We can tell you we just happened to be around the corner here, dougs parents, he is from california, his father, mother, siblings were all here and they just happened to stop by the house today to drop off a tshirt for his mom. He was calm, cool, and collected. He will look around at the fans, at the 40,000 plus people who will be here today, take a look, soak it in, and then get down to business and that business is very important today as it is do or die time here at at t park for the Washington Nationals. Reporting live in San Francisco, suzanne kennedy, abc 7 news. All right. Thanks, suzanne. Shes right. It is do or die time. It is. Game time starts at 7 05 p. M. Eastern time an hour away. About an hour and six minute away here. This is a fivegame series. Whoever wins that has the advantage in this thing. The nats the Biggest Surprise in baseballs postseason. They had the best september in the league. They are 02 in october and the giants have them on the verge of elimination. The nationals are on the field right now. Were an hour away from the first pitch. To survive and advance the nats have to win three straight and in the red hot month of september the nats won only three straight against one team and that was the marlins. Horace holmes is in San Francisco. What is the mood of the team . I know youve been with them. What are they saying . Theyre very loose and very upbeat. They just finished batting practice just a couple minutes ago. Went into the cub house. You can see behind me on the field the field crew getting the field ready for the game coming up in just about an hour. Now, the team got into San Francisco yesterday. They were able to get some rest. Got in a short practice. Make no mistake. The nats are ready. We talked with Matt Williams a few moments ago. He said hes satisfied his team is up to the challenge. There is no need to have a team meeting. Everybody understands where were at and whats at stake. And, you know, for todays game, i encourage them to go out and let her fly like we always do. And, you know, and do things we do that got us here. Theres no need to try to change things now. The places we played well at this year have been the places that come out and try to get all over us and its our opportunity to step up. Well, they may like it out here in San Francisco, but you can see this crowd is ready and you can see that some of them have the brooms out looking for a sweep. That of course is the last thing that the nats need. Reporting live at at t park in San Francisco, Horace Holmes, abc sports. Back to you. All right. Horace. If he pitches like he did against the pirates the other night it could be a long afternoon and evening for the nationals. He has really been sharp. When he said just let her fly thats what they should have done in the first two games. I thought the nationals were tight. They played like they were the inexperienced ball club which they are. More bad news. The giants are 81 in elimination games and bochy is an outstanding manager who has won two world series the last years. Been there before. Absolutely. The whole thing is that they just got to hit. Both games, hes fired up. Ill take the blame because every time i show up. The thing is, why did they suddenly stop knowing how to hit . Well, that and why Matt Williams a rookie manager pulled Jordan Zimmerman when he was pitching a game perhaps every good as his no hitter. He was sharp as could be. Two outs to take him out and then drew storen again. Here we go the full season. We thought hed exorcised the demons and theyre right back. They are not out of it but they are up against it. The redskins are home tonight taking on the seahawks. Dealing with the maryland weather. Lets check in with chief meteorologist doug hill to see what the weather looks like for both games tonight. First game first. The nationals and the giants, San Francisco the past four or five days a recordsetting early october heat but the heat broke last night. Its absolutely gorgeous. Clear skies, temperatures, lower 70s we expect for game time. A little bit of breeze off the water. Now for the redskins, tonight it looks like ideal football weather. Clear skies will give way to some increasing cloudiness during the mid and late evening. Temperatures will fall through the 60s. There and landover, across the area there could be scattered showers in the overnight as you watch the frontal zone approach from the west. There are a few heavier showers north and west of roanoke, south and east of charleston, west virginia. But most of that will move to the northwest of the metro area. Scattered showers definitely in the forecast. Our temperatures delightful now. Low to mid 70s. Thats it. Increasing clouds. Should be a beautiful sunset this evening. Then some overnight showers. Well be back ontrack to a pretty pleasant weather day for the day tomorrow. Lets hope sports fans are having a pleasant day by tomorrow morning, too. You got that right, buddy. All right. Thank you. All right. So how much optimism is there out there among us all about the nationals chances of advancing to the next round . Hopefully a lot. We continue our team coverage. Hes been monitoring our Facebook Page and joins us with what nats fans are