Governor nikki haley is Standing Firm against president obamas plan to shut down the Guantanamo Bay prison and bring the terrorists there into america. Today the president announced he is sending congress a plan to close gitmo and transfer dozens of the terrorists to facilities in the u. S. , possibly including the navy brig in charleston. Governor haley has already declared she opposes bringing terrorists to South Carolina and today she took to twitter saying, we have made our stance very clear we will fight any attempt by president obama to bring terrorists into our states. The president s plan comes seven years after he vowed to shutdown the facility during his first year in office. Andrew spencer has the latest. 1 101 12 for many years, its been clear that the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay does not advance our national security. It undermines it. President obama is calling for the closure of the Guantanamo Bay detention facility. The long awaited plan was delivered to Congress Tuesday morning. Keeping this facility open is contrary to our values. It undermines our standing in the world. It is viewed as a stain on our broader record of upholding the highest standards of rule of law. The blueprint involves transferring most of the detainees to other countries. The rest deemed too dangerous to be moved abroad would be relocated to a detention facility in the united states. The plan identifies 13 possible us transfer sites including a military prison in leavenworth and the federal Supermax Prison in florence, colorado. Bernie sanders offered up his support for the plan releasing a statement saying i am encouraged to see that the president is down the Guantanamo Bay prison. As i have said for years, the prison at guantanamo must be closed as quickly as possible but reactions from other president ial candidates have not been so positive president ial candidate were not going to close guantanamo. President ial candidate dont shut down gitmo, expand it and lets have some new terrorists there. Before any transfers to us soil could take place, legal obstacles would likely need to be overcome.
