors are presenting their evidence to a grand jury. Alison . Alison moving on to this now about the washington nationals. They are now taking on a team of just three players. Former ushers make up that trio claiming the team violated their civil rights and the Civil Rights Act when it fired them. Only on 7, the three men spoke with Stephen Tschida about what they filed as a religious discrimination suit. Stephen on opening day, they flocked to nats park. But three friends, huge nats fans and former ushers here headed to their Attorneys Office instead. I loved it. I loved meeting people. Stephen during the 20122013 seasons, they worked as ushers. Three retired federal workers. But also devout seventh day adventists. It was required not to work between sunset friday and sunset saturday. Stephen they say the team accommodated them and allowed them to take friday nights and saturday days off. At the end of the 2013 season the team fired them. It implemented a new rule requiring ushers to work 80 of games. Not possible when you dont work friday nights or saturdays. We got a letter saying we would not be able to return because we did not reach the 80 rule. Stephen theyre suing for lost wages and punitive damages. They hope the team coughs up the cash and gives them their jobs back. As far as i know, we have religious rights in america. Theres a lot more at the ballpark than just a baseball game and i enjoyed that. Stephen we contacted the nationals to try to get reaction to this lawsuit. We received an email stating that generally, the team does not respond to active litigation matters. Stephen tschida, abc 7 news. Alison now an update on a virginia driver who was charged more than 10,000 in violations related to tolls on the 495 express lanes. A Fairfax County judge ruled tony cooley of fredricksburg will not have to pay the fines. The judge says that the toll operators, transurban waited too long to sue to collect those unpaid fees. Cooley was charged more than 10,000 in 2012 for 11 unpaid trips in the hot lanes because she had not properly set up her e. Z. Pass device. She wrote a check for the tolls but wouldnt pay the fines. And now, a year and a half, cooley won her court appeal. I was crying i was so excited and happy its done. Im ready to move on with my life and get things going. The thing is for me this isnt about me. Its about everywhere else thats been affected by this. Alison in just the last halfhour, transurban told abc 7 news it plans to adjust its procedures in order to continue to pursue unpaid toll violators in line with the courts ruling. Leon coming up at 5 00 hopefully were able to muddle through it to prevent a cyber event from taking place. Leon protecting our cyberspace. Military facility for us all in our backyard. Alison a recall of a popular food. What you need to know and look for on packages of hummus. Leon find out where you can see some bald eagles here. Reporter a man suspected of robbing banks in arlington, alexandria and d. C. Is now behind bars. But you may not believe how he came into police custody. Im Jeff Goldberg. People we spoke with couldnt believe it. Leon new at 5 00 every girl may be crazy about a sharp dressed man. The Police Department not so much. Particularly one who dresses up before robbing a bank. Northern Virginia Bureau chief Jeff Goldberg is live in arlington with how officers were able to detain a dapper bandit. Hey, jeff. Jeff hey, leon. This is certainly an interesting one. The suspect lives here in the courthouse section of arlington. In fact right behind that big building there. And like a lot of people who live in this neighborhood, he uses 14th street as a cutthrough to get to wilson boulevard and the metro. Anything like that. However, police say that he did not seem to mind to consistently walk right past Police Headquarters. Many words can describe the story of sunny peret and none are very flattering. Complacency, stupidity. Jeff it starts with a bank robbery at the president ial bank in ballston last november. Police say peret wearing a three piece suit hands the teller a note and he gets the money and takes off. Domingo lives above the bank and remembers the commotion after the crime. Now, he cant believe how peret got caught. Its kind of crazy. Hes not afraid doing that kind of thing. Jeff according to arlington police, peret who lives just blocks from Police Headquarters would often walk right past the station during his daily routine even with his face plastered on f. B. I. Wanted posters. Thats pretty bold jeff an alert officer made the connection a few months ago putting the suspect in their sights. Detectives gathered another evidence to make an arrest ending his time as a fugitive not on the run. Probably got complacent and figured that you know we werent following through on the investigation. Because that guy is like that and hes in the right place right now. Jeff and police say that peret is the primary suspect in two other Bank Robberies in alexandria and d. C. He was arrested last night at his home without any resistance. He currently remains in the Arlington County jail. Live in arlington, Jeff Goldberg, abc 7 news. Alison thank you. We are watching a developing story tonight as the national Highway SafetyTraffic Administration decides whether to reopen an investigation into the gas tanks of some jeeps. 