Since saturday night weve seen several businesses and multiple vehicles go up in flames. Some businesses looted. Police officers and squad cars have had bricks. Bullets. And other objects directed at them. And gunshots rang out through the neighborhoods. Deandra corinthios joining us live from sherman park right now. She has more on how the tensions in the neighborhood have subsided overnight a much different night than the a curfew was in effect overnight. And Milwaukee Police chief ed flynn credits faith and community leaders. As well as the restraint from his officers. In keeping the neighborhood calmer and safer Milwaukee Police were prepared monday night into Tuesday Morning for more violence. There were a large number of foot officers available. But chief flynn says things played out better which just half a dozen arrests and far fewer clashes wi crowds. The arrests took place around 6 pm. When the sherman park closed. Chief flynn and mayor tom barrett both. Commended faith leaders and Community Members for spreading a message of peace. They say so far. Angelica joins us from the newsroom with more on his criminal record. 23yearold Sylville Smith had never been convicted of a felony. But hed been charged with three of them. Including one for theft of 16hundred dollars in dvds from a south side walmart. A second felony charge came from a felony charge for allegedly tampering with a witness in the shooting case. But all three felony charges were dismissed. Smiths sister says he was not a bad guy. this brother that yall talking about is the sweetest brother i got. The other ones, i probably would believe that, cause they meaner. My other brothers are mean. Sylville is the sweetest brother i have this man wouldnt fight a fly. smiths only criminal conviction came in 2014 for carrying a without a permit. Which is a misdemeanor. His sister says he always had a gun on him for safety. Weve also learned sylville and the officer who shot and killed him. Who is also a black man. Actually went to the same high school. His sister says they both went to pulaski. Milwaukee police are not releasing the name of the officer saying threats have been made against him. Smiths sister says shes skeptical of the investigation. If my brother did have his gun in his hand, why he didnt shoot back . If hes gonna go with a big bang . The decision to release body camera footage from the shooting rests with the Wisconsin Department of justice. They have not indicated when that video will be made public. But each one o help others. Their loved ones say, the unrest over the weekend made for an especially meaningful ceremony. i think were a little more nervous, because it is a great risk as they said. But i do think that hes positive and were hopeful that he will be safe. the new recruits will take part in 6 months of intense training at the february.
