Extradition from Georgia to Kentucky Well the Federal Reserve Bank in New York has added another $92700000000.00 in temporary liquidity to the financial systems what the heck is going on the keep beating the banks all this money let's check in with the author of The Global Brain Howard Bloom Howard Happy Thanksgiving to you my friend now what's going on with these banks here is attacking sense of humor 17th the New York Fed is actually pumped almost $109000000000.00 into the banking system $109000000000.00 That's enough money to buy single family homes for all of the families of Philadelphia the Fed can afford that kind of thing and now has holdings of a whopping $44.00 trillion dollars Why this infusion of cash what was the emergency on September 16th according to Reuters a spike in the overnight lending rate shock the financial system they struck term lending rate rocketed from a mere 2 percent to a whopping 10 percent in less than 24 hours that's like a payment on your car going from $200.00 a month to a $1000.00 a month over night so the Federal Reserve Bank of New York sir pumping money into the system to bring the lending rate down again and to hold it down among other things the Fed go up 73000000000 dollars and will respond and I was curious and $7000000000.00 in Treasury bills from the biggest banks in the country but filling the vaults of those banks with a ready supply of cash What's more the Fed will probably keep pumping money into the big banks right on up until January in theory the money the Fed is sloshing into the big banks is money that the banks can land in reality it's money that the banks might land at all to quote Reuters The banks are holding plenty of reserves and giving them more cash doesn't guarantee it'll reach browers which is one reason this approach may not work the way it's supposed to and there's a reason number 2 is that the plan might work this money from the Fed only goes to big if that. Banks and institutions trust small lenders are left out and small lenders are where the rubber meets the road so shoveling cash of the big boys may leave Oakland Raiders calls a weak spot in the lending market what's more in a program a team. Senator and presidential candidate well as a foreigner sent a letter to President Secretary Stephen h.-a pointing out that the big banks that the money is going to is going to are making record profits they do not need the extra cash and only if the big banks can loan that money out will the federal reserve funds help keep interest rates low What's more after the Great Recession of 2008 Congress passed regulations to keep momentary financial questions from becoming recessions and keep recessions from becoming depressions Well those of us warned one who can not to use this September crisis as an excuse to loosen those regulations Morris said it would be painfully ironic if unexplained chaos in a small corner of the banking market became an excuse to further loosen rules that protect the economy of Newton ignored center and Steadman who can indicate that they might back loosen those regulations and allow the big banks operate with a lower level of reserves now look reserves for flotation questions flotation devices that help keep recessions from becoming depressions we are overdue for a recession what's more the president has an uncomfortable pattern of extending his credit to the limit and beyond and then getting ending up in bankruptcy and they may be doing that with the u.s. Economy has been urging the Fed to lower interest rates to turbo charge the economy he wants a 3 percent annual growth rate which is terrific but the current growth rate is a lot less than that it's only 2 point one percent that may be why the Fed has just cut interest rates for the 3rd time this year in his personal life taking credit beyond the limit as bankrupted the president 6 times let's hope the Treasury by the pressure of the Federal Reserve Bank doesn't follow that pattern and drive an entire country into bankruptcy our country. Let's hope not Howard thanks again and have a great Thanksgiving our friend while obesity is primarily associated with the weight gain a new study suggests it triggers inflammation in the nervous system that could damage important regions of the brain developments in m.r.i. Like diffusion tensor imaging a technique that tracks the diffusion of water along the brain signal carrying white matter tracks have enabled researchers to study this damage directly and they say it is happening while the holiday season often inspires feelings of warmth joy and belonging but for some this time of year can evoke feelings of loneliness stress and anxiety the holiday blues or real phenomenon but they are likely to have different effects than you might think while the data are limited there are some evidence about the causes and consequences of the holiday blues who better to talk about this than our resident psychiatry Dr Peter Bergen author of a number of books including Wow I'm an American how to live life like our heroic founders Peter why are people down during the holidays. Yes 1st let me say how wonderful it is that you do this on the holidays I don't know how many years now I've heard you were going on 18 my friend going on 18 give and you give out and give. In Allah days and for a lot of years now you've had me doing it with you yes Your Honor to come on and such an opportunity to try to help mark up people and to perk up people and give them help and it is true that it can be a time a terrible time for people and the reason why the studies don't show anything is they are looking at fam at work they're looking at the economy and so on the reason people get really blue around this time here is it stimulates their experiences