The siton unfolding in milwaukee is making headlines all across the country. Video from overnight shows fires burning at several local buildings. Other businesses were broken into and looted, as police in riot gear work to contain crowds of people. All of this has been taking place in the same general neighborhood, near sherman and burleigh. But heres a map showing some of the other main locations in the surrounding area. We are staying on the air this morning with continuing coverage. We have a team of crews covering we want to get you caught up with what happened overnight. Multiple buildings were set on fire. Including, a b. P. Gas station, Oreilly Auto Parts, Bmo Harris Bank, jet Beauty Supply, and pjs supermarket. Firefighters could not get to those fires right away, because of security concerns. Thats because police say shots were being fired all across the neighborhood. At the same time as those fires other businesses were broken into, and looted. At least one car was set on fire. Three squad cars were damaged. One officer was injured when a brick was thrown at a squad car windshield. Weve learned that multiple people were arrested during all of this, overnight. As of midnight, mayor tom barrett said 3 people were arrested. Our crews across the neighborhood saw at least two other people also being taken into custody in the hours afterwards. Its been a busy morning for firstresponders. Milwaukee police say they have restored order to the areas involved. Our live coverage starts with the mayor was joined by four aldermen at about midnight. A came as the fires were still burning about 10 blocks away. This started with a car fire and a squad fire escalating to the bp gas station that has been the site of numerous protests the owners son fired shots to disperse the crowd he considered threatening. Six building fires and all. Numerous shots were fired, including in the area of the responding firefighters, which means they had to stay back for a time while several properties the use of social media to get additional people to the scene was amazing, how such a short period of time how many people showed up. Police estimated at its peak there were about 800 protesters. The chief stressed most of them came from other areas, not from that sherman park neighborhood. Other Business Owners in that neighborhood are also waking up to check their buildings. That includes a Beauty Supply store and an Auto Parts Store near fond du lac and burleigh. Now that the sun is coming up and daylight is more prevalent now, we can see more of the in, where the flames ripped through the awnings and so forth. Video from last night, what it looks like when fire crews were trying to get a handle on this. They had buckets elevated above the building. They were drenching the building, trying to get it under control. There waal nearby at the supermarket. People in that area are devastated by what they are saying. I see they are tearing up the streets, doing damage, it is sad. It is real said. People did not raise their kids you have kids doing whatever they want to do, selling drugs, disrespecting people. It is not right. A look at 44th and burleigh. Crews got that fire under control before midnight. Next of that was where the b moe harris bank, there was a fire there. Of the intersection. Last night, fire crews responding to it. They did not open this area until around 4 00. You can see traffic flowing freely through this part of the neighborhood. Overnight, we got an update from milwaukee mayor tom barrett and other city leaders about the efforts to get things under control. Where people have lived for a long time and officers will work to make sure families are safe. We are asking every resident of this community to do everything they can to help us restore order. That means, parents of young people, there are a lot of young people congregating home now before more damage is done. We are going to stay on this. Restoring kong was the theme of the restoring calm was the theme of the press conference. We are calling on everyone to help restore calm in these neighborhoods. We understand the frustration that many people feel with the Police Community relation situation that is happening nationally. What we want to be able to do is gather the information. When we get information, we are going to share it with the public. There is to hide. We want to make sure information is going out in a timely manner. We have to go through the process of finding justice. We have to be able to restore order to these neighborhoods. Think about the neighborhood these situations are happening in. Lets go ahead and pull up video from news chopper 12. Matt salemme spotted two different bus shelters that were knocked over and tossed into the street. This was near sherman and burleigh. In that same neighborhood, a large commercial dumpster was also flipped sideways in the Ben Hutchison tweeted out video of officers picking up the dumpster and one of the dumpsters being moved away. And smoke is still rising from the bp gas station. Wisn 12 news had crews outside mayfair mall in wauwatosa around 2 00 this morning. Police were set up at every building entrance. Officials tell us they received threats about the mall on social media and they responded to the mall as a precaution. As though there were any actual incidents there. During the overnight unrest, we learned that one officer was injured. But multiple squad cars were also damaged during the situation. The Milwaukee Police department tweeted a photo. You can see the vehicles windshield was smashed. This was near sherman and auer. Police say at least three squads were damaged. Two of them had broken windows. An officer was hurt when a brick went through the window. Another squad car was set on fire. Milwaukee police is the main agency hin from overnight. But several other agencies were called in to help them, including the Milwaukee CountySheriffs Office. The Sheriffs Office emailed us with information about their response. They say deputies are assisting. The email went on to say, quote, shots fired, buildings on fire, objects thrown at law enforcement. Shifts extended to be on scene, state patrol assisting on freeway to allow those patrol deputies to be at the moving scene. By subjects at scene. Bearcat deployed. Deputies will remain on scene to assist in restoring order, end quote. Overnight the coalition for justice sent out this tweet encouraging people to clean up from last nights mess. They plan to meet at sherman park at 8 00 a. M. To pray, clean, and hit the streets. The unrest started with yesterdays officerinvolved shooting near 44th and auer. That shooting happened around 3 30 in the afternoon. Milwaukee Police Say Two suspects ran away from officers during the chase, one of the officers saw one of the suspects, a 23yearold, had a gun. The officer fired on that man. The man died at the scene. A large crowd gathered while police investigated and started yelling at officers. The department of criminal investigations is now investigating. The officer, a 24yearold, was not hurt and has been placed on administrative duty. The other suspect was taken into now. Police say a social media call for protesters after the Fatal Police Shooting of a suspect armed with a handgun led to some 800 people at its peak. Vehicle fires spread to a gas station, and five other businesses before the night was out. Gunfire in the area of the fires led police to keep firefighters back for a time, leading to even more damage, until police were able to restore order with the help of three swat vehicles from milwaukee, Milwaukee County, and Waukesha County. We have our supervisors paying close attention to the calls for service in the rest of the city. We still have officers patrolling the rest of the city. Firefighters were not able to find that fire right away due to gunshots ringing out in the area. Crews were able to save the other buildings in the area. Patrick a fatal officerinvolved shooting and then fires, violence, and arrests in a milwaukee neighborhood in the hours that followed. The damage overhead at sherman and burleigh. There were six fires last night primarily in the sherman park , neighborhood. This fires followed a fatal officerinvolved shooting, saturday afternoon, in the area. That is a b. P. Gas station burned to the ground. Ben hutchison has been on this story all morning. Thema he also covered yesterdays officerinvolved shooting that police say may have sparked this. Ben is live near the b. P. Gas station at sherman and burleigh, and with the sun up this morning, we can see the extent of that damage. Ben thema and patrick, we w First Time Since police left the area about a half hour ago. Take a look at the building. You can actually smell the results of the fire and the rubble. The roof completely collapsed in. The entire building is a total loss year the gas station. We continue to look to the left here, you can see these three cars that are totally burned out. A lot people are gathering out here right now, taking pictures. Shocked by what happened. And they are not happy about it. A live around here and they say its an embarrassment to see this type of thing happen here in milwaukee. Thats not how they want to be seen by other people. We do have a view from above, you can probably get a better look at this corner here at sherman and burleigh and what it really looks like. You can probably see right through to the ground with all the rubble and everything with the building. Its truly completely destroyed out here.
