Back now to that Daring Rescue that we talked about at the top. Several people ran into a burning home to help two people trapped inside. Among those to ran into the home was a man who crawled his way through the smoke and pulled an unconscious woman out to safety. Only on 7, Stephen Tschida spoke with that hero and others who helped a womans 93yearold father. Stephen is live now with the story of heroism. Steve . We have first of all 20 minutes ago i spoke to a woman who was rescued from this home from the hospital. She says she remembers nothing but very thankful one who raced to this house. They saw it engulfed in flames. You can see the damage from the windows there. They raced to the front door where a 93yearold man was trying to get out. Then they heard her scream from deep inside this house. One of them got down on his knees and crawled through the smoke to get to that woman. Firefighters got him out fast but the fire consumed this home in minutes. We pulled up and flames coming out of the window. They spotted a man inside the home as they drove past. They jumped from their car and ran to the house. They needed help. Juan thorpe sprang from his trash truck. Flames coming out the window so we ran i ran up to the front door. He helped pull bill from the house though his hair was singed and he struggled to breathe, the 93yearold fought those who just saved him. I held him. He was trying to go back in to help her. A womans screams from help echoed from deep inside the house. Rafael williams took a deep breath and ran into the home. I couldnt see it. The smoke was completely black. As he struggled to get her out, norma hathcock lost consciousness. And she did she got down and just collapsed. It took all his strength to get the 62yearold woman out of the house. I had to literally pull her, pull her and drag her to the door. Art is heartbroken about the loss of his father and sisters home but he also is thankful. My sister is very important to me. So very good that they saved her. As far as the cause of the fire accidental. Apparently, a cigarette caught up in some bed clothing. Reporting live Stephen Tschida, abc 7 news. Thank you. As for the two people pulled out of their home weve learned that the 93yearold man is going to remain hospitalized for now but he is doing well. His 62yearold daughter norma should be released sometime soon and we will continue to track their recovery. Alison . A 6yearold boy meanwhile, is critically hurt after a sledding accident in maclean. Police say that child was sledding down a driveway on matthews mill road when he crashed into a car that was driving past the home. Northern Virginia Bureau chief Jeff Goldberg tells us more about the child and what comes next. It was just before 6 00 last night when people in this quiet neighborhood in maclean knew something was wrong. We saw the police car with the sirens coming up here. Authorities rushed to this home on matthew mills road where police say a 6yearold boy was sledding down the driveway when he slid into a lexus passing by. Thats terrible the driver a 65yearold woman who lives in the neighborhood heard a loud noise, stopped the car and immediately got out and tried to help. The child was air lifted to Inova Fairfax with life lifethreatening injuries. His condition is listed as critical. Nick everhart lives across the street from the boys family. He has been a babysitter for the boy and his two sisters. Just nice likes to play sports. Really good kid. Always happy. Its obviously a hard time for everyone. Police say adults were with the child when it happened. The driver was not speeding and alcohol was not a factor. It appears this was a tragic accident. The thing that goes through my mind oh, my gooned. Kimberly is the mother of an active 10yearold girl and lives right next to where it happened. My heart is broken and my heart is broken for the driver, too. You dont want to live with that. Thats got to be terrible. We spoke briefly this morning with the uncle of the little boy who tells us as of 11 30, his condition has not changed. And he says at this point, family members are too distraught to speak on camera. In maclean Jeff Goldberg, abc 7 news. All right, jeff. Thank you. Just released 911 calls are giving some perspective on how fast that fire consumed a waterfront mansion in annapolis for a couple and their four grandchildren were killed. First call came from the Alarm Company reported that smoke alarms were sounding and then two minutes later, a neighbor called. I mean the whole house is engulfed. Is anybody inside . I have no idea. Investigators revealed yesterday that a dry Christmas Tree fuelled those flames and that cut off escape routes for those people who were inside. Tonight, were learning more about things you can do to protect your own home. Maryland bureau chief brad bell live at the scene in annapolis with that part of the story for us this evening, brad . Leon from the moment we broke the news early yesterday afternoon that it was a Christmas Tree that touched off this fire behind these gates i started getting emails from experts in fire Safety Engineering and they all said the same thing there were lessons to be learned by this tragedy. When news broke yesterday that the annapolis mansion fire was fueled by a dried out Christmas Tree, many experts in Home Fire Safety had the same reaction. Completely heartbreaking story because its something that was totally preventable. Long time Prince Georges County fire spokesman mark brady says his advice is keep a Christmas Tree inside for two weeks max. Beyond that he repeats what investigators say about the fire which claimed six lives. A Sprinkler System likely would have made what happened survivable. The best thing to have other than a working smoke alarm and in combination would be probably stand about an 85 chance of surviving a fire in your home. This demonstration shows how sprinklers work. Watch what happens as the blaze grows. Sprinklers cost about 1. 