It costs billions of dollars, hours in tv ads now its time for america to vote. Polls open soon and its down to the wire in many races. Searching for clues in the Virgin Galactic crash. Investigators sift through the debris of the spacecraft. Richard branson denies theres a safety problem. Please, dont try this at home, this walking across two chicago skyscrapers wasnt crazy enough. This man did it blindfolded. Welcome to our viewers on Public Television and across the globe. In a few hours the polls will open in the u. S. Midterm elections and americans will decide which party gets control of congress. The biggest prize is the u. S. Senate, where republicans hope to carry enough states to take control. Among the most closely watched contests is kentucky, where republican senator Mitch Mcconnell hopes to hold on to his seat and become majority leader as well. Bbcs north american editor has this report. Picture postcard kentucky, thorough bread racehorses, rolling hills, white picket fences, tranquility. This is the underbelly, poverty, unemployment, hopelessness. And a far more discordant note i cant hardly find no jobs. Rich kids getting richer and poorer keeps getting poorer. Perception is obama years brought no great change. You now have a democratic candidate who wont even mention the president s name. Let alone say whether she voted for him. It isnt about the president. Its about making shower we put kentuckians back to work. And i was actually in 08 a dell bit for Hillary Clinton so it went on but the tactics may be working. Senator Mitch Mcconnell is facing a tough battle. If he wins, he will become the Senate Majority leader and most powerful republican in the land. Good morning, everyone. How are you doing . [applause] we asked him, will that make the washington gridlock better r worse . That will depend on the president. I hope the president will move to the Political Center and we will be able to do business together. At Churchill Downs where they run the kentucky derby, bookies are doing a brisk business. One bet theyre not offering odds on are prospect of democrats and republicans working more closely together, much they might like it. Politicians are leading the country well for a long time. Thats because theyre politicians. We need to make sure we get across party lines and Work Together to make things right. We are not where we need to be but i have hope that we will eventually get to that point. People who come to races like up but end disillusioned. Theres something about it in america at the moment. Six years ago, barack obama spoke about hope. Not so much anymore. Even if theres a clear winner after these midterms, theres a sullen mood with few believing that anything is going to change dramatically in the way the politics is done in the capital. Bbc news, kentucky. Other critical state tomorrow night will be iowa. I spoke to the bbc a short time ago. There you are in the middle of the agriculture heartland of america. Is it too much to say iowa could decide whether its republicans or democrats who control the enate . All of the opinion polls are saying its neck and neck and it will be an extraordinary race. Its for a senate seat that has been occupied for the last 30 years. And i glue up castrating on an iowa farm. She did turn around this race. She got a lot of people thinking about values. She doesnt talk about policies. A lot things that shes got quite uncomfortable views. With that type of campaign, shes won over a lot of voters here as we say in rural iowa. There have been mistakes from the democrats democratic candidate bruce fraley, who comes from this area in brooklyn where i am now. But another er farm land animal that could have been done in for him. Big news across iowa he complained about his neighbors chickens, not directly to his ighbor but made a formal complaint and that changed his mind about him. If he cant get along with his neighbors in the iowan way, how will he represent the state in the senate. These kinds of things, future of this senate race and perhaps the of the senate can be described. You have to love all of that there. Tell me to what except you have been traveling around the country, to what extent is president obama a factor in that race as well . This is the thing. Thats why the sort of personality in politics is here in iowa is a big theme across the country and also this business about this being referendum about the way barack obama has gotten in the country for the last six years or so. There is absence of a really big, overriding issue in these midterm elections, like the economy or health. It boiled down to these things. Personality, politics and out president obama performed. Thats a big part. A lot of people said theyre voting on the way they feel the president has governed the country. Even though he himself is not on the ballot. And here is a place that will put barack obama on the map. This is where caucuses begin and this is where in 2008 he became the man everyone is watching. It could be the place but this time around does in for his part in the senate. I was there and i could tell you its an awful lot colder than it is now. Today was a day of mourning in pakistan for the victims of a massive suicide bombing near the border with india. 60 people were killed in the attack when a suicide bomber detonated his explosive by paramilitary checkpoint. This family lost five of its members in sundays attack. Friends and neighbors tried to control the relatives as they 12ruggled with the atrocities. Among them is this 15 years old. She was lucky to survive the suicide bombing but lost father and wounded mother battling for er life at the local hospital. Translator we wanted to watch the border closing parade. My dad wanted us to leave about the we were excited. We wanted stay right to the end and thats when the explosion appened. These people are trying to make sense of what happened. They want justice. No one should have to die like this and for no reason, says his man. Hundreds of people gathered for the funeral of at least three People Killed in the carnage sunday. A sense of anger among people but more than that, sense of helplessness, about how long will the attack