Up being much worse than they expected. As you can see behind me in the parking lot, theyre still plowing here at this school at timberlane elementary school. Many of the roadways look like this sidewalk out here right now. Employees are still trying to get the snow off their windshield as we speak but now as you can see near the school the roads have since been cleared. Im not happy about that. This Fairfax County mother is outraged after her son waited at the bus stop this morning for more than an hour. The bus never showed up. We are at the top of the hill. She tried to get her schools to school on time. It took another hour to get to her sons middle school from oakton to falls church. Its ridiculous that this happened. Michael webb is a special Education Teacher at timberlane elementary and she was more than two hours late because of traffic. Snow covered slush and you could see where it was still building. It has been awful. At one point today, closefcps became one of the top trending topics on twitter and hundreds of people voiced their frustrations on the district facebook page. The School Board Member sent out this tweet saying the decision not to close fcps was terrible. Clearly, we screwed up. They not sent a second apology, it was the wrong call given the intensity of this weather system. We are very sorry for that stating in an earlier message they made the decision with the best information they had earlier this morning. Unacceptable. Christie hinckley says her daughters bus didnt make it to school today until 10 45. And that was even after she says her daughter got on the bus at 6 30. Im angry and i think they should have delayed the school and made a call then. Shes still hard at work trying to scrape the ice and snow off her car. School district says they plan on reviewing their procedures and policy to try to make sure that this doesnt happen again in the future. In falls church diane cho, abc 7 news. Thank you very much. Prince William County faced criticism for not cancelling their classes today. Many like Madeleine Vickers tweeted out pictures like this one. This shows a bus sliding on a hill in a neighborhood east of manassas. She tells us the bus was for an elementary school. County leaders now say a dozen buses were involved in accidents. In a statement, the School System said in part, when the decision was made, it seemed conditions would allow for students to get to school safety. They continued that parents can decide to delay or not have the child attend and their child will not be penalized for that. Well coming up in a few m5 15 the admission from Loudoun CountySchool Leaders after classes stayed in session even as buses were sliding off the road. Several other School Districts and the federal government open for business today, it made for a morning rush mess. Right now, mobile track 7 is on the road checking for any traffic problems lingering into the evening rush. This is a live picture from Fairfax Station in Northern Virginia but the roads right now are nothing compared to what we saw this morning. Maryland bureau chief brad bell gives us a taste of all that gridlock. The struggle taking place on this hill says it all. Wheels spinning. Nobody moving. Ive been driving for almost an hour and a half and i cant get by this guy. Cant get up this hill. This mornings commute is one for the record books with miles long backups on snowcovered roads leading to hours long delays. Its rough out there. Havent gone over 15 miles an hour the whole way. Definitely not fun to drive through the snow and the roads are a mess. An hour behind. Most jurisdictions report hundreds of collisions while the snow is falling. In Anne Arundel County where schools opened on time three High School Students are injured in two snowrelated crashes. This truck slides off the road. These cars are banged up in a Chain Reaction crash. I ran into the back of him. All because of a couple of inches of snow . Why so bad . Plows like this one operated by Clarence Dawkins in Montgomery County did get on the roads and maryland state Highway DepartmentOfficials Say they did some pretreating but the timing of the heaviest snow at rush hour makes keeping up impossible. Traffic. If the trucks arent moving then they cant do their job. And that means nobody else can get to their jobs. Its like nothing has been done to the beltway. Well, that is the beltway youre looking at there over New Hampshire avenue. You can see traffic is moving. Just one minute ago, we saw a couple of salt trucks go by spreading. Theyre still working it. We mentioned Anne Arundel CountyPublic Schools in there. They, too were criticized today. About 30 minute ago, i spoke to a spokesperson for the School System who said if i knew it would be this bad they would have made a different decision and not opened on time. Awful lot of heartache for what amounted to three inches of snow. Brad bell, abc 7 news. You got that right. Thank you very much. Speaking of delays pepco crews are working to restore power to nearly 6200 people in downtown d. C. The mayor closed reid center and sent employees home because the building had no power. Because of the outage is under investigation, the power is expected to be restored soon. There was an electrical incident at 18th street and New Hampshire avenue in northwest where the crews are working right now. This winter blast hit hard and fast. But a lot of people had a slushy, slow day of digging out. Some are still in the midst of clearing