Good afternoon. Im sonya heitshusen. Last night we all went to bed not knowing who won the democratic caucus. Today a victor was finally declared. Hillary clinton was the leading vote getter. But by the narrowest of margins. The final tally from the Democratic Party gives Clinton Sanders 49pointsixpercent. Thats the closest vote in iowa Democratic Party history. The party says 171thousand democrats turned out to vote. To secure that victory hillary luck of a coin toss. Six times clinton reportedly won coin tosses at with sanders. The sanders camp says it doesnt have a problem with the coin toss tiebreaker. Those are the rules and they knew them going in. But since the race was so close, the campaign is asking the Democratic Party to double check its numbers. The sanders folks are asking to look at the hard copy of the results from each precinct. It wants to compare the count to make sure it matches what was recorded. Officials say it isnt a question of integrity, but rather, getting it right. 14 46 35 were all human, we make mistakes and so what were saying is lets make sure that we look at all 1681 actually logged in paper reports of there wasnt a human error made because it so close that could make a difference 55 we tried to contact the iowa Democratic Party. The doors to the office were locked and Party Officials could not be reached for comment. The Republican Party of iowa is reporting a record smashing turnout. And a smashing success for texas senator ted cruz. He was declared the winner early last night. Donald trump finished three points behind him in second. Marco rubio was one point behind trump in third. Ben carson. Rand paul and jeb bush rounded out the next tier. Followed by carly fiorina. John kasich. And mike huckabee, who dropped out of the race last night. Chris christie, Rick Santorum and jim gilmore were at the bottom of the results. More than 180thousand republicans caucused last night. Smashing the previous record high by 50percent. The republican caucuses werent with out controversy of their own. Political director dave price joins us now with more the lingering questions remain to be answered here. The campaigns are focused on New Hampshire now. One week from today voters there go to the polls. Heres a snap shot of the race there. Starting with the democrats. According to an average of polls over the last week by real clear politics. Bernie sanders has an 18point lead over clinton. One poll has clinton with six points of him. But another gives sanders a 33 point lead. On the republican side donald trump is the clear front runner right now. Hes getting an average of 33 percent of the vote. Hes followed by ted cruz and john kasich in a near tie for second. Then jeb bush and marco rubio in a tie for fourth place. A beaming ted cruz hit the campaign trail early in New Hampshire today. Cruz told a crowd there that iowans proved last night that pollsters and the media were wrong about his campaign. His says its New Hampshires turn to do the same. 55133 but last night, the men that this election is not going to be decided by the media, that this election is not going to be decided by the lobbyists and the washington cartel. That its going to be decided by the grassroots, its going to be decided by the men and women here in this room, its going to be decided by the men and women across this country who take so seriously their responsibility of vetting the candidates. Cruz says you can expect to hear more attacks on him because hes now proven he is the man to beat. A third place finish last night for marco rubio was almost as good as a win. Rubio doubled his poll numbers finishing closer to first place than he did to 4th in iowa last night. Today he took his momentum to New Hampshire as well with a familar message for those voters. Its not just about winning one election, its about growing the basis of limited government and Free Enterprise and a Strong National defense. We need to unify the conservative movement and the Republican Party. I can do that better than anyone thats running. Rubio had more total votes in 3rd place last night in iowa than Rick Santorum had when he won the caucuses in 2012. Hillary clinton won iowa. But she moves into New Hampshire an underdog. She campaigned in nashua, New Hampshire this morning. She bragged about her win in iowa. And says she has realistic expectations on how shell do in Bernie Sanders backyard next week. I care a lot about this state. I view it as being the first in the nation primary for a reason. I know that they tend to favor their neighbors. Thats the pattern, the history of the primary, and senator sanders is a neighbor, but i think we will have a good contest talking about what results we can produce, what our records have been, both in domestic policy, security, and i think the people of New Hampshire will get a chance to really evaluate both of us. And i feel good about my prospects. Clintons poll numbers are much better in the early polling in states that vote after New Hampshire. Bernie sanders arrived in New Hampshire late last night. And isnt slowing down. This afternoon he told a crowd that his close second place finish last night is proof of what hell do next week and in november.