go on and ordinary pakistanis will continue to pay the price for these state of affairs. Families of victims blamed the government for not doing enough to protect lives but officials insist the country is doing all it can to fight extremism and militancy. They know we are doing our duty. Maybe not that well but that were doing our duty went have to look up to the families theyre poor and a lot of dependants and that kind of thing. Unfortunately when youre fighting a war, you have casualties like this. At least three separate jihadi groups in pakistan have said they ordered the attacks. Investigators say it could be a while before the authorities would be able to identify and hopefully take on those responsible for killing so many civilians. Bbc news, lahore. One family who lost too many people in that attack, and for more on this suicide bombing i spoke a short time ago with daniel markey, senior fellow on the council with foreign relations. Three different groups claiming responsibility for the attack. It seems one group that were a link to the Pakistani Taliban. Interesting, daniel, we had a lull in this kind of attack since summer. Why now . We dont know exactly why at this moment but youre absolutely right and you think a lot of us, myself included, assumed when the Pakistani Military began its operations against the Pakistani Taliban in north waziristan, we would see spade of these type attacks almost immediately on the heels of the operations. Instead we saw a lull. The military claimed when they briefed us here in washington they have gone after these groups very hard and the rest of pakistan. They worked with other security agencies to try to track them down to make arrests preempt tively. In this case obviously they failed. One of the criticisms of the Pakistani Military soften being whilst they might launch attacks like the kind they started in june in north waziristan, theres also some kind of tacit complicity. Yes. Do you believe them now when they say that complicity is over . I believe them in the narrow sense. That is i believe that they are legitimately attacking groups that have declared themselves enemies of the pakistani state. But there are many other groups that we the we the United States would consider to be enemies of the world and afghanistan and u. S. Forces in afghanistan and International Terrorists who i think the pakistanis have still not fully come to terms with them. Thats always been the danger, hasnt it, for pakistan, you cant pick and choose the way they wanted to between these groups. Its hard to make a difference between good and bad taliban. Repeatedly they tried to do so. What do you make of the location of this . Its troubling given there was a potential that this suicide bomber could have made his way all the way to the border and he done so, he might conceivably have killed indians as well. And over recent weeks and months we have seen some expanded shelling, ar tellry across the line of control between india and pakistan. The kind of internationalization of this problem was real. As possibility. We didnt see that. I think fortunately he was stopped at the one of the outer security barriers so we avoided that particular problem. But really this just shows that pakistans interm problems are a problem for pakistan, conceivably a problem for india as well. If you go to Something Back to Something Like bombay attacks, again, implication has been that whilst the pakistanis condemn those attacks, they might say we wouldnt have wanted to go to the border in india, youre playing with fire, arent you . Theyre playing with fire. You can talk about that or frankensteins monster. Theyre doing all of these things at once. These are all group thats have grown up. That hasnt changed. Have you not seen a shift there . On certain groups i dont believe we have seen a shift. The group with the mumbai attack is leader. Says hes now leader of another group but its essentially the same thing is out in public giving speeches. Pakistanis have not cracked down on them. Yeah, theyre going after Pakistani Taliban. But not some of these other sectarian groups either. Nutch for coming to explain. Thank you. The evercomplicated relationship between Pakistani Military and Taliban Group said theres information about the crash of the Virgin Galactic spacecraft friday. A safety device designed to slow the vessel down on reentry was activated too early. But they say its too soon to tell if that is way the craft broke apart. Debris has been scatter add cross the Mojave Desert in california where competentant david willis sent us this report. Picking their way through the wreckage, in the california desert, an investigation is under way which could determine not only the future of Virgin Galactic but the space race as a whole. This dusty, desert landscape is now littered with pieces of the spacecraft which fell to earth. This giant part of the tail is just one of those pieces and it came to earth just a few feet from a nearby road. The plan now is to gather all of these pieces in a local laboratory to try to find out what went wrong. Early indications are that pilot error was at least a factor in this disaster, crash investigators now say that a leaver which unlocks the control mechanism for the wings, otherwise known as feathers, was pulled at the wrong time. Was the lock unlocked part of what caused this aircraft to come apart . What we know after it was unlocked, the feathers moved into the deployed position and two seconds later we saw this integration. Thats the fact. We will find out the analysis as part of the investigation. This program has been going on for ten years. Were not going to do anything that takes flisses. Remember, i was planning to go out with my son at the end of february. We wanted to make sure that the test flights were done were done properly and test pilots, brave people that put their lives at risks, to make sure there was some its something that hasnt been spotted, it happened with a test pilot and not with the passenger. Flags the harvey space port have been at halfstaff in mory of michael olsbury, the pilot who died. His colleague, 43yearold peter sigh bolt, somehow managed to survive