right now, in arlington, 63 degrees. a lot of lightning flashes. they have been out there all evening, but slowly moving eastward. th are in frederick county. severe thunderstorm warnings until 11:34 frederick county. that threat is diminishing right now out in washington county. there will be more chances the next few hours for showers and storms. we expect most of them to be garden variety. the rainfall totals are impressive. the good news is, it will taper off overnight. >> we have several developments in the big story we mentioned at the top. the prince george's county police department is in morning to night after losing one of their own. police are talking about the crash and officer kevin bowden. >> we were over the scene where it happened in clinton. we were first on the scene of this crash. >> the accident reconstruction team has wrapped up its work at this intersection. investigators spent hours going over the same piece by piece. we know this young officer got offered around 1:00 this afternoon and was driving his take-home cruiser when he lost his life. officer kevin bowden was a six- year veteran of the prince george's county police department just 28 years old and a father of two. people who never even knew him came to pay their respects. >> this is devastating. >> that is terrible. >> the accident happened just after 3:00 in the afternoon. the off-duty officer was headed northbound on branch avenue when his cruiser collided with an suv, forcing his car into a light pole. >> witnesses said the officer was cut off. we're looking into that. >> the driver of the suv survived with non-life- threatening injuries. the officer did not. it was a heartbreaking scene outside the hospital. dozens of greeting officers saluting as one of their own was taken no -- a grieving officers saluting as one of their own was taken away. >> this is the second death we have had in two months in reference to traffic accidents. >> we do not know the speed of either of the vehicles. we do not know if speed was a factor. we expect to get more answers tomorrow morning at a news conference at 11:30. >> thank you very much. prince george's county executive released a statement which reads -- adrian morris died in august when he lost control of his cruiser. two men face felony theft charges from that. >> we're also learning about our other big store -- story of the day. a man threw a molotov cocktail at the ballston commons mall in arlington. we spoke with witnesses. >> this was an incident that was only a few hours. police say based on observant citizens, they were able to address to the person of the interest quickly and easily. those inside during this scary situation are giving us a firsthand account. >> dramatic cellphone video captures the moment arlington county police take down the man they say brought the mall to a standstill today. >> the cops came over and they handcuffed him down. >> the man was wanted for the molotov cocktail chaos that disrupted the lunch time crunch -- rush. bottles were hurled into the food court as patron sat eating. it was meant to tonight and said of a fireball, but did not. -- sets off a fireball,