saying tonight. Hi, kendis. The conversation online has transitioned from what the heck was Matt Williams thinking to lets hope we can pull off a win. We posed the question on our Facebook Page. Do you think the Washington Nationals can win today . One of those responding said, oh, the battled in a cold weather environment that made Nationals Park hitterunfriendly. San francisco will be 80 plus degrees today. It may sound strange but nats have a better chance of winning in San Francisco because of the weather. That make sense, doug . Not so much. Okay. So much for that theory. How about this . David russell says, i hope so. The o like the capitals. They get to the playoffs and knock off in the first or second round. At least the caps are consistent with that. And this one says, i believe but i also believe in ufos. I want to believe. There you go. Conversation still online on our Facebook Page. Shes honest at least. Okay. Kendis, thank you. The Baltimore Orioles swept detroit. Theyre now back in maryland. The os now advance to the American League championship and will face the kansas city royals. No word on times for that series just yet. So this leads us to the question of the day. We want to know at this point right now, are you more excited about the Washington Nationals or the Baltimore Orioles . Go to our Facebook Page and weigh in. Coming up well reveal a few of your answers. Right now lets get to the other big story of the day the u. S. Supreme court appeals, regarding the ban of same sex marriages. The decision targeted appeals in utah, oklahoma, indiana, and wisconsin. Jeff goldberg is live outside the Arlington County courthouse with more on the story. Jeff, what are we hearing now about whats happening next or what is expected to happen next . Are couples lining up in virginia to get married now . Yeah. In fact, weve already seen it. Arlington, richmond, alexandria, all over the commonwealth. Clerks of county courts are allowed to start issuing same sex marriage licenses about 1 00 this afternoon. Then just after 2 00 we did see a couple get married here in arlington. They said it was a moment they had been waiting for for quite sometime. We talked about this a lot. Yeah. Weve been trying to figure out a way to plan our wedding in other states so we took the opportunity to marry in our own state. That was Jennifer Millsap and erica turner of centreville. Theyve been together for four years and when they heard the news today about the Supreme Court they wanted to make their marriage a reality as soon as possible so they came to arlington to make it happen. Same sex marriages again happening across the commonwealth today. The Supreme Courts decision to not issue a ruling on the ending cases in five states, delays a final ruling for all 50 states but seands message the court is comfortable with same sex marriages moving forward in states where it has been affirmed a number that now totals 30. The attorney general making it very clear today that clerks throughout the commonwealth of virginia must issue same sex marriage licenses whether they agree with the policy or not. At 5 00 well hear from the attorney general and also opponents of gay marriage who say the fight is far from over. Until then live at arlington, jeff goldberg, abc 7 news. Thank you. Todays decision means same sex marriage is now legal in 30 states and the district of columbia. Well have much more on the Ground Breaking ruling and the reaction to it from other couples racing to the courthouse now. Well have that coming up on abc 7 news at 5 00 and 6 00 tonight. Meanwhile, leon, search teams continue to follow fresh leads and scour private property for missing uva student hannah graham. Right now they are focusing on any sign of the teen such as a shoe or cell phone in hopes it leads them to her location. The Fairfax County native has been missing since september 13th. The Charlottesville Police chief says they will not stop looking for graham until she is found. Jesse matthew jr. Is charged in her disappearance. Coming up on abc 7 news at 4 00, new twists and turns in the Ebola Outbreak. The new fears fwrow. Plus the local author who has sold millions of books now in trouble with the irs. Well go to redskins park and get a preview of tonights game. Weve been talking about the nats this afternoon but in addition to that game of course all eyes are on washington tonight for a big football game. Thats rite. The redskins take on the super bowl champions tonight as the Seattle Seahawks are going to be here in town. Thats right. We would love to exact some revenge on them for what happened last time they were here. Its always a bigger game of course because theyre champs and when the champs are in town everybody is all geeked up. Barbara burton is live at fedex field to look at what the seahawks can expect from the skins tonight. Hey, robert. Everybody trying to get up for this game. Kind of hard to get excited for this one. Its the same situation as the thursday game against the giants. Were talking about primetime. The only thing is primetime hasnt been that nice to the redskins in the past. In fact, theyve lost the past six primetime games. We have a graphic to show you. Those past scores, in fact on