as kids during Thanksgiving and Christmas that that's the main general Wesen Well maybe something else bad happened but usually it's a pain around family and one wonderful thing about Thanksgiving is it's about gratitude so when we start to get around Thanksgiving and take it we can think about that we have a national holiday of gratitude and we can be grateful for so many different things especially in America I mean we've got we've got bounty in America we always have we've got nature nature is always there we can always find nature and if we can actually use Thanksgiving to feel grateful for what ever it is we have. It will give this hope and it will give us health that will give a slug a life it will help us physically we have research about all of that and you know nothing is more important when you're feeling caved in and just getting a sense of gratitude and a ray of hope and then sharing it that's Thanksgiving is about sharing and you know share your ray of hope and share any gratitude you can with other people and that can help you some now and whatever those past memories are and make films what was our very 1st Thanksgiving like with the founding fathers when you go we go back it goes way way back to even before the founding fathers but the 1st Thanksgiving was George Washington a committee of Congress asked him to give thanksgiving for America its security and its great thriving that was taking place from the very very beginning and it was about thanking God thanking Providence for having America and I think that's something else we can all do to perk ourselves up give ourselves a bigger perspective because there is so many places in the world I would rather not. And I'm still glad to be and I agree with you on Thanksgiving happy Thanksgiving to you Peter and to your wife thank you so much for everything you've done for us and of course listeners over the years well here's a story we're going to keep our eyes on a mysterious object hurling towards our solar system from deep space has been photographed by scientists the incoming comet is like nothing scientists have seen before and is believed to have come from another star system what the heck pray tell could hit Be Up next Dr Daniel wage Wallsten back with us on Coast to Coast His latest work the Andromeda evolution It's a takeoff of Michael Crighton this book on the in dramaturgy strain in the me. And welcome back to our precincts giving program George Norry with you let me introduce our next guest Dr Daniel h. Wilson a year and a speech d. From Robotics Institute of Carnegie Mellon University where he also received a Master's degree in robotics and data mining he has worked in top research labs including Microsoft Research the Paul to research center and the Intel Research in Seattle Daniel currently lives in a fully wired smart house author of a number of books including the latest and drama evolution Daniel welcome back you were last on with my colleague Ian Punnett 11 and a half years ago yes thank you for having me back my gosh it's been a long time what I've been doing in between I have been writing more books so yeah I just I've kept busy I think I started out writing nonfiction and now I've moved into novels and written some comic books and screenplay so I've just been busy behind this laptop a.v.n. Drummer evolution is a great take off from Michael Crighton work and it's just a scary if not more so my gosh let's hope it never happens yet with thank you you know it was those are big shoes to fill and so I've been really happy to see the response out there of people who are big fans of Michael Crighton who've read the book and been able to enjoy it didn't his family and he passed away in 2008 didn't his pit family kind of indoor shoot to do this book yes so this is a collaboration with. His. Michael Creighton's wife Cherie Crighton has a company called Crighton son and they are you know mostly concerned with preserving his legacy and making sure that new generations the readers are able to continue to enjoy his work and and developing you know more stories in the world that he create. I did so you know this all started for me when a friend of mine named Ernie Klein he's another science fiction writer you know we all stick together. Ready player one which is a great great book turn into a great movie and he let me know he said hey you know I got a strange request about potentially you know continuing a story from another author I wonder if you'd be interested and I 1st just thought well you know I write my own books I'll be fine no thanks by the way who is it and he said oh it's Michael Crighton And I said. Maybe I ought to check this out thank you Ernie So that's really how it began and I started you know I had a meeting with actually I had a few meetings I got vetted you know yeah and we absolutely and Michael Crighton in his day only author to date as well Daniel who had a top book a top television series and a top movie going all in the same time yeah I know it's a little intimidating he he was a dynamo on top of that he was 6 foot 9 so it was I didn't know he was that tall he was a really big guy he was the kind of person that people walk up to and ask him if he plays basketball he was enough Aleem from the Bible. I mean whatever he tried to do he pretty much did it so. You know I was I was super excited because I had a course been a fan since I was a kid the kind of author where if you pick up one book you know it's usually you find a mass market market paperback somewhere and you you know you just crack it open and then suddenly you need to go track down every other book and read them all which is what I did as a teenager before we get into your book The Andromeda evolution let's talk about the