Trying to go up 30 in the playoff series against the raptors. Maybe a lot of folks would have predicted. Alison i know. It is a big night. Tim no question about that. They have put themselves in pretty good position here in this first round series and they i mean this is the way that they went against toronto all yearment they didnt win. Now theyve won both games in toronto and taken the early lead in the best of seven series. The wizards know the first round matchup is getting under way. Toronto dominated the regular season schedule and the wiz kids know it. Robert whats their mindset . Whats the buzz . Robert i hate taking a trip down memory lane. Last year, the wizards led the bulls 20 games and they came back only to drop game three. They can get this game three and be one step closer to a clean sweep. So far the wiz have handled business on the road and now its time to come back home and do the same. Check the house and dont let everybody come in here and win. I know we struggled last year. This is a whole new year. We have to elevate our game. We have to bring it back here. Robert the key for tonight, dont get comfortable. Auto ooun thats my focus to these guys is. Game three is going to be hard. Its going to be harder than the first two games we played. And looking at things that weve done, we can play better and were going to have to play better. Reporter this is a therapist who has worked with transgender men and women for more than 40 years. Its still the same person. Go one step at a time like going hiking. I dont like being asked about my former name. Thats not anybodys business. Reporter nathaniel is careful about what he shares and what he doesnt. But theres one thing he wants others to know. People who are considering transitioning or think that transgenderism is something that they are wrestling with it doesnt happen quickly. It doesnt happen overnight. Its not something that fixes everything. Reporter nathaniel tells us hes happy and has support. Something not everyone has. Transgender or not. Thank you and coming up at 4 00 special honor for several local cities including arlington is one of the most Livable Cities in the u. S. I just had the feeling come over me that i need to go home and check on my husband. Leon big honor for arlington and this region. Aarp has named arlington has one of the most Livable Cities as well as the best cities for staying healthy. Alison thats right and d. C. And some maryland cities made the list. Joining us now, bob loncato, volunteer state president for aarp virginia. Nice to have you here. Thank you, alison, leon. Alison tell us first of all, some of the factors that you determined these list and winners. Let me start by saying im a 30year resident of arlington and very proud to know that we got this award. I have a daughter that we want to the Public Schools in arlington. So its about what you have in your housing stock. Its about how safe your streets are. Its about how the exercise capacities you have in a given community. We have some of the best recreational facilities in the area. We have half the number of traffic fatalities in arlington and other places, too. And so its about how you build a community for all ages but recognize that your communities are getting older. And its a real combination of all different things. Leon what strikes me though transportation seems to be a big factor in how people decide which the best place is to live. Its always tough to get around. It depends on how you go about having options for transportation. You have vans and you have bicycles. We have a very heavy bicycle presence in arlington thats been increasing over the years. And as long as you have options that people could take advantage of the transportation, thats really an important factor. You cant fight congestion in every place. If people have options and use transportation and go where they need to go its an important factor. Alison were celebrating arlington in particular. There were other local cities mentioned here. There were. A lot down in south and d. C. Got recognition as well. Blacksburg got some recognition but i like ours better. We got two recognitions. Livable and healthy. Alison and were also talking about for everyone. I think we hear aarp and assume were saying for people over 50 but youre saying for everyone who lives there, this makes it a really livable place. It is. Focused on the 50 plus and in then all generations benefit when its a good community. The saying is you can live anywhere. That does not make it a livable community. Its what you do as a community to make it livable that works. And arlington as the arlington way and has that way for years and were very beneficial about it. Leon not going to get many arguments around here. Nice to have you here today. Have a good weekend. Fargo, north dakota show up on a couple of those. I want to know who voted in that. All right, still ahead here at 4 00 dealing with spring storm season and potential damage to your home from the weather. 7 on your side to determine when to call your insurance company. Sam a d. C. Couple had their day in court in a case of assault on a Police Officer. Im sam ford. That story is coming alison a twist in the case of three people charged with assaulting a d. C. Police officer. Those charges were dropped today. D. C. Bureau chief sam ford talked to the former defendants as they left court. Sam they walked out of court today surprised and happy. Case dismissed. He and his brother all have been charged with assault on a Police Officer after an incident april 1st caught on video. This is straight out police brutality. Sam the incident they say took place in front of their children. He was accused of spitting on a police car and an officer had him on the ground. His wife said when his wallet and cell phone fell out of his pocket and she went to pick them up. The officer came and rushed up and shoved me on to the back of a police car and took his stick out and begin to start hitting me with the stick. Sam the Police Report said that his wife ran up to the officer and started to grab him attempting to free him. Today i was shocked. Sam mccray had been charged with assault on a Police Officer. The government dropped all charges against us and dismissed the case. Government just didnt want to waste their time and money on doing something they didnt have a case for. Sam they say they already filed brutality charges. Theyve launched their investigation. Its going to be a good weekend. He has another case from last year of assault on a policewoman. She was found guilty in that one and is now on 18 months probation. Reporting from d. C. Superior