It was also the most tweeted one ever. 17 million related tweets sent during the hour and half. The buildup to the debate tape capturing trumps lewd comments. Look at this. Nods from the candidates. No handshake. Two people who did, the spouses. Melania trump and bill clinton. And there was that moment early on, trump threatening clinton with jail if elected. We have never seen anything close to that before. And as expected, both sides claiming victory. Both were celebrating once the event ended. All smiles after the showdown. Our Martha Raddatz joins us. Lets start with jon karl. For this campaign, last nights debate represented a new low. This was the nastiest, meanest, most personal president ial debate we have ever seen. Reporter even before the first words were spoken, that nonhandshake made history. In a president ial debate. From there, it got ugly. Over an 11yearold video that rocked the trump campaign. You bragged that you have sexually assaulted women. Do you understand that . No, i didnt say that at all. I dont think you understood what was said. This was locker room talk. Im not proud of it. I apologized to my family. I apologized to the american people. Certainly im not proud of it. Reporter clinton speaking out on the tape for the first time. He has said that the video i think its clear to anyone who heard it that it represents exactly who he is. Its just words, folks. Its just words. Reporter and after days of buildup, trump went there. Dredging up bill clintons sex scandals. Even inviting clintons accusers to sit in the front row. You can say it any way you want to say it, but bill clinton was abusive to women. If i win, im going to instruct my attorney general to get a special prosecutor to look into your situation. And so please you didnt delete them . Allow her to respond please. Those were personal emails not official well, we turned over 35,000. What about the other 15,000 . Please allow her to respond. I would like to get to the questions that the people have brought here tonight to talk us to about. And get off this question. Okay, donald. I know youre into big diversion tonight. Anything to avoid talking about your campaign and the way its republicans are leaving you. But lets at least focus on some of the issues. Lets see what happens. Reporter their first town hall encounter was a contrast in styles. Clinton taking vigorous notes from her seat. Trump pacing, glaring, sniffling. At one point, trailing clinton around. They clashed over trumps admission that he used loopholes to avoid paying taxes. Of course i do. Of course i do. She complains that donald trump well, why didnt you change it . Why didnt you change the tax code when you were senator . I was a senator with a republican president. I will be the president that gets it done. If you were an effective senator, you could have done it. Under our constitution, president s have something called id speech by clinton. Ed over a that politicians need to say one thing in public and another in private. As i recall, that was something i said about abraham after having seen the wonderful Steven Spielberg movie, i was making the point that it is hard sometimes to get the congress to do what you want to do. She lied. Now shes blaming the lie on the late, great Abraham Lincoln. Thats one that i havent heard. Okay. Honest abe. Honest abe never lied. Thats the good thing. Thats the big difference between Abraham Lincoln and you. Reporter then, a political shocker. Trump disagreeing with his running mate. Governor mike your running mate said. He said, provocations by russia need to be met with american strength, and if russia continues to be involved in air strikes along with the Syrian Government force of assad, the United States of america should be prepared to use military force to strike the military targets of the assad regime. Okay. He and i havent spoken and i disagree. Reporter the debate was defined by insults and interruptions. When the candidates were asked to name one positive thing about each other. I respect his children. His children are incredibly able. And devoted. And i think that says a lot about donald. She does fight hard. And she doesnt quit. And she doesnt give up. And i consider that to be a very good trait. Reporter those compliments finally leading to the handshake at the very end of the debate. Before the debate, trumps own running mate, mike pence, harshly criticized him for what he said on that 2005 video clip. As you heard, trump bluntly disagreed with pence during the debate. When it was all over, pence tweeted his congratulations to trump saying, quote, proud to stand with you as we make America Great again. Yeah, he put the rumors to rest. A lot of talk over the weekend about whether mike pence should go to the top of the ticket. Among top republicans, and when donald trump walked on that stage last night, his campaign crisis. Dozens of gop state officials vowing not to vote for him after that