Following a standoff in the middle of a highway. 39year old Michael Wanchanic is in the polk county jail tonight. Charged with two counts of first degree murder. His arrest came after a four hour standoff in the middle of highway 141. Justin surrency joins us now with more on this developing story. Sonya this all began on monday afternoon. With a grim discovery inside a home along i235 on the west side of des moines. Inside this home in the 39hundred block of Center Street police found the bodies of a man and a woman. Along with two small children who were unharmed. Weve since learned the bodies were those of 36 year old bryon howard and 31 year old heather belieu. Postings. Howard and belieu were engaged. Authorities still arent confirming who the children in the home were. Or who their parents are. Hours after the discovery of the bodies police named Michael Wanchanic as a person of interest and asked for the publics help in finding him. Thanks to a tip call from maxwell resident chris charron. Police did find wanchanic last night. Wanchanic was spotted at a Convenience Store in woodward. When Police Caught up to him on highway 141 his vehicle died out in the middle of the road. Sparking a four hour standoff with police. Just before 10 30 last night that standoff came to an end with wanchanic surrending peacefully. Police say wanchanic was armed during the standoff but never threatened police. While police eventually arrested the man in question and charged him with two counts of first degree murder. It may not have happened had it not been for a random encounter and near accident along highway 210 near woodward. The car kind of lurched up there and i had to check up and then whatever the 5 miles to woodward and then it happened again and this was a on my breaks but his rear end of the car was in front of my face and thats when i saw the plates. And i dont remember saying the letters i just saw it and picked up the phone and said siri call 9 11. Wanchanics First Court Appearance is scheduled for thursday at 8 30 am. Des Moines Police are still looking for a gunman responsible for a deadly shooting on court avenue. It happened last weekend, and doing something about the violence that area. Edmanuel perez was killed in the shooting early sunday. Another man was seriously injured. City Council Memebers called on local bar and Business Owners to pitch in and hire more security. And now they are. Reid chandler joins us live from court avenue where steps are resafety. Hey reid. S, the shooting sunday bars were plenty of people wergunshots wourt center, which housbars. The buiourt paying for this is in response to the incidents over the weekend. We are wanting to maintain the publics sense of safety over the court avenue area, until the city of des moines can come court center will be paying for two, offduty Police Officers to patrol the area during the peak hours of 11 30 pm and 2 30 am thursday through saturday. Thats going to begin this thursday. But building manager matt funk says hes not sure when it will end. He says that extra security will definitely be around between now and january first. But theyre hoping the city will step in at that point with a better plan. Heres the tricky part no one knows exactly what the city will do. Officials say theyre discussing options, but Council WomanChristine Hensley told us in an interview monday, she thinks the businesses need to help pay for more security down there as well. One thing she does agree on is adding more lights and security cameras to the area. Things were talking about right now would be additional lighting; we have gone through and done an audit for lighting. Also cameras i know in talking with chief wingert, hes looking at, you know, what would it cost to add significant number of additional cameras down theyd have to be monitored, or there would be specific times where we would monitor those. 01 25 guys the building manager also told me today theyre planning to add lights and cameras. Nats water during World War Two home to a prisoner of war camp which housed a total of 10 thousand prisoners over two years. 1429 when word came that the germans were going to be brought to america to help with the labor needs which were huge because out men are away fighting a war. 1747 there were labor needs galore here mdash; helping the American Farmers hemp plant. One of the prisoners eduard kaib was homesick at christmas and made a small nativity scene. Camp officials were so impressed, they asked him to build another for christmas of 1945. He and five other prisoners used wood. Cement. And plaster and then painted the characters of the natvivity. 1341 the prisoners started with a piece of wood,, they placed coat after coat of cement. The other figures covered with a coat of plaster. Painted the various colors. Algona was to never sell this display and show it free of charge each christmas. The display got a major make over just a few years back. Its now run by the algona first United Methodist church. 1552 its a labor of love for all of us, it takes 97 volunteers to come in for 2 hour time slots in the month of december. Across iowa there were ten branch pow camps, with the main camp in algona.
