A centuryold church in Downtown Des Moines faces demolition after City Council Members voted earlier this week not to intervene. The owners of the property want to demolish the building so they can sell it to a developer. But historic preservationists want to save it. Channel 13s Reid Chandler is following this story and joins us live from outside the Historic Building with more. This building at 811 crocker street used to be the home of burns United Methodist church, the oldest africanamerican congregation in the years, its sat empty, collecting dust and serving as a home for bats and squatters, while the church tried to sell it. Theyve finally got a buyer. But some people in town dont like the idea theyre selling. Angela lewis pastor, burns United Methodist church 22 32 david barzen president , Des Moines Historical Society 43 52 100 years of history lives inside of this former church at 811 crocker street. We had to move because the building was. Obviously in disrepair. Some ceilings coming down, some mortars coming loose. Angela lewis pastor, burns United MethodistChurch Pastor angela lewis of burns United Methodist church says for the past five years, theyve been waiting for a buyer to take this building over. The congregation didnt want to move, but things just kept happening one after another, and we didnt have the resources to keep up with the demand of refurbishing or restoring the place. Angela lewis pastor, burns United Methodist church on the market for the past five bite. Pastor lewis says there was little interest until recently, when hubbell reality came forward. But theres one condition. We just feel that before Historic Buildings are torn down in des moines, there should be enough time given to save them, or rescue them, somehow. At least equal to the amount of time that it originally took to build them 100 years ago. David barzen president , Des Moines Historical Society hubbell has agreed to buy the property, if the church will demolish the building first. For preservationists like david barzen of the Des Moines Historical Society, its a matter of honoring our citys humble beginnings. Its one of the few structures that we still have in Downtown Des Moines that actually reaches back to our ancestors. And weve lost so much already, and they continue to tear down those Historic Structures that give us that sense of just hard to see another one go by. David barzen president , Des Moines Historical Society because the building is on the National Register of historic places, the church needed a thumbsup from city council to bring a wrecking crew in. That thumbsup came monday night, in a sixtoone vote. Something barzen thinks is a mistake. We get a little tired of people coming in with demolition permit requests in the morning and having it torn down by noon, and never giving it a chance to be preserved, or saved, or salvaged, or anything like that. David barzen president , Des Moines Historical Society for pastor lewis and her congregation, selling this property will do wonders for her churchs ministry. Its going to help us with our outreach ministries. Weve got some things lined up, some goals and visions for this year. Trying to reach the neighborhood were in, and trying to reach des moines. Were excited, its always hard to say goodbye, but the future always looks good because sometimes youve got to say goodbye before you can go on. Angela lewis pastor, burns United Methodist church meanwhile, historic esvionists on standby, pinf miracle. I would lovto see somebody step forward with an interest in ving this to another locaoand i would think th euld give thought to allowingat to happen. David barzen president , Des Moines Historical Societyw its too late for the Historical Society to stop the urch from molishing this building. They t the approval they needed frocity Council Monday night. But eyre here now giving a public tour of the building, and theye hoping to get enoughtention on it that someone ll swings. His film received 12 nominations at this mornings oscar announcements including best picture and best director. But one notable director didnt make the list. Sot dave karger fandango if there was one big shock for me today, it was the fact that ridley scott did not get nominated for best director for the martian. That film did pick up recognition for best picture and best actor for matt damon. Other leading men include Michael Fassbender for his portrayal of steve jobs. Bryan cranston for trumbo. Last years winner eddie redmayne. And this years favorite leonardo dicaprio. Sot dave karger fandango i think leonardo might be too much in the lead, particularly because his movie, the revenant, got the most nominations today. No surprises in the best actress category Cate Blanchett is nominated for carol. Jennifer lawrence for joy. 50year veteran Charlotte Rampling gets a nod for the film 45 years. Alicia vikander getsin for the danish girl. And then theres the frontrunner. Brie larson has the best chance to win for room. There is a crop of deserving perfomers in this years best supporting actor category. But there were audible cheers when Sylvester Stallone was announced as one of them. Sot Leonard Maltin film critic i was happy to see Sylvester Stallone on that list because he gives a great performance. There are always snubs, and this year the talk is about racial bias. For the second straight time, there are no people of color in any of the acting categories. And many found it puzzling that the academy filled only eight of ten slots for best picture. Sot dave karger fandango some worthy movies were left out, most notably straight outa compton. Sot Leonard Maltin film critic i was sort of rooting for straight outa compton. Sot Cheryl Boone IsaacsAcademy President its a little disappointing. Right .