7 on your side consumer investigator kimberly suteritsuiters is in the newsroom with the reason why. Kimberly . Kimberly exploding gas tanks in rear end crashes. 75 people have died in accidents like this one. And it would be something of an unusual move for them to reopen this investigation. In fact two years ago, the jeep manufacturer recalled 1 1 2 million Jeep Grand Cherokees and liberties. Their fix, to protect the gas tanks by installing a trailer hitch. But by the end of 2014 only 3 of jeeps had that repair. The head of the Government Agency says hes unhappy with that slow pace. His comments coming a week after a georgia jury awarded 150 million to the family of a 4yearold boy who was killed when their Jeep Grand Cherokee exploded into flames after being rear ended. Chrysler defending the jeep as being safe as similar vehicles built at the same time. Were talking 1992 to 1998 for grand cherokees. Even with the fix, theres critics who say its inadequate for crashes over 40 miles an hour. They claim some jeeps in rear impact crashes that then exploded and caught fire already had that trailer hitch installed. Live in the newsroom kimberly suiters, abc 7 news. Leon thanks kimberly. Tonight, a careful eye on the weather in the midwest. The National Weather service is on the ground right now in missouri for damage from a potential tornado. Now, heres what it looked like there right now after powerful storms ripped through the area. Streets are still flooded and businesses are cleaning up after roofing was ripped off and windows were busted. Today, people from illinois to texas are bracing for even more Severe Weather. Doug there are multiple tornado watches in effect west of the mountains and appalachians midwest and central plains. Pretty violent. Set up very warm and very humid. Very powerful cold front approaching. Thats the reason why for the violent weather. Theres a slight chance we could have Severe Weather tomorrow. Damaging winds, large hail and stuff like that. Alison in the afternoon tomorrow. Doug probably between 3 00 and 6 00 is the best estimate now. This is what we have a look outside. Its blah but quietly blah. Its cloudy and damp. Cool obviously, but no rain right now but i think as that warm front off to the west starts to get closer to the area, then well see some rain tonight and then tomorrow it is a whole new ballgame. All right. Now, whats going to happen specifically this evening . I think for the next few hours, well pretty much hold with what we have weatherwise and temperaturewise. Upper 40s to about 50. Temperatures may drop a degree or two this evening. I think theyll level off and may start rising overnight as warm air starts to move in from the west. Theres a lot of warm air arnold. We have warm air to the south and warm air to the west. Watch how it curves around right here. Just on the other side of the appalachians in allegheny. 84 in charleston. 77 degrees in raleigh. Only 47 in norfolk. Wedge of cold air locked in place. Really cold in boston where its 37. All this will start getting pushed out of the way as the warm air moves in from well showers. Tomorrow, we break out in the warm sector totally here. On the satellite and radar loop, you can see some breaks in the overcast and also see a number of showers and storms developing and again, some severe especially over portions of ohio and even into west virginia. As we get through the day tomorrow, the winds will pick up, temperatures will rise. From the 60s 70s and possibly the 80s with some sunshine tomorrow. These are all severe thunderstorm watch areas. Same in the pink out there and this is all in yellow. A tornado watch. Inside those watches, there are individual warnings for tornadoes and for severe thunderstorms. As the front moves in towards us tomorrow afternoon, the real determining factor here will be once the warm front gets out of the way and the cold front takes its place, its how much sunshine develops around the area. For now, there is a slight risk in this whole shaded yellow area east of the blue ridge including our entire area here over the bay, slight risk of severe thormentz. And they could have damaging winds. They could have large hail in any of those that develop. Dont know yet if thats actually going to happen or get the garden variety of storms. We know the computer modeling is pretty consistent in bringing the line of showers and storms close to our area. 3 00, 4 00 in the afternoon. The determining factor of whether well have one or two popup thunderstorms or a few severe thunderstorms will be the amount of sunshine and how warm it gets. Thats a possibility something well watch very closely through the day. But the great news is it clears out tomorrow night and the weekend is going to be beautiful. So tonight, more rain through the area. Temperatures in the 40s late tonight. And then as we head through the day tomorrow its going to warm up quickly. 