Week. The train stopped short of the Lenfant Plaza station less than 24 hours ago. Heres more on the investigation for us. Well confirm the name of the woman that has died. What have we learnbout that . We just learned the name from the b. C. Medical examiner. Releasing the name carol gluber. They have not released a name or where she was from. In the meantime the ntsb metro investigators spend the day down there behind me in the tunnel at the Lenfant Plaza metro station trying to figure out exactly what went wrong yesterday afternoon. Now, weve been able to talk to a number of passengers passengers who were stuck in that train yesterday for 45 minutes to an hour they speculate. And they were able to take some cell phone video of what happened and it really tells, as you look at the video how terrifying it was down there for that particular time as smoke filled those trains. We talked to the people who took that video. You know it slowed down and then stopped. But this time just stopped. And it was a little smoke coming from outside to inside. All you can do is pretty much just hold your head down or cover your mouth. And thats when the coughing started. And people started to freak out. And both those gentlemen you just heard from talked with us and had real questions about the evacuation plan. Once they found out that they were just about 800 feet from the Lenfant Plaza platform they were wondering why the conductor didnt open the doors and let people walk back there instead of trying to back the train up. Coming up tonight at 5 00 well talk more about that and let you hear some more and see some more from the video of what happened yesterday inside the trains. Reporting live at the Lenfant Plaza metro stop Horace Holmes abc 7 news. Thank you for that. An average of 721,000 people ride the metro every single weekday and when that smoke started filling cars yesterday afternoon, some turned from passengers to heros. Abc 7s Suzanne Kennedy spoke with one man who took action. But first, heats go to our Jeff Goldberg live outside Medstar Washington Hospital Center where they just updated the condition of those hospitalized. Jeff . They certainly did, alison. A few hours ago i did speak with a Family Member of carol gruber. She was devastated by what had happened. Not really Family Members said to comment much more on this situation. But doctors here at Medstar Washington Medical Center certainly dealing with patients not only physically dealing with a very difficult situation but also emotionally, psychologically after what happened yesterday. A truly traumatic experience. Here now some footage of what we saw yesterday. Just these amazing pictures after this incident taking place at Lenfant Plaza and of the many passengers that suffered injuries many were treated on the scene or nearby hospitals later released smoke inhalation being the primary cause of concern. Here at Medstar Washington Medical Center 18 patients were admitted and 12 treated and released and six patients remained hospitalized today. Four of whom have either been released or will soon be released. The other two patients, one was upgraded from Critical Condition to serious and one upgraded from serious to fair. So certainly improving. Here at the hospital smokerelated injuries was open and after the incidents, patients were clearly shaken up. The other one was kind of stoic and trying to take as much in while they could worrying whether or not they had symptoms or not. The doctor saying that thankfully no one suffered any burns but some of these airrelated injuries from the respiratory issues he says that people could be dealing with coughing shortness of breath for about another week or two. Coming up at 5 00 were going to hear from one man who was inside that metro station when this took place yesterday. Now, were going to go live to Suzanne Kennedy who is live at Lenfant Plaza who spoke with a man who yesterday jumped into action. Suzanne . Well Jeff Jonathan rogers wasnt even supposed to be on that yellow line train. He accidentally got o he was supposed to travel on a green line train from a Work Convention downtown to his northeast washington office. But this video shows what happened to him instead. He was on that yellow line train that was enveloped by smoke yesterday afternoon in that deadly accident. He says a woman seated across from him was in extreme distress. She fell to the floor of the train and ultimately was unconscious and it was about that point that rogers and half dozen riders attempted to help by performing c. P. R. We had to do something and that was the only thing that seemed like the right thing on do. So then we just did it. So it seemed like you know that we proved it wasnt going to work. Coming up tonight at 5 00 well tell you what rogers says complicated efforts to help the woman and what he has to say to the womans family. Reporting live from the Lenfant Plaza metro station, Suzanne Kennedy, abc 7 news. So many stories from that situation, suzanne, thank you. Our question of the day is asking if you are thinking twice before riding metro. Go to the wjla Facebook Page and let us know. Well share some of your responses a little later in this newscast leon . Alison, today marks 33 years since the first deadly accident on metro. Three passengers died when an orange line train derailed between the federal triangle and smithsonian stations. 