their driveways or sidewalks and their cars because its required by law. Picking up that part of the coverage now from northwest d. C. Hi, steven. Hi, alison. The snow has stopped falling. The temperature, though is continuing to drop and this is what people throughout the region are dealing with right now. You have a lot of sidewalks that are not shovelled snow and underneath that, youve got some ice. And of course all around the region, we have plenty of these vehicles still waiting to be dug up. The aftermath of a problematic winter storm. Mark clark had a lot of shovel to go do today. Trying to get it done and a lot of come out and help out. Plenty of people spent the day shovelling or plowing their way through residual snow slush and ice. Biggest difficulty for some walking on those unshovelled walks and slippery streets. Some which didnt see plows until late in the day. If at all. Didnt do any of the roads even t street wasnt done. T wasnt done. 14th street wasnt done. It was a mess. We heard a lot of complaints from those destined to work outdoors today. Some wondered why few if any snow plows had cleared the way for them. Didnt see too many trucks out at all. I was like goodness. But there was those who remembered some of our more powerful winter storms the kind that left the region paralyzed. For them this isnt so hard to take. Its time to walk around and move around. But its quite quite nice. But as theay drags on nice could turn to nasty. The coming night is expected to bring plummeting temperatures. Its bad. And its gotten all smashed down. Whats going to happen of course, after its smashed down is these tents are going to drop and this is going to become one big sheet of ice. Yeah we just checked in with the guys shovelling the walk and talked to one of them about five minutes ago and he said that because of the dropping temperatures, that clearing away the snow from these sidewalks is getting to be much more difficult. Again, because whats underneath the snow already here has turned to ice. Reporting live abc 7 news. Steven, thank you very much. Lets get to some breaking news that were tracking right now. Jay is out on the roads. Tell us what you found. Alison, check out how horrible. This is a totally snow and ice covered road here on the head road which is in the Fairfax Station clifton area and we just did a uturn so we can go back and you can see. If you look to the left side of the road its clear that this s. U. V. Actually smashed into a tree. I hope you can see that off to the left side of the roadway. And then theres another vehicle thats a honda sedan. That also went off the roadway. This appears to have happened probably in the early hours of the morning and as you go up the hill, theres another vehicle off to the right side of the road. This part of clifton an Fairfax Station is very chilly. So the refreezing will be a huge problem out here especially seeing it does not appear as though snow plows or salt trucks came out here. If they did they only made a quick pass. Back to you guys. Be very careful out there. We appreciate that reporting. And abc 7s continuing coverage of the Winter Weather alert continues ahead with how new d. C. Mayor Muriel Bowser is reacting to the citys first problem with snow under her watch. Were also going to catch up with those working through the weather and 7 is on your side and going to bat for people who have spent weeks without heat or hot water. Scott . To that other big story, alison former Virginia GovernorBob Mcdonnells transition from a potential White House Run to a date now with the big house. Late this afternoon, a federal judge sentenced the republican to two years in federal prison beginning on february 9th. This after his conviction last year on 11 counts of corruption. Northern Virginia Bureau chief Jeff Goldberg is covering this scandal involving the former governor since the beginning. Jeff, what is mcdonnell saying tonight . Scott, the former governor certainly seems composed after this decision. Not smiling or celebratory but certainly not shaking like he was after the verdict last september. In court this morning, judge James Spencer knocking down the sentencing guidelines from 10 to 12 years to 6 1 2 to eight years based on some discrepancies he had with the conviction. But the actual decision was far less than the guidelines had suggested. It is impossible to say what punishment Bob Mcdonnell was expecting before court today. But he thanked judge James Spencer afterwards for showing mercy. Ive made the mistakes in my life and i try to put the best interest of the people first as governor. The defense calling 11 witnesses in court, all of whom spoke of the unquestionably solid and honest character of the former governor. Mcdonnell continues to maintain his innocence but expressed regret for his choices. I have failed at times in some of the judgments that i have made during the course of my governorship of hurting myself my family and my beloved people of virginia. Perhaps the most notable witness was former Virginia GovernorDouglas Wilder who the defense called very effective and who received a loud applause after questioning why the prosecutions star witness faced no punishment. Before issuing his sentence judge James Spencer also disparaging williams calling him a snake and a serpent. Judge spencer said it was clear from the more than 450 letters written on mcdonnells behalf that the former governor was a good and decent man also giving credit to his