leak. Did trump do enough to stop that exodus . Reporter well, well know in a few weeks, george, good morning. Donald trump took the debate to a whole new level last night. He decided to move forward with a topsecret plan the campaign felt would divert attention from the recording scandal. Donald trump came into the a trick up his sleeve. These four very courageous women have asked to be here. And it was our honor to help them. Reporter among them, three women who have accused former president bill clinton of Sexual Assault and harassment. Theres never been anybody in the history of politics in this nation thats been so abusive to women. So you can say it any way you want to say it. But bill clinton was abusive to women. Hillary clinton attacked those same women. And attacked them viciously, four of them here tonight. Reporter clinton chose not to address the women. Putting the focus on trumps own record. We have seen him rate women on their appearance. Ranking them from 1 to 10. We have seen him embarrass women reporter but trump, who now says he supports bill clintons accusers, had a different view when clinton was in office. Look what he said in 1998. I dont necessarily agree with his victims. The victims are terrible. He is careful here. He is really a victim himself. But he put himself in that position. Reporter two of the women telling me after the debate they did not feel like they were being used by trump. Do you think donald trump used you as a pic not at all. You dont think you were there to scare Hillary Clinton . I dont feel if i felt that way, i wouldnt be here. Hillary clinton is a fake feminist. A champion of women does not attack the victims of Sexual Assault. Period. Reporter now both bill and Hillary Clinton have denied those accusations. One of the accusers told me last night after the debate, she was not paid to be there, but the travel costs were covered by the robin . Thank you very much. And the Clinton Campaign is reacting to Donald Trumps attacks overnight. And his decision to bring up and invite women who have accused bill clinton of Sexual Assault. Abcs cecilia vega also in st. I was surprised by the absolute avalanche of falsehoods. I i really find it almost unimaginable that someone can stand and just tell, you know, a falsehood after a falsehood. Jon karl mentioned this. A lot of discussion on twitter last night about how close donald trump seemed to get to Hillary Clinton on stage. What is her campaign saying about that . Reporter well, robin, theyre not letting this one go. In fact, Hillary Clinton herself said she could feel the proximity of donald trump behind her. One aide called his proximity menacingly stalking her on the stage. There was no love lost on the stage last night. You know it started without a it sure did. Cecilia, thank you. But, you know, were all talking about this. You were only a few feet from those two candidates last night. Like to be that close. Reporter well, i think first of all, george, and you have been in these situations before. You dont really know what to expect. Particularly last night, you didnt know what the candidate plans were. We knew what had happened with the Clinton Accusers right before the debate and that was right before we walked into the hall. It was that lack of a handshake from the beginning when they came together and didnt shake a long evening. We were it was very easy to see mr. Trump following secretary clinton around. You could feel that in the room. The other thing that we forget is this was a town hall. There was an audience there. There were people asking questions. Who were hearing these exchanges and they had to be somewhat surprised. I want to ask you about that, as well. You were so close to the questioners, as well. Could you sense any reaction from them to any of the big moments in the debate . Particularly the moment where being in jail . Reporter well, i think obviously, ewe were going to focus on the candidates, but when i looked around in between when the candidates were talking, people were staying very still and did not want to be on camera with any surprised looks. But i think there was a lot of surprise from the audience and what was said before that they went out there. They were nervous about who would get called on. They thought they were ready for everything. Im not sure anybody was ready r that. I think youre probably right. Let me bring in matthew dowd. This debate last night breaks new ground in president ial races. The big question 29 days out, what difference did it make . Donald trump went in behind. Did he put himself back in the race . Thats the thing. Unlike christopher columbus, theres no new world discovered in this. To start taking her chips back. In this debate, though donald trump did better than he did the last time, he didnt take a single chip from her stack. When you go into the debate with the lead and come out with the lead, that actually is a win for Hillary Clinton. His number