Ready to compromise. Looking to 2016 themselves, republican senators ted cruz, rand paul and mark arubio. Looking to burnish their credentials with conservative activists rather than independents. This is what the younger mr. Paul recently told hbo host bill mahr. Why i have decided now we have to do something is, i think that isis is a threat to our embassy and to our consulate, and i think we need to defend american interests. There are lines that have to be drawn. Its not just rand paul, ted cruz is ramping up his conservative rhetoric. On november 10th, he tweeted that, quote, net nutrality is obama care for the internet, unquote. Meaning its fundamentally defective. In another press release, he stated that executive amnesty by president obama to Illegal Immigrants currently residing in the United States would, quote, create a constitution alacrities that demands action by congress to restore the separation of powers. Unquote. Men mark arubio, already popular with conservative donors. In january, senator rubio will release a book with a title straight out of a president ial campaign factory. American dreams restoring Economic Opportunity for everybody. Question, will House Speaker boehner and mcconnell be able to control the president ial wannabes . All three are in the United States senate. John, the race for the republican nomination, nobody has more than 15 . If you want the nomination, you dont worry about independents in a general election. You excite the base, the tea party, the conservatives, the activists, the libertarians. And this is exactly what cruz is doing. I think its a correct strategy as a nomination strategy. Its risky in the general election, but this race is so wide open, john, that the guy that is going to do well, the individual, i think, hes got to show real passion and fire and energy and ability to communicate and there is no doubt i would put cruz in the top level there and the second behind him is rand paul. One of those, two i think, is going to get to the finals. Okay, the others. Storming into the freshman, senators like tom cat ron of arkansas and joni ernst of iowa, darkhorse candidates for 2016. Including those outside of congress, come in what is sure a crowded field. Other president ial candidates include john bowlson, jeb bush, [ indiscernible ] , chris christie, paula piorina, lindsay graham, mick huckaby, bobby jindal, john caseic, mike pent, rick perry, rob portman, mitt romney, paul ryan, rick santorum, john thune, scott walker. Question, is there a front runner, eleanor . We started off with tom cotton. I would look at him for 2020. He has a lot of good credentials, harvard, iraq veteran you, but he won an election and that is his first term in the u. S. Senate. Joni ernst, lets see how she develops. Theyre not running in 2016. All the other crew, everyone is dreaming of the white house, and i think if you look at the trio running from the senate, cruz, rubio and rand paul, theyre all going to use the senate floor to advance their canned dates. I think ted cruz is go candidacies. I think ted cruz will go to the house and do freelancing amongst conservatives. He is the most disliked member of the u. S. Senate by his colleagues, by both democrats and republicans. Rand paul is a serious legislator. And i think he does have a potential of knitting together the different wings of the Republican Party. And marco rubio, i dont think will run if jeb bush runs. Hes his protege. If jeb bush is make noises to get in, he would be a serious contender. How old is cotton . Oh, 30s, early 40s. Huh . Late 30s, early 40s. I dont know his exact. Hes not going to run in 2016. Right. And hes not in the senate a day yet. Thats right. But barrack obama. He was in the senate for two years. That field is saturated with a huge amount, you know, different candidates. Its going to be interesting to see how rapid paul tries to put himself rand paul tries to put himself into the establishment, more Foreign Policy realists. Ted cruz, obviously, trying to galvanize the conservative base. Hes not going to be controlled by the senate house leadership. Then when you look at marco rubio, hes more quiet since the reform immigration efforts failed, on the surface trying to build relationships. There is a vast other field as well. Its going to be an interesting race. No clear frontrunner . No clear frontrunner. And Susana Martinez as well. I think new mexico, she mean in the running. Okay. The latest Washington Post gop 16 poll is in october. Rand paul at 15 ; jeb bush, 12 . I dont think that is reflected in the conversation. No. And hes stronger than people think. Mike huckaby at 12 . No other contender topped single digits. Does that surprise you . If there is any surprise for me is that mr. Bush, governor bush is only at 12 and seems to me he, in terms of the opportunity to the elect of presidency is the strongest candidate that the republicans have. I think he will show that over the next year or so. I am convinced with the modern party. And he can be an establishment party. Too many people talking. Jeb bush could be the establishment entry in the finals. Crib bush . Him or romney or christie. You have a name you dropped out there that is important, john. That is mike huckaby. The conservatives worried, theyre enormously large in iowa. Hes strong. The jewish vote is going to move and