Well, drivers all across the region are having that sinking feeling as they hit potholes on virtually every street out there. And today Prince Georges County went on the offensive to tackle the biggest offenders. Suzanne kennedy live in hyattsville with more on the pothole blitz today. Hi suzanne. Hi alison. Take a look behind me over here. Weve been watching this pothole on annapolis road all afternoon. If they arent hitting it head on, they are swerving to miss it. It causes another completely different road hazard. The crews are out working today to fix these hazards here in Prince Georges County. Last year they repaired 2200 potholes. Theyre not sure if theyll have to fill that many this year. With 1900 county roads, they have their work cut out for them. Were doing a blitz. What that means is were out countywide, were using our snow maps and were just driving street by street until we fill the potholes. So what do you do when you see one of them . You call 311. When you call 311, youll get directed into the call center. Well take you into the call center and tell you whats going on in there. As you can imagine, they are quite busy. Reporting live in hyattsville, maryland suzanne kennedy, abc 7 news. So suzanne, as hard as we try, you cant always avoid every single pothole but there are some things you can do to try to protect your vehicle. Number one, make sure your tires are fully inflated. That will help to minimize any damage if you do hit one of those craters. And dont assume that a puddle is just a puddle because it could be covering a massive pothole underneath. You can also download an app like waze and that can alert you to any upcoming road hazards. Speaking of roads in rockville, the mayor and city council think that restructuring part of Rockville Pike will reduce gridlock for thousands of drivers. Theyre talking about a two mile long stretch near the twin brook metro station. But as Montgomery County reporter kevin lewis explains not everyone is in favor of that plan. Kevin . Well leon consistency or lack thereof that is the issue here. These towers behind me they make up white flint which more or less want a more narrow Rockville Pike. But as you walk with me here were now entering rockville city limits and the Planning Commission here in rockville sees Rockville Pike in a whole different way. Rockville pike is packed. And so the city of rockville wants to rebuild the roadway from white flint to town center. Most notably adding two continuous lanes in both directions. Dont want to see anymore pavement than whats necessary. Howard feldman is pushing for a more walkable community. He says more lanes means more problems. I cant imagine somebody getting caught in the middle of the light and not being able to cross and being stuck in traffic. I worry about the elderly. I worry about children crossing the street. So better for bikes. Better for pedestrians. Rockvilles Planning Commission approved the controversial proposal back in june. It felt extra travel lanes would actually make pedestrians safer. Its a softening thing between the traffic on the pike and the storefronts so people if theyre sitting on the sidewalk outside, theyre not theyre not right next to the road. Theyve got some gap in there. But feldman couldnt disagree more. So if we can do that down on this part of the pike were having a hard time understanding why it has to be done north of the montross. As far as the timeline goes these proposed changes are still years away but the time to make your voice heard is now. In fact, the deadline for Public Comment in rockville is tomorrow. One other step that metro is implementing is a study to see what benefit there might be from lowering the speed of metro trains in the inner core from a maximum of 59 down to about 45 miles an hour.