79 or 80. A good bet, maybe even into the 80s with sunshine breaking through. Afternoon showers and storms. We clear out for the weekend. Delightful and maybe some showers through tuesday and pleasant weather through wednesday and thursday. This is spring. Im going to say it best this is typical spring weather here. Alison weve made it to spring. Leon breaking news coming in on the ebola patient who has been treated at the National Institutes of health. For the very first time two africanamerican ballet dancers will be dancing the lead roles in swan lake major company. Misty copeland and brooklyn max challenges the stereotype of what principal roles should look like in classical ballets. You wouldnt guess by watching them that Misty Copeland and brooklyn mac have never danced together before. Yet, they say partnering for swan lake with the washington ballet has been effortless. It was kind of like ok, im yours. Leon tackling the iconic roles of prince sigfried and odette has been more of a challenge. But they say theyre ready. So yeah im doing it. Never saw swan lake in my future. This is absolutely a dream come true. I just felt like this is definitely an Incredible Opportunity in place for american dancers to be doing this for the first time. Leon copeland is a soloist with the american ballet theater and got a start late in life at the ballet at a boys and girls club in california at the age of 13. Often told that she didnt look the part of a ballerina because of her muscularity and because of her race copeland persevered and skyrocketed to stardom with her success including an under armour endorsement and a New York Times best selling memoir. Its incredible that people are interested. Theyre interested in seeing Something Different and i think that says a lot. And i think the ballet world needs to take notice of that. Leon they are Something Different. Strikingly beautiful in the process. And changing minds now. Theyll be performing sunday night. Jamie sullivan on traffic watch. Jamie nothing like that. I want to start with metro rail. Near the navy yard station, a lot of people. Were seeing that and you may have some delays. Most of that is though, is because of nats game letting out. A crash inbound on the 14th street bridge blocking a lane. Thats whats causing this backup. I want to move, though, and talk outbound on the 14th street bridge. Weve also got an accident. A lot of volume. These crashes are happening at a terrible time because the nats game just let out. Lets move and talk about this slowing on 395. Right now for you, its going to be almost in the single digits. Some spots were only averaging about eight miles per hour. I want to move to talk about the 11th street bridge. So heading outbound, you average about 13 miles per hour. A crash just coming in. Might be a little bit weird. Alison on that note lets go ahead and check in with doug and find out whats going on with the weather changes. Leon all right, man whats the story, doug . Doug stuck in this pattern here of very chilly air around the area and were going to see the temperatures get back to spring levels. Not at the moment. Were in the 40s and 50s still. Farther west it is very warm and that warm air is key here. It will be moving in our direction over the next 12 to 18 hours. Already, were starting to see the effects of that with numerous showers and thunderstorms. Pushing up through the great lakes because the winds out of the southwest are pushing in the warm air. It will be later tonight when the warmer temperatures start to move in and ahead of the warm front, we could see some showers tonight. Showers tonight and tomorrow and well break into this warm air and with the warm air, there will be gusting winds and in the afternoon, there will be thunderstorms and theres a chances that some could be severe. Damaging winds and large hail. Futurecast computer model gives us a hint of the clearing that occurs in the morning and that will be key. The more sunshine for the longer periods of time tomorrow could further destablize the atmosphere so by 3 00 or 4 00 in the afternoon when the storms roll in, some could in fact be severe. Well watch that very closely for you. Good news is well clear out quickly tomorrow night and its going to be pretty nice for the weekend. Tomorrow, near 80 degrees with the storms. The question is could the storms affect the Cherry Blossoms . Steve rudin in the Weather Center with that and more. Steve fingers crossed here, doug we are going to look for conditions to gradually improve as they move into the upcoming weekend. This is what it looks like out there right now. It looks awful.
