Maryland bureau chief brad bell is live in palmer park with more on todays arrest. Well, maureen, a man is undergoing questioning right now in Police Headquarters right here behind me. He is so far charged in one crime. Considered a suspect in the second and a person of interest in two more. And theres a very real sense of relief here the Police Likely got potential serial rape suspects off the streets. Police developed 48yearold William Diggs as a suspect just last night. They spent tonight and today hunting for them and finally at 2 30 this afternoon, they made the arrest. This individual, obviously, preyed on young women. The ages of the victims were between 16 and 23 years old. Diggs is charged in connection with the rape that took place just two days ago along this stretch of 38th avenue in the cottage city brentwood area. It is alleged that he grabbed a woman, held a knife at her throat, pulled her into a ravine and committed the assault. Just steps from this mans business. Im really shocked that such a thing would happen here. This map shows the locations of the other three assaults for which diggs is considered a person of interest. They started in september. There was another in october and then another just last week. As you can see, they are all within a short walk of the center of this stretch of roadway in bladensburg where just last friday, police knocked on doors, distributed leaflets warning residents of the danger. Im concerned because we have a lot here who work at night. And, you know its dangerous so were constantly on guard. Other thing people were looking at the dates of those crimes. First one in september and not another one for a month and then now, two separated by just exactly one week. Thats why police are so relieved because they feel like there could have been many more of these terrible crimes. Brad bell, abc 7 news.