military service. But the judge added this entire case has been tragic from beginning to end. He then issued his sentence of two years in prison. You know you saw a real professional federal judge today who is careful and looked at governor mcdonnell as a human being. And departed from the guidelines significantly. I would like to say that any prison time for an elected official is punishment and i think that it does send an important message. While that prison time is set to begin on february 9th, the Defense Attorneys have already begun the appeals process so the timeline sure to be extended. Maureen mcdonnell was in court today and when Bob Mcdonnell stood up to make his statement to judge James Spencer, he asked that the judge have mercy on Maureen Mcdonnell during her sentencing on february 20th. Coming up at 6 00 more on the powerful words from James Spencer and former governor Douglas Wilder in court today. Until then live in richmond, Jeff Goldberg, abc 7 news. Virginias Current Governor just issued this statement on mcdonnells sentence saying in part like many virginians, im saddened by the effect this economy has had on our commonwealth commonwealths reputation for clean, effective government. As we put this period behind us i look forward to working with virginia leaders on both side of the aisle and restore public trust in our government. Still ahead here on abc 7 news at 5 00 the new report pinpointing just who is feeling the brunt of that flu epidemic. Plus the white house makes a stand in a key dispute with republicans as t frustration is on display in Loudoun County after buses slid off the road while trying to take students to school. That after School Leaders decided not to call off classes much like we showed you in fairfax and Prince William counties, too. 7 on your side chris pabst talked to parents in Loudoun County about what they want done. Parents that we spoke today were irate and that was very obvious on social media where many of them sounded off. Not only did Loudoun County schools stay open today, they didnt even have a late start. And that led to many problems and many disgruntled parents. I think Loudoun County really messed up on this this morning. To the Loudoun County school district, today was not a good day. Really upset about the fact that the children were late to school. Early this morning, despite temperatures in the mid 20s and plenty of snow already on the ground Loudoun County schools took no action. No delays. And no cancellations. Canceled schools for much less than this. Resulting commute was a rough one. These picture came to abc 7 from a viewer in Loudoun County. In one a bus slid off the road. In the other, a car slid into a bus. In all these motorists traveled on snow packed roads like john ryans 16yearold son who drives to school. Only had his license for six months and hes still learning how to drive in these conditions. When lauras daughter got on the bus, she started texting her mother. Shes saying its really dangerous. We have like five teachers here. Theyre combining some classes. I kept telling her its ok. Definitely hearing today wade bayard with Loudoun County schools understands the frustration. It took him three hours to get to work today. He simply said the strength of the storm caught School Officials off guard. We realize the public is upset. We cant get in a time machine and undo todays decision. We can go forward and use the information that we learned today to make better decisions in the future. Loudoun county schools got a new superintendent dr. Erik williams and the parents we spoke to said today was his first major test he and failed. You did predict the time this was going to happen. Everybody was kind of on the same page here for this one. Instead of one to two inch we got to two three. We didnt nail that. What we had figured out, it was going to start at 4 00 or 5 00 in the morning temperatures in the upper teens and lower 20s. Historically when we get that combination of Early Morning snow before the rush begins, its a nightmare whether its two inches three inches or 3 1 2. Its the timing and thats exactly what happened. Tonight, its a little better. Weve been hearing reports that its moving a little bit better but our concern tonight is icing of anything thats wet out there, refreezing. This is time lapse from southern Frederick County at oakville high school. During the afternoon, they plowed and you can see it glistening in the late daylight. That will be an ice rink and thats going to be the problem where it refreezes so even though the skies are clear, ice will be a real concern tonight and overnight and in through to tomorrow mornings rush. These are a couple more snowfall totals. Dont read each one off. Go to the highest at the u. S. Capital and everybody else somewhere in between with this very productive Alberta Clipper on this tuesday, the first real part of Winter Weather. Made for pretty scenes. Already 23 degrees. Dont take long after sunset tomorrow. They will head down through the teens tonight. 14 to 23 degrees by morning. Thats cold enough to cause some serious icing conditions where theres water and where theres slush and mush and any water content in the snow. Winds will pick up a bit. There will be a wind chill to deal with in the morning. Not nearly the wind chill that we have in the afternoon. 18 in pittsburgh. 17 in detroit and im Getting Started here. Its 7 at ohare. 