Start times. Tom, an unusual scene up there. Yeah leon im surrounded by a lot of middle schoolers who want to get their message across right now about later start times and theyre joined by their parents who are here as well. Main theme of this protest is they want middle and high schools to start no earlier than 8 30. And if it means they have to start Elementary Schools a little early to do that theyre ok with it at this point. Kids learn better if they get more sleep. Heres video that we took earlier, before the kids surrounded me, this is whats going on outside of the Montgomery CountySchool Headquarters in rockville. Dozens of parents as well as their kids, their students out here protesting for the later start time. Reason theyre out today is the school board will be looking at this issue in a meeting tomorrow morning and they have a lot of options theyre considering about what to do for start times. I talked to a lot of folks here including a former teacher and also a middle School Student who said how much she would like to start later. Its the worst feeling in the world. Its like your body just isnt ready and you just feel like so tired. I dont want to be a zombie by the time i get to high school. First period heads were down on their desks and they had a hard time waking up. Some of them didnt come in until second period. Now, its pretty obvious what the opinion is of all these kids and their parents right here. They want later start times for middle and high schools. I did talk with the Teachers Union this afternoon. They dont necessarily agree. They did a survey of teachers and most teachers seem to want to leave the start times at the same time they are now. They stressed concerns about after School Activities for the kids and jobs as to why most teachers are opposed to changing the bell times. As you can see by these kids here they really want to get a little more sleep in the morning before having to go to school. Again, the school board taking up this issue tomorrow. Thats why theyre protesting here today. Reporting live in rockville im tom roussey, abc 7 news. That may be the happiest protest weve ever seen here tom. All right. Watch your back. Be careful up there. Under the truant bell time schedule high School Students report to class at 7 25 a. M. Middle schools start halfhour later with Elementary Schools beginning at 8 50 or 9 15 depending on which tier they are. The school board is scheduled to take up the bell times in the meeting tomorrow. Abc 7 will be there inside that meeting and bring you any updates as we get as they happen on abc news and on wjla. Chief lanier was the last witness. The case is going to the jury tomorrow. For the chiefs side, the issue is confidence in an officer. For the plaintiff, the officer who sued, the issue, he is is refusing to lie to the city council and being punished for it. The chief was here today as she has been every day since the trial began. How are you doing . How are you . Chief kathy lanier has drawn lots of attention on the d. C. Superior court. She was on the witness stand for the next day today accused of Hilton Burton of unfairly demoting him to a desk job captain he says because he told the truth to the city council that d. C. Police routinely escorted celebrities like Actor Charlie Sheen while the chief testified they do not. Burtons lawyer asked lanier. If someone says something inconsistent what you say that you dont like or dont want to hear, you can demote or transfer them. Lanier responded yes, she can, though she doesnt always do that. She insisted that burtons demotion had nothing to too with his city council testimony nor with celebrity escorts but with his mishandling of barricades in which people died. She again insisted that police do not routinely escort celebrities. The attorney then named a list of instances in which police did escort celebrities. Some when lanier was head of special operations. She said there would have been some security reasons for it or in some cases, individual officers did the escorts without her knowledge and when she found out, she punished them. Others say it happened when she was off duty and didnt know about it. Testimony while arguing about motions, the lawyer said to the judge that the department had no policy on escorts.