25 people were injured. That was the deadliest incident until nine people died when two trains collided almost six years ago. That first crash on metro its often overshadowed as we look back at history because it happened on the same day as the air florida crash. 74 people on board flight 90 died when the plane crashed into the 14th street bridge and then sank into potomac river. Four people in the vehicles on that bridge were also killed. Five people from the plane were rescued from the icy river. So divers have recovered both black boxes from crashed airasia flight 8501. The cockpit voice recorder was retrieved from beneath heavy wreckage in the java sea this morning. The flight data recorder was recovered yesterday. It could take up to two weeks for both devices to be analyzed and divers have recovered 48 of the 162 victims on board. New developments now on the terror attacks in paris. Investigators have now tracked down this man arrested in bulgaria believed to be linked to the brothers that carried out the massacre at a paris newspaper. And police are still trying to find this woman, the alleged girlfriend of the gunman who killed four people at a kosher supermarket. Today the French Police officers shot in last weeks attacks were honored and the four hostages killed at that supermarket were laid to rest employees at Charlie Hebdo newspaper refused to give into fear defiantly releasing this weeks issue distributing a record three million copies. All right. Now we move on to this locally. For the last five months a local jewishowned business has received threatening phone calls every day. Calls from people who identify themselves as associates of isis. Stephen tschida is at the live desk for the story youll see only on 7 00. Several times a day, threatening calls come in from individuals who say they are affiliated with isis. Now, because this is a sensitive situation, we are not identifying the business nor any employees. Hang you with it. Do you hear me . Im going to kill you im going to murder you. This is a threat. The threats also are posted on the companys Facebook Page. They are antisemitic and laced with racial and homophobic slurs. The owners have called d. C. Police that handed the investigation to Homeland Security that deemed the threats not credible. The fear at that business remains. Its offensive towards individual people that work here. Its offensive towards race sexual orientation, very frightening. Very hostile. And its extraordinarily uncomfortable. All of our staff at this point dont want to say their names when they answer the phone. Now verizon says it can trace the calls but needs detectives to instruct it to do so. D. C. Police say they are waiting to hear from verizon. So apparently a lack of cooperation and coordination is allowing this onslaught of threats to continue. Take a look at this video. A broken water main has filled a section of Four Mile Run drive near South Cleveland street with water. Emergency crews had to shut down the road earlier this afternoon. So drivers will have to take an alternate route because that area remains closed at this hour for repair work. No word on when it will be complete. Boy. Yeah. And then it is and then the Washington Sanitary Commission says it may be midnight before the water starts to run again for about two dozen homes in hyattsville. This is after a water main break along route 1 between albion road and van buren street in hyattsville. Richard is there live with more on the repair and the problems thats created tonight. Rich . Yeah leon this is a very busy scene. Behind me you see baltimore avenue and you can see thats where that water main break is right now. That big piece of concrete there. Theyve actually pulled that out of the hole and theyre working down in there. Now, theyre hoping like you guys said, about having this main repaired by midnight and the other big issue here is traffic because of other utilities on site they figured theyll have to keep the lane a two lane road for several more days. Now, this main as we said, busted about 6 30 monday night about three million gallons of water flooded the street. This is an old main dates back to 1925 made out of cast iron. Theyre hoping to replace it with something called ductile iron. Much more flexible and thinner. This has affected about 25 homes without water. They have brought in some bottled water. This has also left a huge mess in the neighborhood with all that floodwater, mud, debris everywhere and so far nothing is coming out of the tap. Dont shower. Hopefully theyre going to have it repaired by midnight tonight. Whole lot of things that are aging in our society, bridges, highways, etc. And dont get to them until they break and you can see these repair crews out there and also the slow traffic moving along. It will get a lot worse as the commute continues here in hyattsville. Reporting live richard reid, abc 7 news. Thanks rich. Lets get a look at the traffic situation. Bob emler standing by in the wtop traffic center. How does it look tonight . On the inner loop, very slow in Prince Georges County to a point just before route 50 theres a tractortrailer that is stopped in the roadway there and that is causing delays all the way around to that point just before route 50. Otherwise, Montgomery County beltway, some volume delays here and there. No incidents along the way and 7 west has a crash before route 17. 