Frank was the first gifford in his family to ever graduate from high school, much less go to college. And hes always given enormous credit to the city of bakersfield and to homer beatty. And frank was majoring in shop at the time. So he got ahold of frank, got ahold of his psyche and realized that he could be something great, and he certainly went on to be nice to see cody there by the way. Im sorry to hog all of this. But it was also a big halloween for my great nephew, aaron. Oh, stop it here he is with my sister, his first halloween. I love him look at him with the ears. He is such a happy baby. By the way, there are tons of great friends in the marathon. People always hold up signs, yay, mom, go, you only have one mile left a lot of people do it for charity. By the way, i was watching the giants game. I cant believe i have any fingernails left. It was 4949. Everyone kept scoring. It was practice and everyone kept scoring. In the last second, the saints kicker kicked his longest field goal. The final score was 5249. Like giants fans were upset, but it was exciting. We are happy for kansas city. Oh, yeah. We of course would have loved our mets to win. But kansas city royals. They beat them after 12 innings. The final score 72. But royals, you have to be happy for the kansas city. Its the first time theyre champions in 30 years, hoda woman. It was great to see the fans. They were waiting for their guys to come out. They chanted that they loved them all the way out. It was beautiful. We were all touched this morning. I dont know if you had a chance to see brad pitt and Angelina Jolie interviewed by tom brokaw. They were really moving. We see pictures and video, but you rarely see that interaction. And they did talk about angelinas many surgeries. She went through a double mastectomy. And her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed, too. There was no vanity to my wifes approach. It was mature. It was an excitement to wear, this is our life. It. Its a strength in that. Its just another one of those things in life that makes you tighter. She was doing it for her kids and for her family. So we could be together. It was trumped everything. Trumped everything and anything. I think forasmuch as he speaks about my strength, i knew that he made it very, very clear to me that what he loved and what was a woman to him was somebody who was smart and capable and cared about her family. That it wasnt about, not about your physical body. That he was on my side and that this wasnt something where i was going to feel less of a woman because my husband wasnt going to let that happen. It it was beautiful. It was beautiful. I give that marriage all the hope in the world. Whod have thought it at the beginning, you know . There was no glamour to this whatsoever. We shot in real mines outside of bogota, columbia, salt mines. The absolute real deal. The benefit is that i was down there with antonio banderas, and he took his shirt off. [ laughter ] good laughs. Wonderful man. You had like a brotherhood, you bonded. 100 bonded. I think being in the mine led to the authenticity and veracity of what was on the screen. Its an international, stellar cast. But under those conditions, we really created this bond and chemistry that was very much like what the miners experienced, im sure. Where were you when this actually happened . I was in los angeles. I was working. I followed it, because it was part of the 24hour news cycle. It almost became like Reality Television because they got the cameras in the mine. And the logistics of getting them out was space age. Nasa got involved with the phoenix that you see there that brought them out one man at a time. Did it occur to you at any point that the same thing could happen to you and your fellow actors, because one of the mines was 500 years old . Years old e and i thought oh, my god, what an ironic headline that would be. But its the truth. We were down there the entire time, hard hats, except for the time when we were not wearing it. With mine safety people there. They were constantly checking the ceiling. So yes, that paranoia, that sense of peril was always there. Did you have any claustrophobe yeah being trapped down there . For me, no. But we filmed in the desert. I felt perfectly fine when we were in bogota. We got to chile, and i was like, oh, this happened a mile away. We only filmed the entrances. You talked about the brotherhood, you bonded. And there was some singing involved somehow. You created songs. Whats first thing we should do to get ready . You should plan ahead, have conversations with your loved are. If youre in a crisis, in a hospital is usually how that happens. Talk to the discharge planner. Youre going to have to do legwork. Before the person is out of the hospital. And contact the area agency on aging about communitybased care and go to the elder care locater and find your area agency on aging. You can also get a geriatric care coordinator. Through your insurance . Usually its not covered. But this is really helpful for longdistance caregivers. First you say you have to have a team. You cant go it alone. Exactly. I can do anything at this point, but i cant do everything. With other people, other family members, volunteers from a hospice or respite organization. You can also look at crystal care. My moms hairstylist came to the house sometimes to make it easier when i couldnt get her there. So many people want to be helpful . People are offering. You dont take them up on it. When people offer, say yes. So connect with other caregivers. Nobody quite understands it like somebody else whos going through the same thing. So we learn the most from each other. We get the most tips from each other. Go to a local support group. Again that area agency on aging can give you a list or the hospital can give you a list. If you cant go in person, get online. There are all kinds of support groups and community boards, aarp has a Community Online that you can post questions and get answers. We learn the most from each other. The trouble is, if youre a caregiver, you dont have much caring for to go to these things. You were talking about technology, maybe thats something you can do from home, these apps and things. Were juggling so much, in my lives, my parents lives. You can do it better if you organize. We have to be efficient. There are all kinds of apps now. I need a grocery i. Q. But aarp has a new care giving app specifically for this. You can even create a medication list by taking pictures of the medication bottles. Communicate, share calendars. That is really helpful to get it all together. One of the most important things is care for yourself. Because sometimes you cant give what you dont have. Thats the hardest part. Exactly. We dont expect our cars to run without gas on empty, but we expect ourselves to. That doesnt make sense. Its not selfish to take care of yourself. You have to take energy in.
