This is the locomotive of the illfated train 188 and tonight that is the focal point of the investigation, specifically what was going on inside the engineerss cab just before the crash. Stunning news less than 24 hours after seven people are killed, more than 100 hurt in a crash of amtrak train 188. The seven car train sent flying off a corner was screaming at long screaming along at more than twice the safe speed limit. The engineer reacted to slowly to recover. The maximum speed on this curve was 50 Miles Per Hour. When the engineer in deuced brake application, the train was traveling at approximately 106 Miles Per Hour. Brad the locomotive and all seven cars derailed. 238 passengers and five crew members sent flying. It seem to go around the curve fast, too fast for the cars to stay on the track and it went flying. Brad by midmorning, the investigation is well underway the trains black box analyzed, suspicions of speeding confirmed. The engineer has a lawyer and has not spoken to investigators. They say they know it may take a few days, but we can also tell you this the engineer was brought into a Philadelphia Police precinct today, being reported that he left without giving an interview, in the company of a lawyer. He was shocked at how intense the scene was common also concerned. He said that the whole thing could have been prevented. A top ntsb official said had the tpc system been in place, this was preventable. The system congressman boyle mentioned is something designed to prevent highspeed train derailments. That is in place on many spots of the eastern corridor, but not here in philadelphia. That has raised a lot of questions. We dug into the history of accidents with amtrak. Since 2006, safety records show 37 accidents happening on just this str rail in philadelphia. That is 15 derailments, but no deaths or injuries. Still, this bend where this happened has been on the radar for change for decades. As far back as 1901, over 100 years, officials had been talking about making plans to eliminate that curve. Tonight, those questions and concerns still remain, but we are also learning more about the people who died in philadelphia. More stories are emerging about the seven lives that have been lost. Three of them we know more about this evening. One was a journalist, one was a navy midshipmen. Jay korff has how those lives are being remembered. Jay most people who had a loved one on board amtrak 188 say they know the fate of that person. For one maryland family, they are going through an agonizing ordeal. This 55yearold, an avid sports enthusiast and neighbor, lived in this home. Wells fargo, his present employer, confirmed his death calling his loss a tragedy. We have also learned that a 20yearold midshipmen at the Naval Academy in annapolis was among those who did not survive. His mother, susan. This tragedy has struck us in the worst way.
