The special as you probably know, art can be uplifting. And for a group of people in the boston area, its their own creativity thats harry smith takes a look at the art of the possible. On a recent afternoon artist Scott Bennett discussed his work with several admirers. I wanted to see what it would like if i did a starburst pattern on the center of the page. Across the room artist kitty zen held fans in thrall. So this is kind of what energizes me, what makes me feel kind of tuned in the art in this pop up gallery in cambridge massachusetts is notable for one very important reason. Each artist is either homeless or disabled. When this opened up, and you came in and you saw your stuff up on the wall, what was it like . I walked in and i see this banner with a picture of myself and a little bio, and its the first thing i see when i walk in the door and i was just like awestruck. Kitty zen has been homeless since high school. Shes battled depression anxiety and alcohol abuse. She used to sell her art from a blanket in boston common. Youre not on the blanket anymore. Nope. The art speaks volumes. Giving voice to a choir of otherwise go unnoticed but this is not an altruistic enterprise. This is a business. One of our goals is to reinvent social enterprise and create jobs instead of handouts. Because that is the ultimate dignity. Liz powers is the ceo and founder of art lifting. She been working with the homeless for nine years. I think my main goal is to give people their first break because they havent had a break. Artlifting markets the art and splits the proceeds with the artists just like in a gallery. Scott bennet was in a shelter when someone told him about liz. Drawing since he was a kid art was about all he had left. Its turned into more than i expected scott has housing now and hope for the future. Just realizing the talents around us and that everyone can contribute. cause i think thats often ignored. Art can inspire us, for a growing number of homeless and disabled its providing them shelter. Harry smith. Nbc news cambridge stick around, the agribusiness good afternoon. This is the agribusiness report. Im david geiger. The Iowa Executive Branch is still after its save initiative. At the Agribusiness Association of iowa showcase and conference yesterday. Lieutenant governor kim reynolds was speaking on some of the ag issues in iowa. She spoke mostly on the governors proposal funding education and Water Quality until 2049. In 2009 a 1 percent sales tax was approved for 20 years for school infrastructure. The governor wants to extend it another 20 years. Guaranteeing the first 10 Million Dollars of annual growth to schools. And using the extra growth for Water Quality funding. He estimates it would make 20 point seven billion dollars for schools. And four point seven billion for Water Quality. But the proposal is struggling against the legislative branch. Reynolds says theyre willing to compromise to get it through. Reach out to your legislators and encourage them to work with us. Its a framework, were willing to look at different ideas, different options, or certainly if they have a better idea that can generate were more than happy to work with them. But there is a sense of urgency and we just kind of say dont let perfect be the enemy of good. Reynolds says they think with designated funds, scientific based programs, dealing with absentee landowners, and communities across the state. The new initiative would end criticism of iowas Water Quality goals. She adds Water Quality is not just agriculture, its point source as well in the wasde report yesterday. Corn imports are projected 10 million higher. And soybean endings stocks are up 10 million. But the markets dont seem to be reacting much. A new Budget Proposal wants to slice up crop insurance. On tuesday. President obamas suggested a ten year. 18 billion dollar cut to the federal crop it was just a couple months ago congress rejected three billion in cuts in an omnibus spending package. The request also includes Meat Inspection fees under the food safety and modernization act. As well as an increase in Agricultural Research funding.
