You know we dont often get to hear from people who survive a plane crash when the plane is completely destroyed. Mainly because there are rarely many survivors in those kinds of instances. Today, the pilot of a plane that went down is talking about going through such a harrowing experience. Maryland bureau chief brad bell rather, has a story that youll see only on 7. After five days in the hospital, jeff barnett hobbled home today with lots of stitches, a few broken bones and an incredible story to tell. We lost power at about 250 feet. Shortly after takeoff. Afternoon, barnett is at the controls of the small two seater plane he owns with his passenger that day, dr. Tom cline. Just as hes done for 40 years as a pilot. He rolls down the runway and points his nose to the sky. When the engine begins to sputter, he has 10 seconds to react. Always teach you i thought the top of the trees are your runway and flare out and land into them. After that the trees take care of everything. Barnett said the plane tumbled and spun but didnt fall apart. When the nose stopped, they were upside down. He says cline looked over and said were alive. Im disappointed that luck played so much of a role and id like to think that my superior piloting skills did it. But it didnt. Barnett says hell fly again as soon as he can. He even shows the plane hes building in his garage. Just five days after getting that nightmare call from the hosp melissa says shes ready to ride along. I was shocked. But was able to see him and knew that he was ok. Made me feel a lot better. Grateful to be home with my wife and my dog. Well, back live now at tipton airport, we took a hike back into those woods where that plane came down today. Looked a lot like that. Heavy, thick dense trees. But somehow or another, there was a little opening and thats where that plane came down. In that little opening. Thats what saved these folks lives. As for their conditions broken sternum, broken vertebrae, both men are wearing collars. Both men are expected to be ok. Mrs. Barnett says only one word to describe it a miracle. At tipton airport, brad bell, abc 7 news. Amazing. Thanks buddy. Coming up on abc 7 news at 5 00 see how a local student is honoring Justice Ruth Bader ginsburg. And then a little bit later, the hidden danger that could be lurking in that valentines day chocolate. Plus whats up . Walked away. Why this arrest led to an officer being charged. Sharon fine had no idea who is carrying the metal that slammed through the windshield of the car she was driving in. It looked like a brake drum and ended up shattering part of her face. She has no way of figuring out who carried it. Wow. Sharon fine is seeing this piece of metal for a second time. She cant remember the first. First thing i saw was a gray blur. Smashed open by a 17 pound chunk of steel that came flying into fines car as it cruised around the beltway near annandale two weeks ago. I remember standing here thinking oh, so this is how im going to die. Right here at 495. Seeing photos of the damage it would have made sense if fine didnt survive. But she did. Her face shattered and now scarred. Her life saved by First Responders and luck. She was hit with a flat side of this chunk of metal. Not an edge. Theres no way to trace that. Fine and her husband bill norman cant find who was driving the truck. They never saw it. But they believe it was carrying scrap metal that wasnt secure. Something virginia law says it should have been. By all intensive purposes with what happened, i should be dead and im not. And so i feel a responsibility to tell people to please tie the equipment down. Tie the tarps over it anything of any size, no matter how heavy you think it is. The weight of this impact now a burden sharon fine will carry in her travels. There will be some scary times in the car for a while, im sure. Sharon fine credits the First Responders and the Virginia State trooper who responded with moving quickly to save her life and now, even though state police were there theres no Police Report for this. Situations like this are not considered an official accident. Information is just taken mostly for insurance purposes. Joce sterman, abc 7 news. Thank you joce. It was like during the day ill sit there and ill be in the middle of something and lose my train of thought like what happened . Im young so why is this happening to me you know . So like most women balancing work and family life, she chalked it up to long hours. Too much to do and not enough time to do it. Eventually she says she was so tired of being tired all the time, she turned to her friend and coworker dr. Jennifer milano. Milano is a neurologist who specializes in sleep behavior.