Andromeda Strain Michael Crane's book for those people who have never read it who may not even heard about it tell us a little bit about what that is what the concept was short so the high concept for the Andromeda Strain is. That there's a an American weapons research program that's going on now keep in mind this book came out in 1969 so this is the 50th anniversary this year so there's a weapons research program going on where they are putting satellites and into you know high altitude low Earth orbit and they're collecting samples and one of these one of these satellites crashes back to earth and before the researchers can recover it some people in a small town find it and make a really bad decision to open it and what they release turns out to be extremely lethal and the story is about a team of scientists to gather to isolate and do research on this microorganism The Andromeda Strain and trying to stop it before it proliferates and wipes out life on earth all very real too isn't it Daniel Well you know the book that's that's the reason that the book was so successful I think is because if out so real and you know since then keep in mind in 1989 you know this is people were just going to the moon but you know there was no internet that was right and they didn't know what to expect when the astronauts came back you know I did I had to do a lot of research of course for the for the novel and I talked to a lot of folks at NASA and one guy told me he said that that the Andromeda Strain actually inspired some of the Korean team procedures that they put the astronauts through after they came back from the moon because they really weren't sure you know what they were going to be bringing back and whether the regolith could have infected the astronauts with something you know something they didn't want to spread and your book The Andromeda evolution starts 50 years later in the when is fiction it could be the real thing to you know I I think that the central. Concept of The Andromeda Strain was that it had to feel real and so that's why I let the exact same amount of time pass and in the novel I treat the end drama strain as gospel truth and so everything in the new novel really builds off of that and thank you because I did everything I could to try to maintain that sense of reality you know one thing that was interesting was Crighton did write his novel before the internet and I thought that everything in there was pretty much real like he there's all these citations from different authors different books quotes from technical articles and I was so surprised to look it up and find that none of it existed but I don't have that that sort of advantage with this novel because people can just look up everything in the Andromeda evolution that try and determine if it's real so what I had a lot of fun with was integrating some of the real some of the real events of the of the world that are really happening so for instance you know the Chinese space station that you Ngong one it really did break up in the atmosphere and go through reentry you know around the equal Yeah and they didn't know where it was going to land earlier crash here it's a little scary. And so I integrated a lot of real world events into the novel so that you know so I could just sort of play with you know like the idea of why would they why would Russia in the United States team up to build an international space station during the Cold War you know . At So you know I kind of have my own answers to all that in the novel and I think it you know makes a lot a lot of fun you pick up basically the 50 years after Michael Crighton is book with the same story or totally different one well you know so what happens in the 1st novel is that they do a lot of research on this on this microorganism micro particle they're not exact. Sure if it's alive or what it is and then it evolves into a new form and so you know I pick up 50 years later that and that form has not evolved again but people have been doing a lot of research on it and essentially you know I kind of make the cynical assumption that what people have mostly been trying to do with it is weaponize it and so you end up in a situation where 50 years later we've been scouring the planet looking for this trying to make sure that it hasn't evolved and then you know an alert is triggered and project wildfire goes back into action 50 years later the characters that you created for your book in the Andromeda evolution I can pronounce some other names. Others I can but tell me about the characters Yeah you know so this is what I love about Crighton novels is that they're really fueled by curiosity right because it's almost always some crazy event happens you know it's 6 it's incredibly dangerous and credibly cool and a team of scientists is put together to go out figure it out and try to solve it and you know as an aside they almost never succeed at anything in his book which is there's some truth to that as well but you know I really built on my own experiences in academia whenever I put together my team of scientists for this novel and so you know when I showed up to Carnegie Mellon I grew up in Oklahoma you know Tulsa I had not spent a lot of time outside of Oklahoma I had traveled around but when I got to Carnegie Mellon I was the only for a little while I was the only American in my master's program and I looked around and I use this incredibly diverse group of people from all over the world and so I really build on that with my character and hold on Daniel will talk more about your work and these characters will take phone calls with you next hour I'm George Noory back in a moment from coast to coast am Coast insiders the new version of the coast to coast am app is now. And