South carolina is once again in the National Political spotlight with governor nikki haleys address following president obamas final state of the Union Address. The governor gave the address from the Governors Mansion last night. She highlighted major turning points for South Carolina this past year. Including our state coming together and moving forward following the Charleston Church shooting and the removal of the Confederate Flag from the state house grounds. Its that theme of togetherness that the governor used to take aim at republican president ial candidate, donald trump. Today, we live in a time of threats like few others in recent memory. During anxious times, it can be tempting to follow the siren call of the angriest voices. We must resist that temptation. No one who is willing to work hard, abide by our laws, and love our traditions should ever feel country. Governor haley, who is indianamerican, called trumps proposal of a temporary ban against muslims unconstitutional and embarrassing for t t gop. Governor nikki haley will be speaking on the today show, this morning regarding her address after last nights state of the union. It airs right here on wis right after sunrise. Meanwhileback in washington, president obama last night looked to solidify his legacy as he nears the end of his second term. It was the president s final state of the Union Address to both houses of congress. Karin caifa has more from washington. President obama spoke for about one hour here at the u. S. Capitol. He spoke with an upbeat tone about the current state of our union and the future. But a less positive tone about the current state of things here in washington, and was also critical of some of the rhetoric out there on the Republican Campaign trail. Speaker, the president of the United States president obamas final state of the Union Address struck an optimistic tone. Combining an ambitious agenda with a sense of hope for the future. i dont want to talk just about the next year. I want to focus on the next five years, ten years, and beyond. The president addressed some of the division in congress and urged members to Work Together democracy grinds to a halt without a willingness to compromise the minds of many americans. The president discussed how he plans to handle the growing threat of isis if this congress is serious about winning this war, and wants to send a message to our troops and the world, you should finally authorize the use of military force against isil. Take a vote. South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley delivered the republican response. And offered a very different perspective. we are facing the most dangerous terrorist threat september 11th, and this president appears either unwilling or unable to deal with it. The path ahead for the president will not be easy election years can be difficult ones to get things done. The president hopes tonights speech will serve as a call to action. i believe in change, because i believe in you the american people. And thats why i stand here as confident as ive ever been, that the state of our union is strong. Aides close to the president say he does not want to be perceived as a traditional lame duck president. So he will take his message out on the road this week. Hell hit two predominately republican areas of the country making stops in omaha, nebraska, and baton rouge, louisiana, to talk about the things he outlined here tonight and his plans for the remainder of his administration. Homes and roads along kinley creek flooded in october, before then, and since then and the neighborhoods future came up before the county council yesterday. Chad mills spoke with some of the neighbors weve ripped the bathrooms out. The historic october flood left its mark on david pointers lexington county home. It looked like we were in house boats. I mean, as far as you can see with your camera everything was surrounded by water. But for pointer, whos lived here since 1976, it was nothing new. Its flooded before, since his house is on kinley creek, which flows in several tributaries from the irmoarea down into lower saluda. Its this creek that pointer says is the problem. Once harbison started being built, we experienced more and more 4th was the worst, but weve had flooding for years. Engineers say urbanization along harbison boulevard and piney grove road without proper Stormwater Management has increased the amount of water flowing into this neighborhood and others on the creek. And all that water has helped erode the creek and overwhelm it at times. This has been an ongoing problem, as youve heard, since 1974, and, from what i understand, even small rain events are overtopping its bank and flooding peoples yards and, in some cases, their homes. Now, lexington county is looking at the problem more closely. In this most recent meeting, county engineers released a joint study with the army corps of engineers. In it, engineers recommend either restructuring and widening the creek, buying and destroying at risk homes, or doing a bit of both. These people have families and children that they have to relocate to rebuild, and then when the flood happens again, the cycle and over. Its a repetitive cycle. Buying problematic homes makes sense to councilman phillip yarborough. And pointer would be fine with that, if it meant a permanent fix to a problem that continues for now. It will absolutely continue. Absolutely continue. I mean, its been going on for years. That was chad mills reporting. The recommended plans for kinley creek cost 18 to 24 million dollars. Nevertheless, the council said itll read this study in an solution. A columbia man will remain in jail on charges connected to a recent murder in lexington. Britney glaser goes inside an orthopedic clinic where hoverboard injuries are adding up. Orthopedic surgeon, doctor jonathan foret, says hes never treated patients for hoverboard injuries until this holiday season. Say that they fell, but after talking to them a little more, because their injury is typically more than we would see from a regular fall, they say they were trying out their hoverboard or their kids hoverboard and had a fall. Hoverboard injuries have increased so rapidly, that the Consumer ProductSafety Commission has issued a warning to users about fall risks. S. Weve been seeing injuries both to the bones and joints, wrists and ankle injuries, fractures and those types of things, said dr. Foret. Its been more than what would be expected just from a typical fall. Doctor foret says injuries are more serious because of the height and speed behind the fall. I think they underestimate the stability of it and so they get on it and probably dont have the right protective equipment and then they fall and when they fall from an elevated platform, the energy is quite a bit more than falling from standing, said dr. Foret. Some of the broken bones have required casts. Even surgery, other tears, sprains, and strains can ground a person doctor foret offers these tips if you plan to step aboard a hoverboard. Make sure youre wearing the proper protective equipment, first of all, and then start slow. Make sure you have something stable to hold on while youre getting a feel for how the hoverboard feels before you get out there and try it out.
