Are two body camera videos from the officers at the scene. Mayor tom barrett said last week he was shown one still from body camera video and in it, he saw a gun in smiths hand. Schimel says he would not have shared that information publicly but adds he understands why barrett did it because he was trying to calm down the situation. We asked schimel why the doj wont release that still image the mayor was able to see. The way the gun is positioned, the position of mr. Smith when the officer made his decision to discharge his weapon, all of those things are part of that releasing more than what they mayor has stated, i believe, could compromise the integrity of the investigation. A spokesman for the das office would not comment on todays press conference. As for a timeline, there were no specifics but schimel said he believes a charging decision will come faster than it did in the dontre hamilton case in 2014. That took about six months. Smiths sister has told fox 6 her brother knew the officer adding they went to high school together. However, Milwaukee Public Schools says there are no records of the two ever attending the same high school. Schimel would not comment on whether smith and the officer investigators are looking into that too. We are piecing together detailed histories for both the officer and mr. Smith to determine if there is any preexisting relationship that may have affected the events that day. Schimel confirms some of the state investigators on this case are retired from mpd. He does not see that as a conflict on interest because theres no direct relationship to the officers involved