welcome back to coast to coast George Norry with you along with Dr Daniel Wilson we're talking about his latest work of course which is called the Andromeda evolution His website is linked up at coast to coast am dot com It's his name but it's all linked up for you back to these characters Daniel that you created specifically they all have a specific role in the book in the story did you select that on purpose or how did that come about yeah I put it together so that I could could try to try to imagine sort of complimentary roles and of course it's an artificial intelligence algorithm that decides which scientists should be put together and which configuration so I have a sort of a material specialist like a nanotechnology specialist and an x o. N x o geologist somebody who studies the geology of other planets and of course they've got a robotics expert because that's that's that's you and then I have a cycle not so a Chinese astronaut who's also part of the crew. And so they all kind of together go out and try to solve this and of course although they've got impeccable research and science skills of course the issue of different nationalities in an interpersonal conflicts you know those come to the forefront over the course of this and it's really about trust and so that definitely impacts the adventure that they have it sure does and you know you talk about robotics and of course that's your background robotics just to stick in a little sidebar trippier for a moment robotics are coming along like crazy aren't I yeah you know when I graduated in 2006 and I had a degree and artificial intelligence essentially that's what data mining is and I looked around and there were not really that many jobs for that. So I started writing and then you know you wait 5 or 5 or 10 years and I think there's probably not a better degree to have than than to be an artificial intelligence person and everybody wants them so yeah the research is coming along at a really stunning taste any nibbles for this book to become a movie you know I think it would make a terrific movie but I'm I'm not in the know on that so I have to sit back and just wait and see like everyone else because that's really quite a state that's in charge of that yeah let them let them see if they can pitch it for you they may be able to pull that off the Andromeda Strain was actually made into a great movie that that's really holds up all these years later only I couldn't allow myself to watch it because you know soon as you watch a movie you can't keep straight what happened in the book right if I was to watch that I know that I had managed to make some mistakes that would not be true to the novel so I really had to sequester myself away from the film I was going to watch the Netflix movie of the Irishman which is based on the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa in the book they paint houses I paint houses which Frank Sheeran claims he killed Hoffa he's dead now by was going to watch the movie today before heading for the cave studio here in St Louis where I am right now for the holidays Daniel the movie's 3 and a half hours long is it really yeah 3 and a half hours long I went I thought it was like an hour and a half I got to watch it on another day well I suppose it's you know these days if they're if they're streaming movies and they just go straight to your house I mean nobody's going to complain if you you know get up and posit go take a bathroom break or my gosh launched a long time how do we know that some strain like the Andromeda Strain hasn't already hit the planet in reality Well you know panspermia theory I mean it could have could have been what created life here in the 1st place right I mean that's always sure. Or you know I really like one thing I liked about the Andromeda Strain is that those scientists there they really contemplated kind of the same question they thought you know if bacteria and microorganisms can and can exist and space then you know where would where would this stuff come from and one thing they theorize is that you know you have especially in the early formation of the solar system these big impacts that are launching. Interior chunks of the planet you know up into space and so if life existed in an asteroid hit you know potentially some microbes could be shot out into space and even infect other planets you know so life can spread between between planets and you know over geological periods of time could cause life so there are so many different possibilities to imagine in my day Daniel most of the Saif I work was written by men and it was read by men or boys whether it was a comic or some kind of t.v. Show or film where does it stand today has that balanced out a little bit between men and women in terms of Saif I interest yeah I absolutely think it has you know. If you if you really look at a lot of times science fiction and fantasy are sort of combined together and I think that you know when you combine those together you really do end up reaching a much more balanced audience you know and if you look back at the at the science fiction greats you know from the Golden Age they're mostly men you know Arthur c. Clarke and Asimov you know you could throw Bradbury in there Oh absolutely and more . But you know I think that now there's a kind of a new golden age happening where there's a lot of diverse voices showing up and and it's kind of fun you know to to to see how it's evolving and see how we're hearing from you know lots of different people and you know it gives you the chance to get surprised by what you're reading and to have your horizons expanded I have on my bum bulletin board in my office in Los Angeles a letter sent to me by Ray Bradbury Oh wow it was insecure last