a monday in september the eagles beat the redskins 3327 following that on a sunday in october. The cowboys got them, 3116. Then on a thursday in november. Vikings, 34, redskins, 27. Then on a monday in november, 49ers got the redskins, 276. Sunday, in december, giants 24, redskins 17. And then we all remember this one, thursday, september 25th, giants come in and beat the redskins, 4514. We talked to fullback durill young and he says these primetime games have to change. Coming off a loss like that is embarrassing. We lost the last couple. We were talking and the last game we won on primetime was the cowboys in 2012. You know, deciding if we were going to the playoffs or not. I think looking at that we got to do something about it. We got to make people believe in us. First we got to believe in ourselves. Going out there, everyone is beatable. We just got to go out there and believe we can do it. Live from fedex, robert burton, abc 7 sports. All right. Good deal. Thanks, robert. Well hope for the best out there tonight. Are redskins fans a trashy bunch . The people who live in these houses think so. They are between the metro station and fedex field and they say game night can be a nightmare because when the game is over and the people leave, they come marching up the squawk the sidewalk and they throw their garbage everywhere. People who live here say theyre loud, obnoxious, they have seen fights, and they want something to change. Im brad bell. Coming up at 5 00 well tell you what the Police Department says theyre doing about it. All right. Well see that in just a bit. Okay. Lets find out how the weather is shaping up for the week. Generally a pretty pleasant week until we hit friday and then maybe not so pleasant. Lets talk about this day. It is fantastic. Gorgeous. Clear skies. This is chesapeake beach, maryland on the Chesapeake Bay in northern calvert county. Crystal clear skies but you see a lot of white caps on the bay. Had some pretty gusty winds through the day coming up out of the south right at the bay so very choppy waters near shore. 74 degrees in the district right now. Winds are fairly light at the moment. Around 2 Miles Per Hour out of the southwest. 71 degrees is right now in vienna. Winds a little stronger there at 10 Miles Per Hour out of the south. These winds kind of forcing out of the south and southeast ahead of a frontal zone that will come through tonight. Because of that were receiving milder air. 77 now at Reagan National airport. 72 at winchester and dulles. 77 fredericksburg. 69 degrees the effect of the winds coming across the seven river, annapolis, Naval Academy cooling them down to 69 degrees. The wind directions, last check, generally out of the south, southsoutheasterly but the winds right now sustained winds 29 Miles Per Hour in annapolis. 16 at washington. 18 at quantico. So a breezy evening here but comfortable with temperatures in the upper 60s, mid 70s. Late tonight, clouds will roll in overnight. There could be a few showers. 49 to 57 degrees by morning as this frontal zone pushes through. A lot of rain. A lot of it will be scrubbed out by the mountains and move into pennsylvania. Definitely later tonight and overnight some showers. It leads to this. Left over clouds at the bus stop in the morning. Cooler. Behind the system mid 50s for the kids. Then late morning, mid morning, close to 70 degrees with some sunshine. Then in the afternoon clouds increasing. Temperatures in the 70s. There may be a shower west of the metro area but the better chance of any showers will be later tomorrow evening and tomorrow night. There you have it. All right. His Helicopter Rescue cost tens of thousands of dollars, which, you know, also reignites the whole debate about whether thrill seekers like this should pay for these kinds of rescues. Right. And the people who are put in danger to try and rescue him and the helicopters and such. Great risk. If you do Something Like that you should sign a waiver saying im on my own. Right. You lived in d. C. For sometime. Tell me about that. I did. I was living in Northern Virginia in alexandria for about five years and just moved to San Francisco earlier this year. But still a nats fan. Still a nats fan and representing proudly today. Tell me about you were here for an earlier game during the regular season. What was that like . Yeah. I came out for the fourgame series we had here. The nats came out earlier this year. We won three in a row. Hoping we can do it again against the giants. The satellite image for the past couple hours shows how quickly that band of clouds and showers are advancing from west to east across the alleganys and appalachians toward our area. Most of the heavier, steadier showers will pivot up to the north through pennsylvania i think but scattered showers possible in our forecast area later this evening and especially in the overnight hours. In fact, our future cast computer model takes it a step further simulating what may happen atmospherically around midnight with a few scattered showers and then a bit of a break toward sunrise. Break out with some sunshine for the morning and then in the afternoon and evening hours it looks like the next system will take a swipe at us and possibly