35 per square foot in new home construction. About twice that to retrofit existing homes. Dr. James milkey of the university of marylands Fire Engineering Department Says sprinklers are worth the cost. Just watch as the sprinkler comes on on the unit on the left. This sprinkler will give you that extra time so you wont have to react and just less than a minute accident you may have a few minutes to do the right thing. In addition brady says everyone living in a home should plot and practice two escape routes from every room. If a fire does happen, conditions will deteriorate fast. You cant see your hand in front of your face, its very toxic. It will kill you. Well brady also says getting out of your house from the second floor means you need one of the throwdown ladders. Make sure you have one. And he says have a fire extinguisher in your kitchen but dont try to fight any fire thats bigger than, say, a wastebasket. If theres fire in your home the best advice is to absolutely get out. Now, with regard to sprinklers laws vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction across the area. In Montgomery County, for instance, if you decide retrofit your home you get a 50 break on your property tax for a year. It will pay for itself and the insurance discounts that youll get in about three to five years. Brad bell, abc 7 news. Thank you, brad. Good advice there. A Sterling Virginia man arrested last week in an alleged murderforhire plot against his exwife remains in jail without bond. In Court Prosecutors gave a detailed list of evidence that was seized in the home including multiple weapons and material about the ku klux klan. He also allegedly described himself with a title used by the k. K. K. That means chapter president. Well a call for help tonight to find a missing gaithersburg woman who vanished on a cold december day. Today marks one month since the last time 69yearold Betty Jean Queen was last seen. Montgomery county reporter kevin lewis explains whats making this search so difficult. Mary ellen is at a breaking point. She spent the last 32 days praying and fasting for the safe return of her older sister. Ive often wondered did she go somewhere that something happened to her. Elizabeth Betty Jean Queen went missing from her gaithersburg townhome december 29th. Most of her belongings including her state i. D. Were left behind. Family members say the 59yearold is hard of hearing, has a chronic cough and is terribly shy. She has been diagnosed as schizophrenic and shes very paranoid fchl a stranger approached her she would back away. In my experience as an officer, this is a little bit unusual. Detectives have scoured local shelters hospitals, Mental Health centers and more all to no avail. Its worth our time to have these people call in. Queen often walked to this gaithersburg safeway. On sunday shed ride Public Transit to her local catholic church. Shes 52 tall 110 pounds and was last seen wearing a mint green jogging outfit. You know, i just keep my mind on the lord and sing and pray. Thats how i get through it. This is the second time that Betty Jean Queen has vanished. She disappeared last january for a day found by a passerby walking on the side of a busy road. Were along darnstown road right now a mile from her townhome. Family members hope the same good fortune comes through again. Im kevin lewis, abc 7 news. Coming up on abc 7 news at 5 00, community on edge for a late night attack that people waking up to damaged homes and frayed nerves. Plus women band together against a popular Birth Control they say put them and others at risk. And the new threat thats making new englanders nervous as they clean up from a blizzard. Im Rebecca Cooper live in Prince Georges County. Theres a new bill in the maryland General Assembly for all state schools that is both costly and controversial. Well tell you more in a live report coming up next a new call tonight to protect students by using armed officers. Just one week after a student bought a loaded gun to bowie high school, a proposal is on the table to add armed officers to every school in maryland. Rebecca cooper breaks down this proposal by taking us to schools where guards are armed and where they are. Here at Largo High School and at every high school in Prince Georges County there already is at least one armed Police Officer inside the School Provided by the Prince Georges County police department. But not nearby Kettering Elementary School or any of the elementary or junior high schools in the county system. Their Security Officers dont carry guns. Thats fine with mom rashonna harris. I wouldnt want any children to get killed or shot or anything like that. It could be an accident. In the wake of the killings at sandy hook Elementary School in 2012 the bill in the maryland General Assembly would require every school to at least one Security Guard with a gun. Following sandy hook, there were changes in many Washington Area schools. In Prince Georges County every school in the system grades k through 12 have electronic entry systems. They keep the doors locked during school hours and panic buttons placed throughout the schools. Silent alarm. So the police are going to respond and th quickly, obviously. Former Police Officer and now head of security for Prince Georges County schools says those upgrades were already being planned when the sandy hook shootings occurred. It prompted an effort to go faster if it makes sense. To get everything installed as quickly as we can. Now, at some schools like this one here in Prince Georges County opponents of the bill say its too costly. The 100 million price tag would be better spent on a new facility but supporters say its security thats needed. Reporting live in Upper Marlboro maryland Rebecca Cooper, abc 7 news. Thanks. As for virginia, theres no law requiring schools there to have armed security. There is a law requiring districts that choose to have security but they must use armed Police Officers. As of 2010 119 of the commonwealths 132 School Divisions used School Resource officers. Public schools say that all schools have a Security Guard on site but theyre not armed. Certain schools, though do have resource officers who are armed. Alison . The cleanup from the blizzard might have to be put on hold. Two more storms could drop another six inches on parts of massachusetts. In the meantime were getting an aerial look right there at the damage that was caused by those hurricaneforce winds that everyone talked about along the coast. Some