a key a piece he had written for The Twilight Zone and he wrote an episode called I sing The Body Electric which was a robotic story which you would really appreciate of a family who lost their mother the father and their 2 kids and the mother died and they were so distraught he went to the robot store and bought a nanny robot and she lived with the family took care of them as a mother would and they loved her she was a robot and it ended of course I'm going to my mom's will tell people the ending it ended with the were nanny robot being the same but the kids were now adults and they were hugging her goodbye and she was going off to another younger family to start all over again and there was a message there but Bradbury wrote that episode in I had written a story about that for a newsletter that we were putting out at the time called the after dark newsletter and we sent him a copy just to Ana and I are on a whim and he just fell in love with the. Henri wrote and sent me this huge letter and it's up there on the board I'll never get rid of it this is why Louis is why letters you know if there's something special about them you know in this age of e-mails if you printed out an e-mail from Bradbury this is not going to have the same gravitas you know now the left so I sold a lot of her $2000000.00 and I'm not kidding. Come on now I wouldn't do that I wouldn't do that at all so what did the book come out so it came out last it came out on the 12th of November so her season at times been flying since then and it really has and you're happy with it I am you know I mean listen these are these are big shoes to fill and it was it was interesting to try and capture Michael Crighton voice so that you know the audience felt like they were in good hands. But also sort of have my own voice you know because there's no way just to mimic somebody and you know come off with something successful so it went straight to the New York Times bestseller list and it's had a lot of positive reviews which really just lets me you know exhale finally because you know I really want to make sure that all the fans all Michael Crighton fans have a chance to really enjoy this because you know if they could read another Crighton book I'd be right there 1st in line with them but you know it's not a possibility now and so I think it's really exciting that his new adventures are being carried out in the world that he created while when what's so neat about this book is the possibility of reality behind it yeah and that kind of makes you edgy when you read it because I mean the characters are real the events could be real this is all possible I mean this is this is not just way out there Sy fight this this is the possibilities here yeah this is really built on an existing research and it's possible it's even mingled with real world events. That are occurring in this area I don't know I don't want to give away too much of the plot you know that's all I get all I get it major twists and turns that occur but you know the story really concerns the idea of you know they found this microorganism in at a high altitude it's been there a long time there's major questions you know does this microorganism micro particle does it exist in other places in the solar system if it did you know you might think that there's an intelligence behind it you know maybe it's been spirits been spreading for a reason if not you might think maybe it's just an accident of nature you know so. This is what I loved about the Andromeda there was so much mythology to build on you know I really had just I have was like a kid in a candy shop with all the different ideas I could explore while you on hold waiting to come on did you hear my new story about this object that's coming from some other Scholer system yeah it has scientists totally baffled they call it they're calling it a comet but they don't know what it is and it's headed our way and they are just baffled and it's the 2nd one right so we know we had another one coming plant to momma I'm almost whatever it was just it's a tough one Yeah so it's like your characters' names I love the yeah Odhiambo He's Kenyan. But. You know I 5 really have been following this closely what's fascinating to me is the reason they know that that these are interstellar for sure is that you know our solar system is mostly on the same plane right it's pretty much flat they call that the ecliptic plane I'm pretty sure yeah and these these objects are coming completely perpendicular so that means they they were not ever thrown out of our solar system and they're coming back these things have been in space for maybe billions of years and they're coming from another star you know and that is just fascinating to think about isn't it I mean we don't. Have to just worry about getting hit from something from the asteroid belt we've got to worry about getting zapped from something outside of our own solar system now yeah I mean you think of panspermia between planets in the solar system but then you realize with this you know this is 2 interstellar objects in the course of I mean I think there's obviously been many more that we've only just got the technology to even detect them moving so quickly and they're coming at such a strange angle no one no one's been looking for these you wonder you know panspermia between stars and then use them out farther you think about galaxies interacting you know so it's really the at the scales are so epic that I think it's really mind boggling Daniel if you knew we only had a week left on this planet that something was headed this way and it was going to obliterate the planet in about a week would you change your life in a any or what would you do you've got a week left that's it we all