95 south is generally slow from about quantico to puts out s stafford. No incidents along the way. Thats what it looks like on the beltway at good luck road. That will be between the b. W. Parkway and 450. That delay is because of the truck in the roadway and traffic on 395 south doing well here around the pentagon. It slows down a bit south of here getting down to landmark. No incidents along the way. Thank you bob. Talk to you in a bit. Ok. So here we go again. Yeah. Whats the deal . Were calling for 50 probability so not a slam dunk done deal. Well get swiped by a system fairly weak system. Problem is a little bit of snow at 4 00 or 5 00 in morning on very cold surfaces, we know what happens. Weve seen it over and over again. Thats the concern and no advisories issued yet. That could happen laterif the system comes together and future computer models start to glom on to that as a solution. Steve rudin will keep his eye on that all night and give you important updates later this evening. In the meantime, great day out there. High clouds. Still sun getting through. 34 degrees right now at Reagan National airport and other temperatures are below average. High is 43 and were holding in the upper 20s to low 30s across most of the area right now. 27 degrees in gaithersburg. 31 near Andrews Air Force base. Advisory is in effect already. Not for our viewing area. South of richmond to the west edge of Hampton Roads and through North Carolina freezing rain advisories in pink a little farther south. The system itself is over north georgia. Its going to move northeastward and doesnt have a lot of moisture to deal with. Again, we dont need a lot of wintery moisture snow or sleet to cause issues. Overnight temperatures will steadily drop. Supply of cold air will come in. Between 15 and 23 degrees by morning and sometime around 4 00 or 5 00 in morning well see this mix of snow and some areas of sleet. Were not worried about it being too warm or being rain that freezes. No. It will be frozen precipitation, snow and a little bit of sleet mixed in. Temperatures when we wake up in the morning will be plenty cold. Teens and low 20s. Thats the concern even with a little bit of precipitation. Now, the futurecast model were using shows that early morning, were taking a swipe at some snow, some sleet to the south, it quickly moves out of the picture and we get sunshine back overhead late tomorrow afternoon and fine weather for the end of the week. You see that nice recovery after this possible mix of snow and sleet in the morning especially the farther south and east of washington you are. And if theyre going to be any accumulations of note they will be well south and east of washington. Two inches possibly. In these areas, that will knock the total even more. Metro area maybe a trace. Maybe an inch at most and maybe flurries or less north and west of town. Small deal but a small deal of snow or ice early in the morning can cause a disproportionate problem of heartaches and headaches and everything else. Once we get through that nice warmup. Maybe 50 degrees by sunday with late day rain showers. Thats hard to believe. Considering where we sit. Thats going to feel awesome. Yeah it will be nice. Keep us posted. I will. Folks, make sure you tune good morning washington tomorrow morning for the latest on the weather and the impact were going to have the roads. Well be on the air early starting here at 4 00 a. M. Coming up here on abc 7 news at 4 00 when i saw the last number i yelled up to my wife. I think we won a few bucks. You know . You want to talk about putting it mildly . Youre going to meet a retired couple coming into quite a bit of money in their golden years. A local School System promises to improve the way it handles allegations of child sexual abuse. Ill have that is there an elk in your bed . With sleep number, now theres an adjustment for that. You can only find sleep number at a sleep number store. Right now find the lowest prices of the season, with the c3 Queen Mattress set only 1199. 