Writing from methodist hospital, 58 yearold rick rauzi saying on facebook quote i have to say that yesterday i came as close to death as i ever want to be. Not to be melodramatic, but its a heavy thing to actually say goodbye to your wife and kids and face death alone. I shouldnt have made it. But he did make it. Thanks to these two guys. 18 45 44 it started off like any other day. But catching fish and having a good time would soon give way to a rescue rescue mission. After damian bells son konnor said he heard someone screaming for help. 18 48 06 it was hard to make out anything besides geese really at that point. We said buddy, i think its just the geese. But the screaming continued. The conditions were such that you couldnt see anything across the lake, and it was snowing really hard. So damian and jesse left their boys with a phone and told them to stay put. 18 50 0613 we knew the kids were safe where they were because of the testing of the ice we had done. We put them both in one shack so that they could be with each other. not knowing what they were getting themselves into. The two men got into a truck and drove beach and its 50 feet of open water and then about ten feet of ice and then you see the gentlemen in the water. At that point he still had enough strength and energy, he could raise his hand to point out where he was so where were able to see him real clearly. The nearby cage full of canoes was locked. 18 52 2234 we ended up having to forcibly move some of the gate to get through it. He made it through the gate, was able to then stand up a canoe on his own, stack it up and actually stack it up over the top of the fence. With nothing but a rope and a canoe. Damian made his way towards rauzi. 18 56 1126 i was able to tie the rope around his body, i got it under both arms, tied it off around his chest and was able to back away from the boat and pull him up as far as i could. Hindsight now i think i kept getting snagged on his camera. and stayed with him until the authorities were able to come and get both of them out. 18 53 2539 it was all fairly instinctual to be honest with you. We never had a plan. We never set out and said lets get this canoe out, lets get jesse in there because hes smaller, lets you know jesse lift it up over the fence. Damian take off before i get back. Any of it. They just did it. And Richard Rauzi is alive because of their heroic actions. The fishermen call the whole thing a humbling experience and say they think anyone else in a similar situation would have acted the way they did. Icy conditions likely played a role in a deadly crash early this morning. It happened on i35 near cumming. The truck driver apparently lost control and rolled into the ditch. The driver was killed in the crash. The dot shut down the interstate for three hours to remove the wreckage. A much more minor crash also a garbage truck clipped a light pole.