one job last night may have simply been to stop the bleeding on the republican side after the dozens of defections over the weekend. I actually think this could be the worst Case Scenario for the Republican Party in this. Republicans from leaving. But those who didnt want to be stuck with him are stuck with him for the remainder of the campaign. You think the defections stopped for now . At least 24 hours. He was very aggressive with me. Was always trying to grope me and touch me. I had to tell him to stop. Mments. Er withdrew her ed those as part of a settlement for a separate contract dispute with him. She briefly dated him when he was separated from marla maples. Robin and george . Thank you. You have a woman who filed a lawsuit back at the time against donald trump, alleging Sexual Assault. Now, for the first time, coming out and telling her story. And no one seemed to care. I mean, i tweeted out at the time, im perplexed that this allegation is not getting more attention. That doesnt mean her story is true. There are problems with her account. The fact that she dated him afterwards. She wrote very nice emails to him after the fact. Thats fine. Thats a way to say maybe we but, this is an allegation. And to have donald trump now, bringing out all of these women, some of whoms stories are stronger than others and saying, why arent they being heard raises an issue. Flatly denied any Sexual Assault. Absolutely. At the time, he got on the phone with my reporter and started undermining the credibility of this accuser. Saying she wanted me. She was in love with me. Its all untrue. Et cetera. There is a big differ from access hollywood. Which is all the rest of it is he said, she said. The situation with the bill Clinton Accusers, too. The tape was Donald Trumps own voice talking about the things that he does with women. And that last night, he was denying his own words. You cant do that, however. We have heard them. And so, you know, unless its someone doing a really good imitation of donald trump, it huge deficit when it came to women voters. Did he do anything last night to change that . No, no. Quite the contrary. And really, the swing voters in this election, where we know where minorities are, they might not be as enthusiastic as they were four years ago. We know where the young people are. We know where single people are. The swing voters have been these collegeeducated white women who went for mitt romney by six ints. R Hillary Clinton by 25 they last night saw nothing to bring them to donald. That is a huge swing. Morngs dan morning, dan. Usa today reporting on 20 lawsuits where there are allegations of Sexual Harassment and donald trump has a history of suing. Lawnewz has done a chronicle of the lawsuits hes been involved in. There has never been anything like this where email, and you get a subpoena, you get a subpoena, and after getting the subpoena, you delete 33,000 emails. Well, we rated that mostly true. In fact, Hillary Clinton did or 33,000 of her emails were deleted just a week after she received a subpoena from the Congressional Committee investigating benghazi. Its important to point out that fbi director james comey said he did not think there was any quote, evil intent or intent to obstruct justice, which appears to be what donald trump was suggesting. And then the alleged russian hack of the dnc. Heres what donald trump said about that. Anytime anything wrong happens, they like to say the russians. She doesnt know. It might not be the russians doing the hacking. Maybe there is no hacking. They always blame russia. Community, and robin, this is the 16 intelligence agencies that make up the u. S. Intelligence Community Came out with a finding that the u. S. Intelligence community is confident thats the russian government directed the recent compromises of emails. We believe based on the scope and sensitivity of these efforts, that only russias senior most officials could have authorized these activities. Whats extraordinary is that presumably donald trump is getting these Intelligence Briefings every day. The one thing you could say is that wi that the Intelligence Community has been wrong in the past. But this is a finding without dispute. Also the latenight tweeting came up. This was the case of Alicia Machado. Days after the first debate you sent out a series of tweets from 3 00 a. M. To 5 00 a. M. Including one telling people to check out a sex tape. Is that the discipline of a good it wasnt to look at a sex tape. It was take a look at this person she built up to be a girl scout. She was no girl scout. This one is point blank false. Donald trump tweeted what anderson said. Did crooked hillary help disgusting check out sex tape and past Alicia Machado become a u. S. Citizen . So i mean, he said it word for word, and he said he didnt. What about the khan family. First of all, captain khan is an american hero. And, if i were president at that time, he would be alive today. Because