One man tells wisn 12 news hes looking for a way to help the community. A woman who doesnt even live in sherman park came up with the idea of offering free hugs and cupcakes. But across the street jet beauty , and Oreilly Auto Parts burned and are now in ruins. Stupidity, because you taking out businesses that have nothing to do with anyone else and we joyce we will go live to the police chief conference. Chief flynn i was surveying the situation myself. We have been very gratified once again with the response of Community Members to the messages being sent by the various Community Leaders and Faith Community who met with bp station. The last that went to there, some of you have been there, there were people in prayer circles and there was a vigorous barbecue going on. Which is certainly very encouraging. Over the course of the evening, we have been monitoring the situation closely and we actually deployed a little differently tonight. Last night, we were in a static situation with a large number of officers intersections, to keep them clear. As you saw last night, there was events unfolded differently. Early in the afternoon, the Faith Community responded to the Mayors Office and them along with other Community Leaders the job leaders did an excellent job in setting a positive last night left after the event and we found ourselves confronting small groups of young men and juveniles engaging in vandalism, but we were not facing a situation in which there was significant crowds or mob activity, or significant Property Damage or major arson. Certainly, it was a great deal of improvement over the first day. Again, that is a tribute to the partnership of the the restraint of the department, but certainly major responsibility goes to the community engagement. Tonight, as you can see here, we have a lot of Assets Available for rapid deployment, that was the plan. Our hope was that we would not get to a Critical Mass with groups of individuals. We did have some incidents earlier in the evening, we did have some confrontations with we made about a half a dozen arrests. That seems to have some impact. Again, we did have folks from the Community Take leadership roles in reducing tensions within the group that had assembled. Since then the traffic in the city has abated, the foot traffic, and clearly we are prepared as those events unfolded last night. We will be available and vigilant, but we did see improvement last night and tonight has been improvement over yesterday. We are comparatively speaking, in a positive place. It is only 10 30 p. M. , there can obviously be on anticipated changes, but notwithstanding that fact, the vast portion of the community in the not interested in doing damage to where they live. We will continue to monitor the conditions overnight and we will brief you again tomorrow morning. The mayor will now speak. Thank you, i realize it is only 10 35 p. M. And last night the activity occurred after this time, so this is not a situation where we are saying that everything is great. But up to this point, the tonight. I have been throughout milwaukee and i see very little foot traffic on the west side over all. I think people understand that this remains a situation where they have to be careful, they have to be behaving themselves, particularly heartened by the report in the media that there are very few young people out there. Parents and guardians have taken very seriously the curfew that those under the age of 18 years old. Hopefully, that will be of assistance. What really has been a major source of support has been the Faith Community and Community Groups that have been out there continuously, really working to make this a peaceful situation. And i must give amazing credit to the police and fire department. The Police Officers and firefighters have been extraordinary over the last two nights, so i ask residents to thank them when they see them, because they have shown professionalism and tremendous respect for the people in the community. And that goes a long way in making sure that we have Good Community relations in milwaukee. Is there any indication that protesters could . We did have people from out of town come in specifically to cause disruption and today started antics around 11 30 p. M. At night. We have not seen anything of them today, so we are hopeful they will not be repeating that behavior. If they do, we will be taking appropriate action. Is this going to go on for a lot of days . I will say is the day when the school year curfew kicks in, so that would be the day when you have the 10 00 p. M. Curfew during the week, in any regard. We will have it as long as it is necessary. The initial indications are that it has worked well. It is still only 10 40 p. M. , so things could happen tonight or early tomorrow morning. But i do want to thank the parents and guardians who have understood why this is so important. Media, are you also seeing a change in tone . That is a difficult question, there is a lot of narrative on social media. That is the rumor mill, and there is a lot of false narratives or in accurate narratives being pushed right now. An attempt to use them to move mobilize or motivpe so we are concerned about it and we are paying attention to it. It is something we must remain aware of. Are the police doing anything to interfere to speak over the social media, any Technology Going on . There have been complaints that we do not have supersecret technology to discuss communications, if we did there are communications i would rather disrupt. So whatever problems they are having is not related to us. District 7 was closed down today. Can you talk about that . That was brief. Out of abundance of caution, the station commander closed the door temporarily in some threats, but that was for a fairly short time. We are staying open for business and we know that there are times that will require some level of risk. The building is staffed for selfdefense as well as to provide services for the public. And that was a brief amount of time. Was it someone making a if they were fired at the station. Last 48 hours have been tense for some of the officers, i think you understand why. But we are open for business. [indiscernible] to my knowledge, there have been some reports of shots fired, i do not know how many that we have had. We will report on that by tomorrow and we will give you the last 24 hours, but i say that there are less tonight compared to last night. Thank you. Thank you very much. Kathy you have been listening to a briefing from the mayor of milwaukee and the police chief, who say that there were six arrests earlier tonight, but overall there is a different tone for tonight and give a big thanks to the Community Organizations and parents who took the curfew seriously.