money is going to move toward the republicans because of the israeli situations. Huckaby is strong with them and hes a conservative. Is huckaby wrestling with the stition . I think hes looking toward it. Yeah. And you have seen groups get together. Have you seen him speak to the subject in. He took a trip in poland. The three trips and three is. Like romney did . Ireland, italy, and israel. That is what they used to do. Hes yeselling with it ysidro wrestling with it enough to get attention to his radio show. He may do well in iowa, but i would be willing to bit pat money that mike huckaby wont be the republicanination nomination. Somebody going to come out of the group. Huckaby, rand paul and cruz, i think, that is the populous side. Something there is going to be in the finals against an establishment. Why is there no mention here i have to disagree with you. The Republican Party couldnt live and be in the outside of the white house again for another eight years which, is what you have to assume if its another democrat coming. They have been out of power, spike, for a long so to speak, for a long time. They put up an extreme conservative. Have you ever been to iowa or South Carolina . I have, sumly, and i life actually, and i left quickly. What is the early primary state . The iowa caucuses, New Hampshire primary. Who is ahead in New Hampshire . I think christie would do well in New Hampshire. His personality fits them nicely. Jeb bush 15 ; christie, 12 . I am telling you, john, when i went to New Hampshire, dole was over 50. Nobody has more than 15 . And that produced almost nervous tremors throughout the population. For the republican. It was totally unpredictable the way he slashed dole. The republican. New hampshire. And its ridiculous. I take that back, pat. Im not characterizing obama as ridiculous. Theyre going to rich each other to shred. Odditious. Bob dole got the nomination in 96. Sure. And we have to remember that. They were. And enough of this. Were going to return to earth with this. Issue two, wildlife, whoa . This thanksgiving, you were probably glad you were not the turkey. Well, be glad, too, that youre not a lion or a tiger or polar bear. That is because around the globe, animal populations are practically all kinds and are in decline. So said the latest living planet report from the World Wildlife fund that examined trends in more than 10,000 populations of more than 3,000 animal species. Get this. Between 1970 ache and 2010, a span of 40 years, the world populations of mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds and fish fell by 52 . That means that 40 years ago, the sheer number of mammals, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and fish was double what it is now, so said the report. Fresh water species have been hit the hardest. A 76 decline. Maradioen species like sea turtles, sharks, and migratory seabirds. Land mammals declined by 39 . And while animal populations are declining in temporate and tropical regions, the biggest decline is in the prop i coulds. Tropics. Latin america registered 83 decline of species. Guess what species is not in decline at all and is the culprit behind the decline of practically all of the wildlife man. Exploitation of wildlife by mankind is the number one threat to wildlife populations. Exploitation through hunting and overfishing, harvesting fish faster than the oceans can replenish them. The next biggest thrift after exploitation is habitat degradation. Man encroaching on nature by building more, farming more, by exploiting more. Our footprint on the planet is increasing and continues to rise. That means were cutting trees faster than they can grow. Were catching fish faster than they can prereproduce. Were emitting more co2 faster than oceans and trees can absorb. Reporter its more than earth has is humanity. Question, in view of this catastrophic situation, what about going vegan . Would that reduce the strain on wildlife population . I ask you, tom. I dont think the issue is about going vegan. I think the issue is having a broader cognizance across the country, democrat and republican independent. There are real issues against Global Warming. The environment doesnt end there. My father and brother do a lot of stuff, especially on the oceans. One thing theyre telling me is its not just about whales and dolphins and shark, but the food chain. If you are putting mercury into the oceans, its passing up through the fish into mammals and its things were consuming. There are tangible things. The declining figures were looking at are huge. In the public domain, there is a fetish, all Global Warming that ends there. Its counterproductive. What we need is more a public dialogue to say look at the issues. That doesnt have to be partisan. That is a clear issue. And i think a knocking or underrating vegan, you know. Rue vegan . Yes. You are . Absolutely. I am in a National Movement to save animals by becoming a vegan. Wonderful. I have been one for six years now and i recommend it. And what do you think its done to your interest or personality . Its made me once more into the most dynamic character you have encountered in your life. I lost 40pounds in the process, frankly, and i feel terrific. You know. Ill tell you who is happy, my taylor is happy. Tailor is happy. And published 20, 30 years ago, and there are benefits if