There seemed to be only one stock that everyone on wall street was talking about today. Its name, alibaba, and its triumph in the initial Stock Offering managed to live up to all the hype creating a seldom seen mob of traders jockeying around the post where traders finally began trading on the New York Stock Exchange just before noon. Alibabas ipo was one for the record books bigger than any offering that came before it. Shares of the Online Shopping powerhouse blew right past the opening share house thursday and put the value on the company at roughly 42 billion, more than top competitor u. S. Giant amazon, more than ebay, and more even than facebook. And just a bit below walmart. By the close, alibabas shares were 30 higher. Kayla tausche has more on the blowout debut on the nyse. Reporter alibaba is off and running. The chinese ecommerce giant soared above 90 in its debut after pricing thursday at 68 a share. The Company Founded in the apartment of entrepreneur jack ma in 1999 with just a dozen partners now responsible for 80 of chinas ecommerce and valued today in the Public Market in the United States at 240 billion. Their Business Model is described often as a matchup between amazon and ebay but now is a formidable challenge here in the u. S. , bigger than ibm and j. P. Morgan chase. But ma says he draws inspiration from another u. S. Corporation should we hope in the next 50 years the world changes because of that. We want to be bigger than walmart, bigger, it is not just the size, we want to learn and change the business in the last century. We hope 15 years later to say this is a company like microsoft. Like ibm, they changed and shaped the world. Alibabas platform sold 259 billion in goods last year and the vendors were responsible for 60 of all packages shipped in china. Alibaba helped Small Businesses connect to new customers and in turn buttressing chinas middle class, that is the reason investors are pushing for shares, willing to pay more than the amount set by the company. But ma did not want to disappoint shareholders and he wanted them to make money and also wanted to avoid the disaster with facebook. The stocks two hours after the open, carefuling mat inly buyin 92. 70 a share. And showing jack ma as the richest man in china. But his fight to grow alibaba is set after the little guy. The hero i had was forest gump. And i watched the movie before i came here again. For before coming to new york, i watched the movie again, telling me that no matter, you are you, no matter what changes. And im still the guy 15 years ago. Alibaba of course is now far bigger. For nightly business report, im Kayla Tausche in new york. Well, yahoo investors were not as enthusiastic today. Yahoo owns merely a quarter of alibaba but sold 121 million shares after the initial offering price of 68 a share, not at the opening price which went up to almost 93. So no surprise shares of yahoo ended down nearly 3 on the day but yahoo could collect about 5 billion in profits. So should you own shares of alibaba in your portfolio . Lets find out from max wolf, a partner at an investment and Research Firm in new york city. Welcome back, max, good to have you. What do you say . Should i buy this stock if i can get it on monday, tuesday, wednesday of next week . Well, it depends on what your time horizons are, but that is a bit disappointing to answer a question with a question. So what i would say is at 93plus dollars where it sets right now you really dont have much upside here. So we believe that the 93 the company is fully priced to have a fantastic year ahead. Which means you will take a lot more risks than youre likely to get in the upside reward in the next 12 months. We love the company, it will do big things, the price said they already did that and we have to wait and see. So some investors may say, max it had so much momentum today it may hit 100 next week or next month or so and they dont want to miss out on that run. What would you say to them . I would say they could be right. It is the fomo factor in this business, fear of missing out. I would say the following, you have to be at least as frightened getting involved in something, costing money as you are about missing out. In other words, there is huge returns at the casino but you dont go ahead and put the deed to your house on the roulette wheel, even though you know you wont get 361, but what you dont do is lose your house. So what i hear you say is no, it is not a good buy at the price, selling at Something Like 20 tims the numbers on sales can be believed. So there is no fundamental issue you have with the company itself or with the Corporate Structure under which investors are actually buy shares in a Holding Company in the cayman islands. That is not what worries you o that is the question, i do like the company, i believe it has a bright future. So you can not actually buy shares in buy shares in a variable entity. Under chinese law, a foreigner, like the people buying on the New York Stock Exchange cannot buy these shares. So off the coast of the caribbean, off the u. S. Here, you buy shares in that company which has an underlying contractual relationship with alibaba. I do think it is probably okay. Weve seen it about 100 times, only two of those times have blown up. But i do believe because there is extra complication that makes me more sensitive to at least want a bit of a discount or at least not want to pay a large premium. Let me ask you this, max, because i saw your big report on alibaba, youve researched a lot on it. Do you believe this company has the capacity to really keep up this growth rate and to be, and compete against a walmart or ibm even . So it is a great question, and well give our report for mvp, so folks who want it could get a report for themselves, may be a cure for imsomnia, but i believe it will grow into a competitor. However, i think the way the average american will deal with the company is through companies here that they have been buying. Companies like lift, which provides cab or limited type transportation. Kabam, whose online games are played by people. I think well see them have a bigger role in the future here to the business to Business Front where in the retail sales, merchants will buy in bulk in a nice easy way and have those products produced elsewhere brought here and have them sold. Max, thank you of manhattan venture partners. As we continue our coverage on alibaba, the alibaba founder jack ma says the companys growth will be a win for Small Businesses here in the u. S. So how will those businesses see the gains and if theyre the winners who lose his . Kate rogers takes a look. Reporter for some companies, selling products on alibaba has not been as easy as advertised. Will willis listed the shirts he designed and manufactured for the clothing last year on the site. He went to alibaba to get international exposure. What he got instead was an inbox full of spam. I was getting emails like we want to buy 100,000 shirts from you, were ready to purchase right now. And some have even been outright scams. We took the credit card information and even took a picture of their id. And it ended up being a stolen credit card. The ceo mark joseph says he gets about 80 new International Customers a day from alibaba, most of whom like doing business with the american companies. The interest is, we are u. S. Based giving us a lot of credibility. Reporter now alibaba doesnt break down how many customers it partners with domestically, but breaks down around the globe it it. It has gotten a lot of attention around the u. S. Reporter but that access is not enough to make willis renew his contract with the company. Just do your Due Diligence and be careful. As copresident of oracle, 52yearold saffer katz ran finance, while mark herd ran science elements. Their roles will be the same. Ill continue doing what i do for the last several years and they will continue what they do over the last several years. Reporter still, the history of ceos successfully sharing titles are mixed. Companies only do this on very rare occasions. If there is some degree of a board battle, or a transition, or if something is taking place or if they grew up together like goldman sachs. And frankly at goldman sachs, one of these coceo arrangements didnt work. Reporter that would be when paulson pushed out his coceo.