98. Know better sleep with sleep number. Went back and forth. You read the numbers, you read them fward and ill read them backwards and we went back and forth and we were like in a daze. Now you can pay somebody to read them for you now. Yep. Hear about harold diamond . He was there talking about 326 million Mega Millions jackpot. The 80yearold re principal in new york state and his wife of 55 years chose to take the cash value of the largest prize in new york lottery history i loved that. How many of his old students are calling him up . Hey, mr. Principal, remember me . You were always my favorite. Thats great. Closer to home here the Montgomery County school board spent some time talking about exchanging school start times. Thats right. They didnt make any final decisions but started discussing ways to implement new protocols on sexual abuse in schools. And Montgomery County kevin lewis is in rockville with the latest. Hi, kevin. Hi there, alison. You may recall back in october, Police Arrested a contractor for allegedly grabbing girls behind Baker Middle School up in damascus. Well problem is School Leaders never told parent about the incident until abc 7 broke the story more than a month later. As you might imagine, parents were outraged. Calls for more transparency and so today, mcps announced the changes its hoping to implement. It ramped up the child sex abuse work group. It included administrators, members of the t. P. A. Police department, Child Welfare services. Also members of local not for profits. That group presented a power point project today to the board of education. Among the list of proposed changes, stronger background checks for more than 20,000 school employees. Thats in addition to contractors and volunteers. A group also calling for more rigorous training clearly spelling out exactly how to report allegations of child abuse when they arrive. While most agree the Group Commission was well intentioned some Board Members expressed serious concern about School Resources and objectivity. I wonder if were at the point where most if not all of this need to go elsewhere with objective eyes because i worry some may be too close to this to be able to handle that. Which perception do you hope to change here . I want to make sure that our parents in our community have absolute confidence in how seriously we take the safety and well being of our kids. We recognize that we can do better and we will do better. Now early next month, Montgomery County council will hold a meeting with mcps. Multiple sources tell me Certain Council members are livid about this situation here. They are planning to grill mcps brass, possibly going so far as to call for someones resignation. Live in rockville, im kevin lewis, abc 7 news. Thank you. He says he wants to stay free during his appeal. Still to come what a judge has to say about former Virginia Governor Bob Mcdonnells request. We are riding the rails with metro passengers one day after that deadly commute. Find out how service is bein just about an hour ago abc 7 learned the identity of the passenger killed during mondays metro smoke incident. A d. C. Medical examiner has confirmed that the victim as carol gluber. Meanwhile, the National Transportation safety board says that an electrical malfunction arcing is to blame. Arcing is what occurs when the rail comes in contact with another substance that conducts electricity such as water. The exact cause of the arcing is still under investigation. And a viewer sent us this chaotic video aboard the smokefilled yellow line train at Lenfant Plaza. Dozens of injured passengers were treated at three hospitals across the district and less than 30 minutes ago, the d. C. Mayor Muriel Bowser held a News Conference to assure people the city is working to get answers. The National Transportation safety board has launched an investigation into yesterdays incident. They will conduct a thorough independent review of the incident and make their findings public in the coming weeks or months. Earlier today, i tasked the city administrator rashad young as our point of contact with the National Transportation safety board. Well have more highlights from mayor bowsers News Conference and other new developments as well coming up for you on abc 7 news at 5 00. Meanwhile there are some service add adjustments if youre riding the rails this afternoon. Those trains will run through rosalynn. Trains on the regular blue line will be departing every 12 minutes. Silver line trains run every 12 minutes. Orange line running every eight minutes and green line trains will be running normal service which is every six minutes. There are no changes on the red line. So abc 7s brad bell caught up with some passengers this morning as they dealt with all these changes. On the orange line today its business as usual. Trains come and go. Riders read, nap or listen to their headphones. Didnt have any second thoughts today. I think that i would guess more people die in car crashes every year. But less than 24 hours after the smoke on a train in the Lenfant Plaza station killed a woman and sent more than 80 to hospitals, some do have questions. It makes me wonder when i ride the train. The commuter steve fair says it took metro too long to get victims to safety. Why didnt the authorities respond . It was clear people were in distress. And that lives might be lost. Others wonder about the system itself. Im skeptical. To be entirely on i have to ride the subway every day. A number of people tell us they havent heard what happened on metro. They ride it every day and dont give it a second thought. On the orange line brad bell, abc 7 news. All right, brad. Thank you. So this year marks 39 years since metro first opened. And some of the original rail