Its hard to miss going in or out of downtown. And it appears beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The kathedral church, located in the historic sherman hill neighborhood, says its hoping to save the display that neighbors have complained about. Channel 13s Reid Chandler joins us live from the corner of ml king boulevard and cottage grove. Reid, the flags really stick out there. But you say its the giant globe people were complaining about . Thats right, these flags have been on the property for several years now, and Church Leaders say they never heard a complaint. Late this summer, they added a giant globe to the display. But the reason you dont see that in the middle right now is because it blew over earlier this week during wednesdays Severe Weather. The church moved it to their parking lot after that, but the city is saying that reinforces their decision to order everything here be taken down. Kenney linhart founding pastor, the kathedral 11 19 its a flag display being changed today from american flags in honor of veterans day back to its original purpose, of showcasing over 30 nations the kathedral churchs ministry has touched. Well their nations weve been in, worked in, or the people from our neighborhood that are from those nations represented in our church. Kenney linhart founding pastor, the kathedral founding pastor Kenney Linhart says for the past four years, hes taken care of this grassy median in front of his church, adding a bit of art along the way. We lease this property from the city, and our intention was to have the nations represented, and the globe, and also the flags. And then eventually, to put an oversized podium, representing speaking to the nations and iowa does that, through the caucuses, and the political arena, and also spiritually, from the churches here. And to be a neutral message of us speaking to the nations. And it was an art display. Kenney linhart founding pastor, the kathedral but some people didnt like the art display. Especially once linhart added the giant globe late this summer. You know, ive received some complaints and concerns expressed by the citizens of sherman hill, regarding the globe on that triangle there. Chris hensley Des Moines City Council Council Woman Chris Hensley says once the city did some digging on the property. They found the kathedral never got the approval needed to place public art on the land. He was in violation of that, he had not gone through the appropriate approval, and did not have the authority to place those items on that property. Chris hensley Des Moines City Council after Severe Weather blew the globe over earlier this week, linhart decided to move the sculpture to the kathedrals parking lot. Where he says itll stay, if the city will let the flags continue to fly. Its a beautiful way to come into the city and see that were just not a bunch of farmers, but were an international city, as well. I dont think that the misgivings or the offenses of maybe one, or two, in the minority, should drive whats pleasurable to the majority. Kenney linhart founding pastor, the kathedral linhart says despite certain complaints, the Sherman Hill Neighborhood Association is voicing support for the art display. The citys order to remove it all by december. Of course, even if youre not a resident of sherman hill, if you want the flags here to stay, you can voice your support to City Council Members as well. Meet our newest golden apple award winner, a norwalk teacher who went the extra mile for one of her students. A magical vacation nearly became they took a trip to florida to see mickey and minnie at disney world. But they ended up encountering another film character. Jaws. Brad hanson has that story. Shark attacks rarely have any bearing on life here in iowa. So when Holly Petersen and her family were planning a trip to florida, it wasnt something they really thought about. But her niece did. Before they left, she lamented to her aunt im really scared of sharks, so im not going to go in the water, but ill still pick up seashells. Petersen did what she could do calm her niece down. We told her that there were no sharks in florida to calm her down, she said. In hindsight, that probably wasnt the best idea. It wouldnt be, because her relative, jill kruse, would soon way. All of a sudden, this big wave came up and jill fell, petersen said. But she had yet to really grasp what had just happened. She went down to grab her calf, but i thought she was falling because of the wave. And she said she yelled out for me, she said, holly save me, she said. But petersen thought jill had simply fell. So i said, just stand up, and just when i was finishing that sentence, the tail came up and whipped her in the face, and she pushed it away. And i was like, you know, just everything goes through your mind. Im like, whoa, thats a huge freaking. Thats a shark and then i saw blood pool around her, so i went and grabbed her arm. And you know, youre running back to the shore, but it feels like youre running in place. All the while, petersen was frantically yelling for help, all the while, still trying to deal with what she had just witnessed. When theyre writing everything down, they were saying its a 6 to 7 inch laceration, and i was saying, no, its worse than that, i mean, her entire calf was hanging off of her leg. Kruse was taken away in an ambulance to a hospital, where she would spend the rest of her vacation. But if not for petersens quick actions, it couldve been much worse. Shortly after kruse was taken away, petersen was approached by a news crew in florida, the reporter calling her a hero, a title she still struggles with. I dont feel like anyone else in my position would do anything differently. I mean, she had sheer terror in her eyes, so the only thing that was going through my head was, i gotta get her out of there. It was either, run back without her and watch her get gobbled up, or get her out of there. So you dont really have anytime to think about it. And while she may struggle with that title, kruses family is certainly grateful she was so selfless in that moment. The family telling her, a lot of thank yous. I mean, what is there to say.