5 in minneapolis. An upper level disturbance will come out of the great lakes and head to new england and that will really deliver the strong winds from the jet stream and its those jet stream winds and mid level winds come over the great lakes, see some flurries tomorrow afternoon to go along with the very strong winds. Gusting 35 to 40 Miles Per Hour. Satellite and radar shows all the snow has moved out and the next batch of clouds maybe with embedded flurries will be on the way tomorrow. Theres the storm that will pass across new york state. Atmosphere will get squeezed together and the gusty winds snow flurries were talking air temperatures tomorrow afternoon in the upper 20s. Not bad. But when you introduce winds of 30 gusting to 40 Miles Per Hour, then wind chills drop to the teens and into the single numbers. It will feel brutally cold tomorrow even though well have the sunshine and again any flurries that we have dont think well have any impact here. Forecast for wednesday, sunny and blustery in the morning. Few flurries and very low wind chill values. And any hope for warmer days, thats a relatively warm and 29 tomorrow and feeling colder. Highs in the upper teens to lower 20s for today on thursday. Friday will be in the upper 30s. Colder on saturday and stayed in the 30s through the weekend and look at the nighttime lows, 11 is the average temperature tomorrow night. Plenty of cold air. Winter finally arrived. Looking at the overall trend for the next week or two, looks like we will pull out of this by the end of next week and finally get back in the 40s for the next couple of days. You did say 11 . Yeah. For all those people that have been saying im ready for winter. They got it. Thanks for nothing. Thank you. Remember, you can carry the power of the Storm Watch Weather Team with you wherever you go. There are some that almost tripped up Speaker Boehner within his own party. 25 republicans voted against him keeping his gavel. Though not enough. I was doing pretty good on the walk over here from my ceremonial office until i ran into devan nunezs three little girls, my three biggest fans and one of them had to come over and give me a kiss and i was a mess. Its legacy time for this guy. Even though he told me he doesnt do legacy i dont believe that. With the republicans the majority in both chambers and the most dominant numbers weve seen in 70 years theres intense pressure upon them to be productive and theres some reason to be optimistic. Coming up we spend our snow day a snowy mushy mess on area roads after the years first real taste of winter slammed into the area right at the peak of the morning rush and tonight, fears that melting snow would turn to ice. Snowy start to the day is part of the problem as temperatures are headed well below freezing. And for what that means for our roads and your morning, lets get to chief meteorologist doug hill. Doug . All right scott and alison ill tell you, it is going to turn to ice and thats going to be a real problem. So fortunately, we have some areas that were able to dry outside of the beltway and the interstates because of the volume and the treatments there and the winds helped to dry that out. So many other roads many spots will be very icy during the night and through tomorrow morning especially. Very concerned about that. Lets show you some images here that i think really put everything inperspective. See all those jurisdictions and those states in light blue. Those are wind chill advisories. Northwest chicago, wind chill warnings. Its all indicative. This arctic air mass getting move in. Were in 20s and low 30s now. Temperatures tonight will drop in fact, 18 15 degrees in hagerstown. Joesy continues our stormwatch coverage from the live desk with a lot of parents out there who were really vocal today. Well alison we ended up with some nationally trending hashtags here in the d. C. Area including close fcps that had angry parents fired up and they did not hold back. This is the hashtag today. We looked at some of these tweets. This woman asking, what the heck . Why didnt they decide to close down fcps today . Wrong decision she says. I love this one. A little bit of a star wars reference. This is how theyre getting home from school today in Fairfax County as a result of that. This guy great. When a bad decision becomes a worldwide trending hashtag, its a good indicator it was a really bad decision and this person commenting on how three inches of snow in our area somehow becomes a global trending hashtag and i love this as well. Overall, Virginia State police say they responded to 100 crashes during the morning rush. And some counties like Prince William say they had more than 100 crashes on their own. Arlington county dealt with 96 accidents while i66 was shut down for halfhour to deal with a jackknifed tractortrailer. Hmm. Time now for a check on the current traffic situation and for that we go bob in the wtop Traffic Center with details. Bob . Certainly a contrast from this morning, scott. Things are very quiet out there. What we have to worry about is sun has set and temperatures are below freezing. Well see a lot of ice out there overnight. Were starting to see that out there already. On the interstates but especially on neighborhood streets, have to plan for extra time to get to work tomorrow morning as a lot of ice will be the order of the day. For now, light volume there. Brief slowdowns and on i95 headed south, 66 did well heading west. And then in a couple of spots farther south but the earlier crash in falmouth is gone.