have just a week left I have 3 kids and I've got one of them the baby so I know I know what I'd be doing for that last week you know I actually that's a really fun premise by the way you know for for stories I have a short story called The Blue afternoon that lasted forever that really kind of considers something very similar it's probably the best thing I've ever written just a short story. While there it would be intriguing to see what people would do if we only had a week left Yeah I don't know you sumps some people say you only have a day left that's not enough time I want to least half a week. There isn't I think there's a novel called Babylon. Gosh it's about a guy who knows that that they're going to drop nukes and it's about what he does to try to prepare Oh my last Babylon the last Babylon Yeah it's a great book and it's about about just that and kind of this feeling that you know everybody would panic if you know there's all these all these books and things where they just assume you know you can't tell people because they'll all panic and everything of the crazy but I really wonder if that's true you know if there was something finales analogy to it like huge asteroid impact or something if people wouldn't just make peace but well I went to the supermarket today to pick up a few little Thanksgiving goodies and every parking lot car spot was taken by the driver on for 15 minutes before somebody left to grab it in then people are honking and chasing people and then you go in the store and the shopping line where you check out in this store also happens to have the self check or things now where you do it yourself I mean the lines were apps absolutely astronomical Can you imagine what they'd be if this was the end. Yeah I suppose it all the term it all depends on what the scenario is but but yeah you know. I think this is something I explore in in my fiction a lot of times you know you have a scenario where the worst in people comes out whenever there's some kind of you know huge disaster that's occurred or going to occur but you know there's also times when you see the absolute darkest points in history create heroes out of people right and this is these moments whenever people you know some people stand up and they do a really truly amazing things and you kind of see the best out of humanity you know so it's it's interesting to see the both sides of that coin right whenever you have something really bad happening sometimes you have heroes and sometimes you have villains that are forged in those moments when Dr Daniel Wilson we're talking about his work called The Andromeda evolution it's a book that just came out about a week or so ago and we are going to take calls with him next hour about his work about the possibility of some kind of Andromeda Strain but he's also an expert in robotics so if you have a question about robotics check on in you know do you think with us too I'm found I love playing chess Daniel and I'm fascinated by the evolution of these electronic chess games that you can pay to play online now against the computer how does this happen do you have like a Bobby Fischer type program in it or what. Will you know I mean Chess is one of the 1st areas that that research has really tried to crack you know by using machine learning and artificial intelligence and what's interesting I mean because it's a game there are set rules and there are only a set number of configurations so I mean if you if you had infinite processing power you could really brute force it and just figure out the perfect move for every possible board configuration but you don't so then it becomes. More interesting they have to decide you know how much processing power do I have how far ahead can I look and which areas should I explore and so it's really not about having a smart human that's really good at chess program it it's really about. Having it be very efficient and how it looks forward to try to beat the human and then after that they bring in the experts to try to layer in the very specific pieces of knowledge but as our processing power has grown these priest programs have gotten incredibly good and they've branched out into other games like go which is. Exponentially more complex than chess do you see today we're a robot might be able to think for itself have a motion and attack us or do something like that you know yes you know I think that that boy people. But I don't feel like that's something that's going to happen overnight and what I'm more interested in is the fact that right now we are the 1st generation of human beings who have ever been on this planet have ever you know out of out of all the 100000 years of prehistory or 200000 where the 1st ones who've ever interacted with life like objects that aren't actually people so if you talk to an Amazon echo and it talks back to you in the voice of a person. You know that's where the 1st people have ever had that interaction there's no yeah ever talk to anybody and then heard back from them and that wasn't a person or you know maybe a bird or something so so I'm curious how is this going to affect people you know and and in particular children so if for instance you can command the echo to do whatever you want and it'll just do it and it talks to you it sounds like a woman you know is this going to you know create a scenario where children using a device like that have expectations that they can just order people around interesting take Stay with us Daniel we're going to talk more about this I want to get your take on driverless cars and trucks and we'll also take phone calls next on coast to coast am get Daily Show Updates right here in box for free with the coast zone newsletter sign up today at coast to coast am dot com.