the disaster and is said to be recovering in hospital after an operation on his arm. His account of the final minutes of the space ship two could prove crucial to the inquirey. So too could footage from multiple cameras fitted on the craft but Officials Say the inquirey could last as long as a year during which a large part of the Space Tourism industry will be on in definite hold. David willis, bbc, in the Mojave Desert. A lot of questions about that crash and about the future of the Space Tourism industry. Youre watching bbc world news america. Still to come on tonights program, where video games and washington collide. One of the industrys top creators are sharing his idea in the hope of shaking up the way hings are done here. The white house has condemned what it calls the illegitimate socalled elections held on sunday into selfdeclared republicans in eastern ukraine. The polls had been widely denounced with the European Union calling them a new obstacle to peace. But rebel leaders have a mandate to negotiate with kiev. Bbcs david stern has the latest for us. The outcome was never in doubt. The acting Prime Minister of the peoples republic won by a land slide. He said he was ready to talk to authorities in kiev, but as an independent state. Translator it is a pritty we still cannot understand policies kiev has taken to us. We have long been ready to talk with kiev. We are looking forward to a ration response from them. The elections raised tensions in the region even, even higher. The e. U. Said the vote was illegal and illegitimate and violated a ceasefire agreement that the separatists had signed in september. But mosquio said the elections were valid. Residents said they simply hoped the election would bring stability to their lives. Translator we hoped for peace for well being and prosperity of the region so everything is fine for us and no one is killed and everyone is alive and well. However, at the moment any hope for peace is a distant one. Fighting continues through the weekend and Ukrainian Army reported a number of their troops killed and wounded. Locals and western journalists also said a large column of fighters and military hardware arrived from the direction of russia. Many fear an escalation in the hostilities. Now the elections are over. David stern, bbc news, kiev. Now to a video game creator whose ideas have become a hot commodity here in washington. One of the most prestigious american think tanks recruited the man behind the wildly successful game call of duty. To help visualize the future of warfare. Coming soon latest installment in the bestselling video game of all time. On my authority now transcending the line between fiction and fact the Creative Force behind the call of duty series dave anthony has come to washington to help predict the nature of future warfare. All of the technology is moving very, very, very quickly. And the government infrastructure that we have is not set up to deal with this. The Atlantic Council hopes giving him a platform inspire policy wonks to think outside the box. The question is, can the imagination used to create a game about war help military Planners Prepare for a real war . And can bringing artists into the conversation help shake up conventional thinking here in ashington. Dave anthonys winning formula combines realistic war scenario with fantasy like taking the potential of the miniature drone a step forward. Maybe a few steps. As much as you have an insect, a camera on it, a little cyanide somewhere, maybe something on its tail, imagine the cameras has official Recognition Software on it. All of this is available right now. Drones on the war path, cunning weapons and powering individuals over state, cyber disaster. Thats the monteith of future threats presented to the audience hollywood style. Its not clear whether video s can offer reallife lessons but theyre popular with soldiers. Apparently also with some Islamic State militants who seemed to reference it and games like it in recruitment videos. Do these guys sit down and play call of duty all day . I dont think so. But i think theyre looking for opportunities to make themselves popular. They can pick anything in Popular Culture to grab on to and they will. Beyond popular and flick productions, dave anthonys vision doesnt seem to different from that of military experts. After all did he consult them. But his way of working is. The style, pace of change of introducing, absorbing, adapting, employing new ideas. Rejecting some. That pace feels right for 21st century of not just movie making but 291st century of military operations. Changing the mindset is the goal, not policy suggestions. Et ready to play, waugh. And as if video games werent enough, this next story had many of us, including me, feeling queasy. A tight rope walk between sky scrapers in chicago is always a challenge but nick went one step further. He did it blindfolded and in very strong winds. Lets do this, baby with that, nick stepped onto a highwire. You guys rock. 588 feet above chicago. With no harness listen to that roar. Or safety net. But what he did have was a rather illtimed suggestion from his dad, via a radio feed. If you can get a chance, give it a bounce so i can watch the reaction. Its moving. I will not give it a bounce. This first breathtaking walk was on a 70foot incline between two buildings. The attempt was broadcast with a 10second delay in case anything went wrong. Of course, it didnt. Oh, man youre in the homestretch, buddy. Instead it took nick wollander just under seven minutes to make it across. Praise you, god. Thank you, jesus. The biggest challenge for 359yearold where the city is notoriously high winds. I think you saw me shaking like a leaf. I wanted make it to the other side. I wasnt going to think twice. I need everybody to be nice and quiet for me, ok. Going just once for nick wasnt enough. Lets get the pole out here, please. Shortly after, he donned a blindfold for a second highwire walk between two towers. Again, with no harness or safety net. This nailbiting crossing took over just one minute and the process nick wollander, fourth generation highwire walker, set two world records. Crazy guy is about right.