we lessened our alliance on meat. Reading the report that is put out by the World Wildlife fund makes you cry. There are more elephants poached than are born. We have to create sanctuaries for orphaned elephants elephants. Overfishing and government [ overlapping speakers ] excuse me, government regulation can come into play here and there are a lot of people in the world. John, this report is non specific at all. Its signed back by the members. This is a propaganda piece. No. There is no. Okay. There iso problem. Look what is happening in brazil. Theyre cutting down the rain forest and that. That is the problem. This is propaganda. Were going to rulein it ruminate on that. Yeah. Issue three, so long, teacher. Its a brave new world. Digital learning. The use of Computer Technology platforms for education. Is rapidly changing the way americans are taught in schools and colleges across the nation . The blackboard is giving way to the tablet. Is it new . This is what Digital Learning apcat mimi ito said four years ago. I think the incredibly important function for schools by valuing and formal learning is not to abandon formal learning but we should get them working together in a more coordinated way. Reporter today, four years later, the computerled informality transportation of education has taken hold. The middle School Students type out answers to a question on touchscreens. They instantly know if the students understand the material. I can deal with the problem faster than before. It allows me to change my instruction based on the student needs. Reporter teacher lewis said digital platforms like the ones students use save valuable classroom time. Question, does a Digital Learning revolution risk developing a generation of digitally adept but socially inept drones . Tom rogan. I think there are risks if there are is an overalliance on technology. The key, you have education reform that allows you to have the best teachers rising to the top. The worse teachers removed from the system forcibly, if necessary, and at the same time, fostering an intellectual personality on the part of students. One final example. When you go to college here, you have to take things like math and physics, regardless of your major. And in the United Kingdom when you go to college, you focus on the particular area that youre interested in. That happens to stimulate early personal interest. And i want to endure a classroom recently. There are 60 parents there. He was seated and all of the students were looking at their television. The tablet there are screens. Okay. And i said to the teacher how long . They can stay there for the whole period. We might have a couple of minutes discussion at the end. The teacher inspires people to learn. The teacher is still involved. This is called blended learning. A combination of technology. We live in a technological world, an effort to get technology to everybody. Not just the people who can afford it. You think youre whitewash something. In florida, jeb bush created a Digital Learning council. This is one of his big issues and in florida, you dont graduate high school unless you pay us one course pass one course online. So you know how to operate online. This is not taking over but teaching people to live in the world as it is. Right. And its sharing the goodies of technology with everybody across the digital divide. Its a good thing. In my judgement, its going to dramatically expand the capacity to teach both people in Elementary School and especially in high school. You will have the material presented in the most appealing way. Its a huge plus mr. Us in terms of the way people learn and teaching. Who is making a buck . Getting a High School Education than they ever did. What did the teachers say about it in the General Assembly . They love it. They love it . Absolutely. Why, because they can offload work . Not because they know theyre getting a better job. A better teaching job . Yes. And all of this apparatus . This is extremely well organized and wellthought out presentation online. And. The principle interest on you, taught you. Who would you think of a machine or human be something. Of course, i never had machines, if i may say so. Would have been machines, right . I dont know. For some of the courses, it would have been dramatically better on machines. Dont. Dont you think the teacher is there to evolve . The love of learn something. Let me agree with you. I think the machines replaced in many cases, books. We learned what you read, study and i agree with you about the teacher. The machines, there is no doubt theyre an asset and advantage. Mainly beneficial, though, to folks knowing how to use them and handle them. So those folks its going to increase the divide between folks who dont use them and folks who do. You have five seconds. You must be able to foster social skills because people will never be able to enter the workforce. Right. And not just social relations, but that is critical. We couldnt have the drone situation. Issue 4, thanks but no thanks. A time of war and of terrorism. Suicide bombings, vicious beheadings, bloody civil wars, global alliances gone cold, deadly epidemic, rising cybercrime, mass shooting, chronic underployment. Surging deficits, mounting personal debt, stagnant wages, a shrinking middle class, long, scorching summers, and frigid endless