cars are still in service today. The National Transportation safety board recommended several changes in the wake of that 2009 crash on metros red line including phasing out those 1,000 series cars. Our question of the day is asking how do you feel about riding metro . And were going to share a few of your comments from the wjla Facebook Page coming up soon in about 20 minutes. Car on the road is a classic, dont know if you can say that about a train you ride every day, you know . Exactly. Very good point. Yeah. Tomorrow mornings commute could get a little slippery because we got another batch of Winter Weather that is heading toward our area. Wrong time for this to happen once again. Doug hill has the word on it. Start you off with some headlines from the storm watch 7 Weather Center to show you what were watching and what were concerned about tomorrow morning. A light mix of snow or sleet begin at 4 00 or 5 00 in the morning with temperatures below freezing. While the accumulations are going to be mainly south and east of the city the entire area will have to deal with the effect of a little bit of frozen stuff on cold ground. There are no advisories posted for any part of the area yet. Our local futurecast model shows in blue early tomorrow morning, a little bit of snow indicated in blue over the Southern Suburbs and towards the Northern Neck and lower bay. That should quickly move out with afternoon sunshine. So it will be short lived and the system can take a little swipe at us and well get back to a nice weather pattern. In the process, the top of the end may be a trace to an inch and maybe an inch or two with sleet mixed in and snow south and east in pink. This is top end and were only giving a 50 50 shot because the system is so weak and simply not going to hit the area but just take a swipe at the area as it goes byo the south and east. There it is a wintry mix. Briefly four or five hours early in the morning and brightened skies. Highs near 32. How about a 50 degree temperature in the sevenday outlook. Well share that with you in a few minutes. Alison . Thank you. Fairfax county police say a youth hockey coach posed as 13yearold girl to engage in an online relationship with another minor. That apparently is not the case in seattle where a dog is taking matter into his own paws to get to the dog park. All right. We heard about this and so did Lindsey Cohen and shen a bus to see it for herself and now that story is trending. Of the tens of thousands of riders metro transit moves each day, few are greeted by a smile when they slobber on the sea shes a person. All the bus drivers know her. Meet eclipse, a black Lab Mastiff Mix who, like human riders uses seattles buses to get around. She often roams the aisles of the d line looking for a seat and will hop up next to a stranger which makes perfect sense for a dog who rides the bus alone. Gets on and off herself. It was almost unbelievable to local d. J. Miles montgomery. I thought man oh man, this is nuts. He snapped a selfie with the dog after seeing her solo ride first hand. So the dog gets off at the stop at the dog park and gets off the bus. I look out the window and im like did that just happen . This dog didnt start out riding the bus alone by herself. Like most free things in this world, it happened on accident. Shes been urbanized totally. Shes a bus riding sidewalk walkingwalk ing dog. The dog actually belongs to the owner jeff young who says it started with constant trips together to the dog park in bell tower before getting to the bus in their apartment, jeff would stop to smoke. If the bus was there before he was done eclipse would take off without him. Get separated and gets on the bus w me and i catch up with her at the dog park. A dog amidst humans is canine among commuters proving even Public Transit apparently has gone to the dogs. She makes everybody happy. How can you not love her . In seattle, Lindsey Cohen. A spokesperson for seattles metro transit say they love that eclipse is a big supporter of Public Transit but adds shed be much safer if she had her owner on a leash. How about that . What a story. I love it. All right. The Transportation Safety board unveiled the 2015 most wanted list to make the roads, rails and skies safer this year. And do whatever it takes to make mass transit safer. Of course, the ntsb is investigating yesterdays fire on metro here. Well, lets talk about the weather now because this has got a lot of people talking. Here we go again in the morning. It seems like the biggest problems are the smaller systems and thats a possibility tomorrow. And i stress possibility because were not convinced its actually going to happen. It could and well explain why. But i think what were looking at is a possibility of 4 00 or 5 00 in morning a little snow or sleet falling on cold roadway surfaces and temperatures from 18 to 25 degrees, that in itself is enough to cause some problems much lets get you started what were seeing right now, plenty cold right now. Lots of areas below freezing already in the upper 20s. A little warm air is expected at Reagan National where its 34. Advance yet through the system.