court, sam ford, abc 7 news. Sam lets get to baltimore where the Police Department is having a press conference in the wake of all these protests. To express their Constitutional Rights in the first amendment. We are a city that faces many struggles. And we have many challenges. We are also a city that has had Peaceful Demonstrations for more than 40 years. To any and all that would seek to bring chaos to their city the people of baltimore will not tolerate you hurting our community where we live where we worship and where our kids go to school. The real chance for reform shouldnt be lost to those who would find joy and destruction on this great city. We also are a Police Department that has many challenges. Over the years, we have had a number of incidents that have tarnished this badge and the reputation of this department. Ive been brought here with a team to be focused on reform to this organization. We should never lose sight of the fact that we also have thousands of women and men who come to work every day and protect the people of baltimore. In a very proud and professional way. Over the course of the last 12 days, we have undertaken a massive investigation. We have ramped up a task force of more than 30 plus investigators from various disciplines in this agency. Dozens of interviews have been conducted. Many more remain. A stepbystep meticulous investigation is taking place. It is much like you go to the opthamologist and he asked you, can you see this picture . Were refining our investigation, were getting closer and the picture is getting sharper and sharper as we move forward. We have canvassed the entire geographic region on foot multiple times. And we would do more often. The video footage of the camera that may have caught even a single moment of the incident is under review. This city has close to 600 cameras within the city as a whole. Much of that footage will be released today. We are we are narrowing down the timeline of events that led to mr. Grays tragic death and the events surrounding them. The timeline will continue to change. We found new information and we will continue to find more information as we go. We know he was not buckled in the transportation wagon as he should have been. No excuses for that period. We know our Police Employees failed to give him medical attention in a timely manner multiple times. There are still many questions that we dont have the answers to and some open ended areas that we need to focus heavily on. Were going to ask for help for citizens and residents on things they may have seen or videos they may be in possession of. Weve extended this out several times. Were going to share with you today some more witnesses that we have caught on cameras that we like them to i want to clear up some confusion. We received a preliminary verbal report from the medical examiner. Not the official report, they still have working on that. They still have to complete a toxicology that can take 30 to 45 days. What im told is they may be bringing in experts to look at the spine and i dont know how long that will take. Let me further clear up. When we take our information or our files to the States Attorneys Office on friday that is not the conclusion of this investigation. That is step one of us gathering information, step two is taking it to the States Attorneys Office for them to look at our, our interviews. Theyre going to have questions and theyre going to send us back out to reinterview people. Theyre going to send us back out to look at more evidence. So that is not the end of this investigation on may 1st. That is just us sitting down for providing all the data that we have. We will continue to follow the evidence wherever it goes. I just finished a meeting of ministers in the western district. We shared with them information that we knew. It was the good meeting they shared with us what the parishioners in the neighborhoods are thinking in that area. We will reach out more to other ministerial groups within the city. I think now is the time usually in events like that that theres fingerpointing and blame. I am clear that reverend gwen of minister alliance has called for my resignation. Thats not going to happen. Im focused on my job. Im focused on leading this organization. I have been a reform commissioner. Ive taken the organization that has many challenges and faced it head on. Leon we will step away at this moment but weve been listening there to the Baltimore Police commissioner there briefing the press and actually revealing some new information coming from the investigation thats under way right now with some 30 plus investigators that were on a closed Circuit Television cameras in that area around where the arrest was made. He is revealing has been checked out and they will be releasing that video to the press today. Alison uhhuh. This is surrounding death of freddie gray and theyre asking the community to step up if they saw anything that they may have their own video to share. We will continue to follow all the developments out of baltimore throughout this afternoon and this evening. But first, we want to go ahead and turn to the weather now. Another cold night ahead. Leon all right. Will we get a warmup this weekend . There are a lot of activities planned in this town here. Lets check it out with doug hill standing by. Good word for the weekend. Doug its going to get in the mid to upper 50s. Well stay cool. Periods of rain to deal with. For this moment take a look live at our camera right now at st. Leo the great school in fairfax. Absolutely gorgeous. Crystal clear and 58 degrees. 61 in manassas. 61 at Reagan National and 62 degrees at quantico. As we head through the evening hours, it will get mighty cold again. Thats a frost advisory. Overnight through sunrise north and west of the city a little farther north, the darker purple color. That is another freeze warning. Second night in a row, the best hours for a possible freeze or frost will be between 3 00 in the morning and about 7 00 in the morning the way things are looking right now. 31 is the forecast low for gaithersburg. 32 in martinsburg by morning. 35 at andrews. You notice along the bay its somewhat warmer with the warmest spot in Downtown Washington at 41 degrees. Clouds through the day. This computer model says the rain will move in the area about 5 00 to 6 00. Periods of rain through nighttime hours into sunday morning. The students were performing the finale of the School Production of american pie when the orchestra pit cover collapsed underneath them and sent the performers into the pit below. I knew that nothing of that nature was supposed to happen. And you hear a huge crash and you know that its not supposed to happen. You know something is wrong. Alison nearly a dozen students were injured and they were all taken to area hospitals. Most have already been released. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the accident. And a remarkable story from utah now where a wifes gut instinct helped save her husbands life. You can call it a wifes intuition maybe. She was at work and all of a sudden, she got a strong feeling that she needed to rush home and check on her husband scott. When she arrived, she found him in serious trouble. He had been working on the familys s. U. V. When it slipped off a jack and crushed him. I knew if i hung on long enough, my prayers would be answered and she would be able to come home. I just kind of panicked. I obviously was scared. But i did hear him. So i knew he was still alive. I heard him kind of say help me love. Alison her husband was trapped there for an hour and a half. He suffered six broken ribs and internal injuries. Emergency officials, though, say scott might have lost his life had he been under that car much longer. Leon lucky man alison sure is. Thank goodness she got there in time. Leon exactly. All right. Alison still to come here at 4 00, the push for understanding and acceptance. Well talk to a local psychologist about the issues transgender people face from alison we have this video into our abc newsroom. Metro Transit Police just released this video of an assault. It happened about three hours ago. This was at the Eastern Market metro station. A 69yearold man says he was pushed by another man. The two exchanged words and the suspect can be seen in the video punching the victim in the face. Knocking him there on to the escalator. Anyone with information is asked to call metro Transit Police. Leon as we wait for Bruce Jenners expected revelations tonight in the diane sawyer news special where he was expected to talk about transitioning from male to female. One local woman says that she had no choice but to make that big change in her life. The alternative was very dark or i could transition. Leon learn why the local Transgender Community believes that Bruce Jenners announcement could be a crucial moment in the quest for understanding. Our special report journey to transgender airs tonight on abc 7 news at 11 00. Alison joining us right now is michael hendrix, clinical psychologist who has worked extensively with this topic and in the Transgender Community here in the d. C. Region. Thank you for being here with us today. Bruce jenner being on national tv and getting all this attention, is this a good thing in your mind. Ultimately it is a good thing. Excuse me. Its putting it in the public eye in a way that people will Pay Attention to because of who he is. Leon in this case im not a big fan of tabloids, you know. But in this case, the tabloids are actually way ahead of the country in actually pulling people into this conversation. Yes or no because the tabloids often sensationalize things. Leon did that make you, i guess, nervous when this whole thing began . It did, because nobody had spoken to bruce. He hadnt said anything publicly. So there are a lot of people who were speculating and im always a little hesitant to do that. Especially when were talking about somebodys private life. Leon yeah. Alison weve been talking about this issue a lot recently. And the word that seems to come up a lot both for the person transitioning and for the community is the word fear. Is that a common problem . It is actually. In fact theres a whole understanding of minority stress which which is someone who has a minority status in the community experiences. Thats in addition to all the stress that everyone experiences but the morrow oppressed and misunderstood, the higher the stress level. It creates fear and it also sometimes that fear turns inward and actually, the Suicide Attempt rate is the highest in transgender individuals of any population weve studied. Leon that brings it a lot. Bruce jenner making this choice. Why in the world would it take so long . I mean hes been weve known him, been in the public eye for decades. And if hes been struggling with this for this long how is it that could occupy a persons i dont know, their entire psyche for so long. Imagine being in the public eye and knowing what the stress is for just being transgender. And then add to that being in the public eye and having all of that additional focus on you. Leon youre not surprised by that. No. That it took so long . No. Leon interesting. Before we go real quickly, any one myth that you would want to have dispelled about this whole process of transitioning . Probably the most important one is that people think of transgender as being a Mental Illness and its not. Its part of the natural, normal spectrum of human sexuality. Alison interesting. Leon the conversation has begun alison yes. Thank you so much. Leon well watch and see what happens tonight. Ok. Leon all right. Take care. Coming up next on abc 7 news at 4 00, its the episode that left fans in tears. Others outraged. Well, Entertainment Weekly featured a story on dereks death prompting the magazine to then issue an apology. Leon apparently some Montgomery County Police Officers are fans of grays anatomy. The department sent out a tweet today about it poking fun at the show. Alison heres what the tweet says. We sympathize with all those saddened by the death of dr. Derek sheppard. Your sadness cant be used as an excuse to commit crimes. In case you were thinking about it. So we asked a lot of fans to weigh in on this shocking twist. Tonya wrote on our abc 7 facebook page. Sad, i was crying. Why . Why . I cried and my Blood Pressure went up. Seriously, i did. Carolyn tried to be optimistic. She wrote maybe shes dreaming and hes not really dead. That always happens, doesnt it . You can join the conversation by going to our abc 7 facebook page. Although i read that Patrick Dempsey is moving on to other things. Leon mistaken little week all of a sudden now those who might have been marginally interested in the show they go i want to see the guy. Doug i got my hockey game interrupted and i was back in my office in 20 seconds. Im good. Im ok. Hope youre ok with this. It does feature some rain. Not tonight. It is gorgeous out there. Clear, cool and breezy at this hour. Temperatures well below average but well take them. We have anyway. Temperatures in the upper 50s to about 60. 61 right now at Reagan National. Out at washington dulles right now, 59 degrees. And in areas west of town, not only the cool numbers right now. Look at the wind gusts. 38mileanhour gusts in iamsville.
