Thats when police were called to the 42hundred block of hull on a call for help. When they got there, police say they found two victims inside the home. Both had been shot. No word this morning on what led to the double shooting. Or who the victims were. Police say theyre waiting to release that information until after theyve contacted family members. Yesterday iowa state announced its firing head football coach paul rhoads after seven seasons. The nail in the coffin came saturday at kansas state. The cyclones blew a 21 point halftime lead, failed to score in the 2nd half, and had an epic collapse in the final 2 minutes. 2 fumbles, and 10 wildcat points. The 3835 loss likely left athletics director Jamie Pollard no choice. Former players. But others say that wont help. And that the problem is bigger than rhoads, blaming the program as a whole. Des moines senior Police Officer luke harden says his automatic license plate reader gives him an extra set of eyes on the road. Itll alert you with a beep. Itll flash on this screen if youre in another program. Send you a quick picture of the plate and a description. So you know what to look for. Officer harden says the fourmounted cameras on his cruiser alert him of all violators. Its not always stolen cars. Sometimes its scofflaw violators, as we call them, which are habitual parkers and things like that. Rain or shine, day or night, whether a car is moving or stopped, the license plate readers are always recording information. Thats why parking lots are popular spots for patrolling officers. Ill go to several apartment complexes where we found stolen cars before and just go through there and read all those cars sitting through there. Not all the time obviously, but a lot of the time well sse one sitting there. Sometimes its just out in the middle of nowhere, but sometimes its just out in plain site in a parking lot with a lot of other cars. But as anyone who deals with technology knows computers are not perfect. Sometimes itll read a plate out of iowa, and itll say its stolen out of a different state. The technology has been part of the Des Moines Police department for nearly three years, two years in sioux city, its coming to cedar rapids in the coming months, Dubuque Police say theyre looking into it, and Waterloo Police say its not Cost Effective at this point. Des Moines PoliceSergeant Paul parizek says their two cruisers equipped with the nearly 30thousand Dollar Technology has recognized nearly 75hundred offenders since 20 12 ranging from parking violators to even sex offenders and helped recover at least 30 stolen vehicles. Its been incredibly useful for us in terms of being able to maximize our time on the streets. The technology can do what we can do about 100 times faster. But critics say its an ivasion of privacy recording your every movement. Finding the balance between the publics right to know and your right privacy has been an issue. The American Civil Liberties union even filing lawsuits in four states. Here in iowa aclu legislative director dane schuman says innocent people might be concerned information could fall into the wrong hands. The main concern the aclu has with automated license plate readers, is whats done with the information after its accumulated by law enforcement. But Des Moines Police say the license plate reader is governed by iowa law invasion is minimal and information is erased after six months. The problem that can arise is that the information is stored, archived and used to track movement of innocent individuals who havent done anything wrong over time. Regardless of privacy concerns Des Moines Police believe the benefits outweigh the treats recalling this incident where a virginia reporter and photographer were killed and police found this man moments through the use of this good morning.