bring you more showers to the area. Prayers for a 9yearold boy who was shot in the head and here in a community after gunfire broke out at the mayfair complex in northeast friday night. We were having a problem with crowds gathering on this parking lot. It was around 9 00 p. M. Police sources explained a car pulled into one of the parking lots. Men got out and started firing at the crowd. At least one person in that crowd fired back. Two men were wounded. You cant have your kids outside playing. Its sad. One of the flying bullets hit the 9yearold boy who was also outside at the time. The gunshot wound to the head so Critical Police did not wait for an ambulance and raced the little boy to the county Hospital Center themselves. He was then medevacced to Childrens Hospital where he went into emergency surgery. Hes fighting. Hes strong. Its a ghost town here. Everybody is scared. We fear for our lives. Another flying bullet meant for someone else. Its hard to get back to society. Right now i suffer from depression due to the gunshot. You know what im saying . And i fear for being around people. You know, its hard to trust people nowadays. Now all thoughts turn to a 9yearold who is in a fight for his young life. Hes always happy. Es always moving. He wants to be around people. We are just praying. This little boys mother has been at the hospital, mother and father at the hospital since friday night. Right now no charges. Both men were wounded, two adult males. Were talking about usa swimming announcement that Michael Phelps will not be allowed to swim competitively for six months. A sixmonth suspension. It also means he will not be taking part in the 2015 world championships. All of this on the heels of that second d. U. I. Arrest last tuesday in the Baltimore Area where he failed field sobriety tests, reportedly had a blood alcohol level well beyond the legal limit of. 308. He later tweeted he was going to enter a sixmonth Treatment Program for drinking. Huge news. Big, disappointing news for fans of arguably one of the most heralded swimmers in olympic history. Okay. Well, keep us posted on any developments and reaction on that story, scott. Thank you. Meanwhile, we switch gears now to this. A local author who sells millions of copies of racey novels is allegedly in trouble now with the irs. Now she is known as zane and one of her novels is being turned into a movie right now. The Prince Georges County resident appeared on news channel 8s lets talk live today. Thursday will mark the career highlight of this local author. She is known as zane as you mentioned. The movie based on her novel addicted hits theaters. Guess what, folks . She broke. She is broke. Flat broke. Hard to believe. When you think about this, not only is it a big studio production, zane has sold millions of books. She produces two cinemax series not to mention residuals from the film yet filed for bankruptcy this summer. She said she had 400 in her checking account, 51 in her savings and owes hundreds of thousands of dollars in back taxes. It happens. Conversation continues on our Facebook Page. Welcome to the club. Exactly. Weve all been there. All right. Thank you. Still ahead here on abc 7 news at 4 00 city workers showed up at anacostia today with a truck to haul away an art exhibit piece by piece. Im sam ford. The story is coming up on abc 7 news. Dont forget our question of the day. At this point which team are you more excited about, the nationals or the the art exhibit condemned by the d. C. Fire department is now a thing of the past. Thats right. Last week we told you about this project. It was really meant to bring art to the anacostia neighborhood, but many people mistook the exhibit for an abandoned building. Kind of easy to see how you could make that mistake. Only on 7 tonight sam ford was there as the project was being removed and he is now live in anacostia to tell us what happened. Sam, whats the latest there . Well, the controversial art exhibit that cost d. C. Taxpayers some 20,000 is history. The tree limbs, boards, and old tires that made up the exhibit that the artist called the new migration was hauled out piece by piece today. Her stuff was taken out in Bucket Brigade style by city workers to a truck bound for the dump after the d. C. Fire Department Last week deemed the exhibit a fire hazard. The main reason the exhibit was condemned was that residents and politicians in anacostia hated it. The exhibit in a blighted neighborhood showing more blight hit a nerve. Im not saying that this art doesnt mean something to someone and somewhere but it doesnt show contrast here in the district of columbia. Perhaps if it had been placed somewhere else and the buildings were already developed, we wouldnt have had such a great concern. With it being blighted the a c commissioner says she hopes the whole controversy makes the city pay more attention to these two buildings that have remained abandoned for a long time and, in fact, are quite ugly. She said shed like to see at least something happen to them to butte if i the buildings. Coming up on abc 7 news at 5 00 well talk to more of the residents and hear from the Council Member over here, marion barry, who actually engineered the exhibits demise.
