President ial candidates will continue their whirlwind tour of the state today. Ahead of this weekends republican primary. But with only three days to go. Still no word from governor nikki haley on who she supports in the race. At a tuesday News Conference, the governor said she knows her decision could come soon. But shes still unsure who she believes best understands the challenges our state is facing. She did however make it clear that she would not be endorsing the current frontrunner donald trump. People in South Carolina are doing, which is, i watch the debate. Im trying to go through all the situations, im looking at all the candidates who are there, and trying to figure out who that person would be. So no, im not at a point yet. The governor said at the end of the day the Republican Party needs a fighter. In 2012 haley endorsed former Massachusetts Governor mitt romney ahead of the South Carolina primary. Some top watchers of the campaign say a haley endorsement could go a long way in South Carolina. Last night the university of South Carolina hosted a panel of National Journalists to talk about the upcoming president al primaries and the influence the governor could have. Our chad mills was there. She would bring a lot of energy to the ticket. People may not vote for the president , like you guys were saying, because of her, but she could juice up a ticket and really bring energy. It is striking that the election may come and go without an endorsement from the governor in the state that usually is the decider. Interesting moment, but one reason may be that she is someone who is on the short list for any of the republican candidates, particularly if Hillary Clinton is the nominee, and they are looking to kind of counter that appeal among women. I dont know if the governor will endorse. I do know that her endorsement would likely go a long way here in South Carolina right now. She is popular not just here, but shes very popular nationally, but i dont know if shell ensorse, because youve got to wonder if she was going to endorse, she probably would have done it by now. Shes an effective politician, and her introduction to the National Audience around the removal of the flag in response to the horrible events in charleston, i think was an extremely impressive and effective introduction, so based on what we have seen so far, i think that many republicans if marco rubio isnt the nominee, hes someone whos your governor. The journalists also talked about donald trump and told the crowd they do belive that he has a chance to win the nomination, especially after surviving a series of gaffes from last fall up until recently. Ohio Governor John Kasich was back in the midlands after taking a break to campaign in michigan. Kasich held a town hall meeting in cayce last night. A new cnn poll shows kasich could be in trouble in the palmetto state. Hes currently in sixth place with only 4 percent of the vote. At last nights town hall, kasich pledged to keep his campaign positive. We all plug together. And im not going to disappear. Im not going to go in some bubble somewhere and not be available for people. Because i intend to travel the states to tell each of the states how the other states are doing well to solve problems, and fix things, and raise all of us up. The same cnn poll shows donald trump ahead by 16 points. Cruz comes in second and rubio in third. Other two candidates polling ahead of kasich. Texas senator, ted cruz says the death of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia makes his campaign an urgent one. Cruz spoke exclusively with wis tuesday. He says rights like religious freedom and Second Amendment rights could be in danger depending on who takes scalias place on the Supreme Court. Sot ted cruz 00 15 42 this vacancy, i knew Justice Scalia for 20 years. He was a lion of the law. The court hangs in the balance. And i think Justice Scalias death really underscores the steaks out of this election. The people of South Carolina are asking who can i trust to make Supreme Court nominees . Republicans have so many times gotten it wrong. And they get it wrong because theyre not willing to spend of the political capital, to nominate and confirm approve and conservative. I have spent my entire adult life fighting to defend the constitution and the bill of rights. And part of the reason conservatives are uniting behind my campaign is because they know , they know , that every nominee on the court that i will appoint will be a principled who will protect our rights. Cruz also unveiled his plan to increase americas military forces after what he called neglect by the Obama Administration. Well have more on that ahead on sunrise. For democratic candidate Bernie Sanders a strong showing in the palmetto state could come down to two key groups. Young voters and African Americans. We have got to achieve the day when young black males and women can walk the streets without worrying about being harassed by a police officer. Think of him as a protestor,as part of the also the Civil Rights Movement and hes not try to buy our vote, hes telling you to keep an open mind. Columbia city and richland School District one leaders are coming together today to stress the importance of reading readiness in the classroom. Its part of the together we can read initiative. Our Michal Higdon is live in the newsroom with more on the group the program is targeting. Todays kickoff is the 8th year that the city and richland one have partnered to show 3rd graders, the importance of reading and literacy for success. The idea behind together we can read is to engage students and connect them with Community Leaders who read to each classroom. I spoke with ida thompson with richland School District one. She says the program specifically targets 3rd graders who are at the pivotal age where adequate reading skills must be obtained before grades. Its a reason state legislators passed the read to succeed bill a couple of years ago. Beginning with the 20172018 school year, if a child cant read by the end of third grade, they will be held back for intensive help. Reading is that gateway. It opens the doors to everything.