unlike her, who voted for the war without knowing what she was doing, i would not have had our people in iraq. Iraq was a disaster. So he would have been alive today. Well, the khan family did its own factcheck on this saying in a statement just after the debate ended, quote, we know that our son, captain humayun khan is an american hero. War. Our son served this country with honor and sacrifice. The only thing donald sacrifices is the truth. Im going to bring in matt again. I cant believe im going to even aski you this. Does it even matter . Its been known that both sides have told flatout lies. It doesnt seem to matter. To voters. The truth has been sacrificed in the course of this campaign. I think the majority of merges want to understand the facts and want u but the majority of partisans, die hard partisans, dont seem to want to understand the facts, and thats a very troubling sign for our democracy to get to the common good. If we dont share a common set of facts and we have to keep yelling from the mountain tops, heres the facts, people dont want to hear it. That development has been growing for some time, though. Its been growing for the last 20, 25 years. The ability to get stuff done in t when you dont have a common set of facts, you cant reach consensus. Thats a problem. I cant remember the covering campaigns where they would argue with you by your fact checks and go point by point by point, and now they dont even bother. When i did campaigns, everything was footnoted with facts. They dont do that anymore. How did we get here . How did we get to this i think part of it is the average person today has 140 cable channels. They click around to get their biases confirmed. We have had a set of leaders that wont speak truth to power. They wont tell partisans youre wrong to think that. Coming up in two minutes, what everyone was talking about on twitter last night. This year, roughly 1 in 9 americans havent made up their minds. I think it was probably a draw. Hillary was very strong in terms of being prepared. Unfortunately, i thought she was very robotic. Like the candidates the least. How do the candidates reach them . You dont havent decided at this point, in this election, when will you decide . Its possible, as you heard in those sound bites from the voters, some of them are leaning one way or the other. The other direction by the trump tape. If other things come out. And actually, at the very end, when we saw that undecided voter on the stage saying, Say Something nice, trump said about Hillary Clinton, shes a fighter. Shes real fighter. That will be in ads everywhere starting today. He had questioned her stamina before. Thats exactly right. Only 29 days to go. You feel some of the undecideds may not end up voting. Not vote at all. Which campaign would be hurt most by that . Donald trumps. When youre behind, you need everything to break in your way in the final 29 days. The problem for undecided voters today as we have got on the this point. 80 to 85 of them dont like and dont trust either candidate. And theyre fixes to make a decision based on that. The likelihood is that they wont vote or theyll vote for a third party. I expect most undecideds to stay home or break for one of the other parties. The two campaigns are concentrating on their supporters. They want to motivate and make their supporters as enthusiastic as possible. This is an underappreciated fact. Especially on the democratic side. They actually know where every single voter is and where theyre leaning right now. And when we have watched these and theyre going to go get them. We have watched the campaigns. Its called microtargeting. You know the person. Neighborhood. And you know if theyre leaning heavy toward your or slightly heavy toward you. Theyre going to concentrate on that. Hillary clinton has more offices, more staff, more ability to do that. As i said, anything can break on the enthusiasm level. The other people it hurts is republicans in congress. If these voters dont show up to vote and theyre primarily republican voters, thats a problem for the downballot. Good morning, wisn 12 news time now is 8 57. We expect to learn more today about an overnight robbery near the uw milwaukee campus. The halal guys is a middleeastern restaurant on oakland avenue next to jimmy johns and dominos. A robbery was reported there around 12 45 this morning about 45 minutes after the restaurant closed for the day. Police say a suspect came up to the manager as that person was the suspect implied that he had a gun and forced the worker to go back inside and open the safe. The suspect got away with around 3,000 in cash. No one was hurt in any of this. As people in the south recover from hurricane matthew, theyre getting some help from right here in wisconsin. Red cross wisconsin has sent 55 people to help with storm recovery. One of the Emergency Response vehicles left town this morning heading to North Carolina. People in need.