communities were flooded after the sea walls broke. Look at that. Air travel in the region though, has pretty much returned to normal. But it will be a while before its back to normal for those folks. Wow. Boston get six or seven inches but like bangor maine and between bangor and portland, you get 12 inches. Ill show you why in a minute. Lets get started with some of the sleet. Videos sleet here in arlington over the past hour. Now, it has moved out of the area but you can see it bouncing off the sidewalks. Temperatures just above freezing. This stuff doesnt melt right away, you know if it was summertime and we had hailstones and it was 80 degrees, it would melt quickly. That will stay around a little bit. We have to use caution a while longer but the problems will improve as the precipitation rapidly moves eastward as its been doing all through the afternoon. Lets get to the graphics and re remind you were still under Winter Weather advisories until 9 00 tonight. The Weather Service will start dropping the advisories from west to east later this evening. If youre going out tonight, next few hours after we finish talking here im suggesting the extra caution for a while. Sidewalks, too, and driving. Conditions will improve later tonight and well be in good shape for the next couple of days. We may go through another round of Winter Weather on sunday night. In fact, thats looking more and more likely now. This is our storm watch 7 snow machine and its showing what is probably all sleet or a little rain and sleet mixed pushing east of the city. I told you earlier by 6 00 it would be east of town. I can count how fast its moving. About 35 miles an hour. Its all pushing out and well have a cloudy breezy night with temperatures not dropping significantly. Only mid 20s to 30 by morning. 30 at gaithersburg. 33 near andrews. Tomorrow morning, we forget wakeup temperatures could be probably about the same or just a couple of degrees colder. Thats because of the cloud cover and theres really no really cold air moving in tonight because the winds will be coming more out of the west. And thats good news. As far as the big picture goes al system. The cold front. Kind of attached to an Alberta Clipper thats slicing through the lakes. As that front goes by this clipper will move across new york state and hit the ocean and blow up into a significant storm center and then dump snow across northern northeastern new england especially maine and eventually into nova scotia. Thats where theyll get more heavy snow. For us well see a chilly day tomorrow. Be in the mid 30s. Well have some sun and gusty winds and off to the west see what im saying by the winds coming out of the west . Not terribly cold. Its warmer in pittsburgh than it is here. 49 incharleston. And charleston West Virginia is 32 in indianapolis. Well be fine. Cold air comes back to town late tomorrow night and saturday. As that storm moves out, the futurecast shows the wind direction coming more out of north and into canada. Saturday will be sunny but very cold. Highs in the 30 degrees for a high and then as we get through saturday night this high will move out of the way and the stage is set for an approaching area of low pressure from the west. The question that we cant answer is whether this system will cut to the south like that. That would give us measurable snow. Come right at us that will give us a mix of rain and snow and sleet or go to the north and really not do much of anything. Over the next 24 to 36 hours, computer models should resolve it a little bit more and well be in better shape to tell you what to expect. We can tell you this the forecast for tomorrow partly sunny and 32. 33 at midday. 36 in the afternoon, a lot of sunshine and some very strong wind gusts to about 40 Miles Per Hour and the next seven days shows temperatures taking the nose dive on saturday. Highs at best only at 30 degrees. Were indicating late sunday evening, were at a 70 probability of snow or mix. If this thing moves the right way, we could have a fair amount of snow here. Could. Cant say now yet. We could have an interesting monday. Snow lovers should be happy. Ok. Sounds good. See you in a bit. Ok. Coming up here on abc 7 news at 5 00 outrage in the senate. Suzanne kennedy spoke with a victim. And shes now live in stafford. Suzanne . Leon and alison it was shotgun shells like these that have damaged six homes here in Stafford County. In the houses you see behind me one of them pierced the front wall of the house, traveled all the way to the length of the house while the home owners were sleeping and then got lodged in the back wall. It also did extensive damage to the front of the house as well. Shattered glass and shotgun pellet holes are evidence of a driveby shotgun shooting. It happened at raymond paynes stafford home early wednesday morning. Its just terrible. You know Something Like would happen. Payne owns two homes that are side by side at forest lane road. Both were hit. Ridiculous. Uncalled for. I havent done nothing to nobody and if this is just a random thing. Six stafford homes have been shot in three weeks. Four on forest lane road one on cherry laurel drive and one on white oak road. Thats where patricia lives these days in fear. I dont like it. Its too close. The stafford Sheriffs Department has no description of the suspects or know why someone is randomly shooting up homes. More importantly, nobody has been hurt. The reality is that that could happen or worse. On the other side of the woods, as you see behind me there is another home. In that case, the bullet went all the way into the house into the mans bedroom and the shotgun shell lodged itself just eight inches above the bed where he was sleeping. This september or august this year it started beeping. The pad started beeping. And wouldnt stop. So she called for a technician who took a close look and determined her alarm system had never been connected to safe homes monitoring center. I had a system for two years that i paid and i just had little beeps on the door for 25 a month. She immediately called safe home again and told them i want a refund and i want to stop my service with you. Finally, the company agreed to refund her money and cancelled her contract.