winters. Question, with all of this misery, what can possibly be left for america to be thankful for . I ask you. Tom rogan . Tom. An american citizens. That is my point. Someone who grew up abroad. I mean it genuinely. It sounds cheesy but its true. The United States is still the best place in the world to live with the most opportunities. We need more opportunity culture, we know that, based on income and equality. At the same time, the benefit of a free society of free press, open tolerant society, where everyone comes together, i know this thanksgiving im happy to be here and a citizens. Its a great and special place to be. Amen to that, john. From the day i was born, john, 1938 to 1950, 12 years, 100 Million People were killed in world war ii all the way from france all the way to russia and then a billion people went behind the iron curtain under stalin and under china, under mount sao tong. Millions of people perished and now we have a lot of problems going on. None horrors of the magnitude. We left the bloodiest century, the 20th century. A lot of problems now. If you take the freedom of people in china and Eastern Europe and decolonialization and asia, its a better world. Uhhuh. And mort, the economy has gone flat. Is that something we should be thankful for on this thanksgiving . Not really. If i may say. I call it thank you giving because as a immigrant to this country, its been an absolutely wonderful experience for me. You miss canada . I dont miss canada. You come across the rio grande, too . You know, i would have take know a real trip out there. This provides me an opportunity to salute the canadians watching the show. We have a substantial audience all over canada. Huge number. The president of canada watches. There is a problem here, we dont have a president. Prime minister . We have a Prime Minister. He watches the show . I would hope so. Hes a friend of yours . As it happens, he is a friend of mine. He not only damage tell me but hasnt given the hint he watches the show. I met the man. [ laughter ] how i can be. Thanksgiving. Youre witnessing a fit of selfcontrol. Thankful for that. Thankful you met the Prime Minister of canada. There you go. If i can interrupt the canadian, makebelieve tetea tete. I wanted to add we would have been grateful that were still here debating issues after, what, some 30 years, john . 37. 32 years. And havent had a lot of them. 32. And im older than all of you being so kind to me. You have no reason to boast. You slipped out of here for four or five years. You worked for reagan . Four leaves of absence only, john . Four . Three president ial runs and reagan. What about the time when you were able to boost your intelligence on the show . 24 years out of the 32. And the republican field is wide open, pat, you know. Still time to get in. What were you going to say . As someone in london, england, watching on cnbc with my father, its great to be on the set. Oh, great. That is nice. And light hope cnbc has the wisdom to have carried. Is there anything else to be left on this before we let it go . Before you die before our eyes . Why dont you tell us what youre think something. This is the most upwardly mobile society ever. Okay. And those of us who are immigrants appreciate that and its the most open society. People are just very friendly and courteous, warm, open to talent and friendship. It doesnt get better. Pat . The congress of the United States, republicans and democrats a like, were going to go after a iranian deal coming down. Theyre going to try and impose sanctions on i ran, whether they get a deal or dont get a deal or whether they extend the current negotiations. Uhhuh. The republicans have been yelling and screaming about how president obama has succeeded his authority and is acting like a king. When the new Congress Comes in in january, they will give this president fasttrack authority to conclude a huge trade deal that he can negotiate on his own without having going back to congress because the republicans want that. Theyre willing to let the king have his way. Yeah. Republicans, of course, as usual, are the devils in our midst. [ laughter ] on that positive note. I think in the coming weeks, people should expect greatly increased teases between china and india and india and pakistan in the border relations. Uhhuh. And well, mort. The continued erosion of wages in america amongst american working families, okay s going to be a huge issue Going Forward and will force the government to do something to try and stimulate the economy. The number of people who are getting, whose wages are going down. Uhhuh. Is extraordinary. Its not for the top level. Amnesty for illegals. Help that. I predict despite the tragic setback in the mojave desert, Richard Branson will persevere in his quest to make outer space accessible to tourism o. A timetable, that is lengthier than he hoped and, notice, we said accessible, not affordable. As fort fee. You as for the fee. You have that, pat . Happy thanksgiving weekend. Byebye. This week on Moyers Company the long, dark shadows of plutocracy. These buildings are a whole new level of super, super luxury condo. Blotting out the sunshine in the premier park. Where was the outcry . Housing is a right if we dont get together and do something, well be left with a city thats only accessible to millionaires and billionaires.
